A word from Pastor Amy….
From Past or S uzanne.. .
Unlikely Heroes
John MacArthur once wrote: “The pages of Scripture are filled with stories of great heroes—
men and women whom God used in unique and powerful ways to accomplish His purposes.
Their exploits vary greatly, yet the common thread that runs through all of their testimonies is
faith.” (John MacArthur, Twelve Unlikely Heroes)
This summer, First UMC of Springboro will be learning from a variety of heroes—biblical, fictional, and ordinary among us.
 Vacation Bible School is “Hero Central”,
 Creation Camp is “Hero Headquarters”,
 and our summer sermon series will be “Unlikely Heroes of the Bible”.
Most of our biblical heroes weren’t groomed for greatness. Many didn’t want to be chosen to
do the work of God in this world. They were ordinary men and ordinary women who simply
sought to be faithful to God and what they believed in. Yet because they were faithful, they
were also obedient—and thus changed the course of history.
Heroes are not perfect. They are just as prone as we are to make mistakes. And need grace. Yet
they can still teach us a thing or two about faith, and call us to faithful living.
So this summer in worship we will learn from the
stories of a prostitute, a cupbearer, an 8-year-old
king, a judge, a wife, and a youngest son. We will
also hear songs and stories from our youth and
children as they go away in mission and gather
for VBS. We will host IHN and continue in the
study of God’s Word on Sunday mornings. Even
in the summer months we continue to be the
church in the world…and maybe, just maybe, be
unlikely heroes to those around us.
Come, Holy Spirit, to lead us and guide us!
Pastor Amy

Lay Leader Report
The month of June signals many things in the
lives of God’s people in Springboro. For our
families with school-aged children, and for
the teachers and those others who work for a
school system, June indicates that the school
year has concluded. We celebrated Graduation Sunday on May 21 and we rejoice with
those students and proud families as graduation signals both an ending and a new beginning. For those who graduated college and

2016-2017 Attendance Awards
Congratulations to the following students
who achieved high attendance in Sunday
school for the 2016-2017 year. High attendance is achieved by missing less than six Sundays throughout the school year. This year
we included attendance for Wonderful
Wednesday as well. We applaud their desire
to learn more about Christianity. It is with
this knowledge that they can make and maintain their connection to Christ, as well as help
to educate others. Thanks also to their parents (or others) for their commitment to educate the children in Christianity. After all,
without parents, grandparents or friends, the
children would not have been here!

easy access to support and resources. Thanks
in part to Relay For Life supporters, the American Cancer Society is able to be there for millions of people touched by cancer each year.
Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for
the American Cancer Society.
It is a time to celebrate people who have
battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and
fight back against the disease. Once again
our church will be represented in this event.
This year, there is not going to be a Springboro event, so we are going to be involved in
the Warren County Relay on June 10 from

are welcome to walk as much or as little as
you like.
 Donate – Sponsor your favorite walker or
make a donation to the entire team.

track and are lit just after dark in a very
moving ceremony or remembering those

Pentecost is also known as the birthday of the
church and we are celebrating! On Sunday,
June 4 our youth groups will serve special
treats between services and collect cake mixes/icing, and small toys that will go to the local

Teachers Needed
Our children need leaders this summer to help
them in their Sunday
school connection. Our
regular leaders will take
a much deserved break
and we need some new
leaders to continue the
connection during the
summer months. If you
are interested in helping and making a positive difference in our children’s lives, please
contact Kim in the Education office (7482612). We will need help in our 2-3 year old
class, Kid Connection (4 yrs. through 4th grade)

...Lay Leader Report Continued
I rejoice that West Ohio Conference staff has
selected me to serve as Spiritual Director for
the next class of Certified Lay Ministry Academy. As such, I will serve with the newest
group of students who will be in a time of
discernment and study from September
through April. I recall with fondness my own
time in the academy and look forward to
working with the newest group. Many of
these people will be named Certified Lay
Ministers in June of 2018. I ask God to bless
my time with the academy students as we
make that journey together.
Summer preaching dates are beginning to be
booked. As a result, I will be absent from

talking about our amazing Savior, Jesus.

Holy Java
The Holy Java Sunday School class will begin
an eight week study of Follow by Andy Stanley on May 28 that will last until July. Religion says, “Change and you can join us.” Jesus says, “Join us and you will change.”
There’s a huge difference. Jesus doesn’t expect people to be perfect. He just wants
them to follow him. Being a sinner doesn’t
disqualify anyone. Being an unbeliever
doesn’t disqualify anyone. In fact, following
almost always begins with a sinner and unbeliever taking one small step. In this eightsession video-based Bible study, Holy Java
will take a journey through the Gospels as we
trace Jesus’ teaching on what it means to
follow.

Bright Beginnings Christian Preschool
In May, we finished up another wonderful
year with Bright Beginnings. It was a very
busy month with animal visits from Farmer
Georgia, Spring Sing concerts, and Mother’s
Day and Father’s Day gift preparation. “Let
the earth bring forth living creatures of all
kinds” was our Bible verse for the month.
Pastor Amy led Children’s Church again this
month, giving the children an exciting and
meaningful mini-worship experience full of
music, prayer and scripture. We capped off
the school year with graduation and promotion ceremonies and a carnival!
This school year, we had just over 300 children attend Bright Beginnings. We offered
20 different classes, serving kids from age 18
months through kindergarten. Our A.C.E.
before and after school program continued
to grow. We have also seen strong interest
in our summer Creation Camps. Most of our
classes for the 2017-2018 school year are
already full. We thank all the members of
our church for your continued support of this
wonderful outreach that is truly changing the
lives of children and families throughout our
community!

As we move into spring, it’s time to start planning for Vacation Bible School. It takes several
months of planning to pull off the wonderful program that helps bring God’s word to many
children both within our church and the greater Springboro community. Our evening session will be held the week of July 17-21 from 5:45—8:45 p.m. Our morning session will be
the following week, July 24-28 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteer sign-ups will be in
future bulletins and Decorating Days will begin soon.
Listed below are supplies that will be needed to make this two wonderful weeks. We will
begin taking your donations in early summer. As a part of the craft station, we will be completing service projects to donate to various groups in the local area. The donated items will
allow the campers to show their love for others through these service projects. Thank you
for your continued support of this great outreach program for children. If you have any
questions on these class supplies, please contact Sarah Wrazen ([email protected] or 703994-1788).

personal and financial hardships. Hundreds
of our neighbors in need from Franklin,

every week. In 2016 we distributed about
one million pounds of food to feed hungry
families. The Pantry is in need of more volunteers to keep this safety net in our community strong. We have volunteer opportunities each weekday morning and afternoon
and Wednesday evenings. To learn more or
