Main principles in organizing national training and using EHES

Main principles in
organizing national
training and using
EHES training
materials
2nd EHES training
seminar 20.9.2010
Päivikki Koponen
Organizing national
training
• Meeting minimum standards of EHES
• Covering all EHES core measurements
• Both theory and practical training
• All fieldwork staff members get full
training
• Even experienced nurses need training
• Do not underestimate the time needed
even for simple measurements
Organizing training
• Seminar for three full days – one full
week, or
• Weekly 3 hour training sessions
• Both options have benefits and
disadvantages
Training for general
issues
• Survey aims and purposes
• Target group and sampling
• Recruitment and obtaining informed
consents
• Data management and data security
• Working conditions
• Safety issues during fieldwork
• Importance of standardization and quality
assurance
Measurement specific
training
• Detailed presentation of EHES
standard procedures
• Use EHES training material or prepare
own material with own equipment
• Include pictures showing:
• Position of the subject
• Measurement process step by step
• Challenges in standardization (our bodies
are different!)
• Calibration of equipment
Measurement specific
training
• Practical training
•
•
•
•
Role playing
Practice with volunteers
Practice with different types of persons
Repeated measurements & measurements
carried out by different measurers
• compare results
• Using videos – seeing one’s own performance
may reveal important issues
EHES training materials
• PP-presentations on core measurements
• Use freely: adapt to local circumstances,
translate and/or use as an example to prepare
own material
• To be adapted, when needed, after this
seminar
• All feeback is appreciated
• Training videos
• not yet available – to be discussed, if we will
need these
• Manuals
EHES training materials
- visions for the future?
• E-learning platforms
• software-controlled learning
infrastructures
• Text, videos, pictures
• Communication, e.g. chat
• Practice of skills
• Asessment
• Feasibility for EHES?
• Interviewing skills lab settings
Experiences with
different types of
materials and methods
• Use of several types of materials and
methods
• Use good examples
• Be carefull to present correct
procedures and practice
• Do not underestimate the meaning of
little details
Your best practices?
• Sharing good experiences
• This seminar will help us to define
how to proceed to develop training
seminars and materials to support
future EHES and European
standardization
