MEDIA RELEASE
PORT POWER PLAYERS INSPIRE MID MURRAY STUDENTS TO
THINK SMART AND LIVE HEALTHY
It’s all about football for Mid Murray Students this month, when Port Power roll out visits as part of the
Australia Post AFL Community Camp.
Through the support of local schools, Mid Murray Family Connections and Mid Murray Council’s OPAL and
Fun 4 YOUth programs, Port Power players will inspire students to think big at Truro, Swan Reach,
Blanchetown and Cadell on 13 February 2017.
Mid Murray Family Connections Coordinator Kiran King said the sessions will focus on the connection
between sport, school attendance, healthy lifestyle behaviours and healthy minds.
Ms King said the modelling of positive behaviour from elite athletes can send home powerful messaging
for young people and the collective partners were excited to deliver such a unique program in our region.
“With the State average for primary school attendance sitting at 92% and Mid Murray hovering at around
82%, it was time to take action on a range of initiatives to address this concern.”
“Often sporting clubs are the local hub in rural and remote communities and this program highlights the
link between Australian Football and the wellbeing of local communities.”
“We are aiming to inspire the kids to dream big, think big and act big. With the alarming state-wide
statistics of health related issues in children, both physical and emotionally, we hope to send home a
strong message around the need get at least 30 minutes of intensive exercise a day, drink plenty of water
and choose healthy foods.”
This initiative is one of many from the Mid Murray Family Connections (MMFC) Network, a collaboration
of non-government and government agencies and passionate community members who are working
together towards improving the wellbeing of the children in our region.
