Autumn Term
Newsletter 51
The term began welcoming Harry, Rachael,
George and Jay-Jay to Class 1 and Louise to
Class 2. They have all settled in really well to
life at St. Hedda’s. We also welcomed Mrs King
to Class 2 as our teacher for the autumn term.
R.E.
In our R.E. studies for the first part of the
Autumn term both classes have taken the
theme of Family. We thought of how life is a
gift from God and how each person is unique
and loved. This is best expressed by the love
and care within our families. Class 1 have made
a wall display of their families - Mums and
Dads would you recognise yourselves? Class 2
have studied Scripture and have discussed and
written about what is important to our human
family, our school family and our church family.
We attend weekly Mass on Fridays and earlier
this term we celebrated a Harvest Mass when
the children brought their harvest gifts - we
sang harvest hymns and read appropriate
readings and prayers. Thank you parents for
these gifts which were auctioned and the money
raised was sent to ‘The Sisters of Charity’ in
Ethiopia.
Topic
This term our whole school topic is ‘I live in the
UK’. In Class 2 we have been comparing and
grouping different kinds of rock and discovering
what they tell us about the Earth. We have
been learning about Britain’s’ settlement by
Anglo-Saxons and their invasions and kingdoms,
place names and village life. We are going to
explore
maps
and
compass
points
and
geographical features of the British landscape.
We will also be exploring trade links and our
part in the bigger world. In history we have
explored Sutton Hoo and are going to be
exploring Beowulf stories and Ofla. In Art we
have been focusing on drawing skills and we
continue to explore British Artists, especially
Turner.
Class 1 began their topic by locating the UK
and identifying the countries within it.
As
Queen Elizabeth celebrated being the longest
reigning monarch, we wrote portrait poems
about her and displayed them in our classroom!
We have learned about three British artists
and their work and recreated their drawings
using water soluble crayons, pencil crayons and
chalk. The Jolly Postman story book has been
a favourite of ours this term. He even wrote a
letter to us asking us to do his post round for
him! It was great fun and we wrote a letter
back to him to let him know how we got on.
During the last week we took part in an Autumn
Walk along the Toll Road looking for living
things in their habitats and seasonal changes as
part of the science topic.

Multiskills - Class One attended Multiskills at
Caedmon College, Scoresby Site. The children

Sports Leaders at the school, and all tried
their best at each and every activity. The
