Deliverable D9.2 – Set-up of Project Website
1. INTRODUCTION
The aim of deliverable D9.2 is the presentation of the key features of the VOLATILE project website
which will ensure the internet presence during the development of the project platform and beyond for
the general public. It addresses the overall structure as well as content.
The VOLATILE project website is an important and versatile dissemination tool which will complement all
other awareness tools and actions. It will inform the community about the ongoing VOLATILE project,
about open access publications VOLATILE has created and will ensure the gateway to a more
developed Platform for registered members who will have access to much more detailed information,
webinars, e-library etc.

2. VOLATILE WEB-ADDRESS
The acronym of the project with grant agreement number 720777 is VOLATILE as a representative Word
from the Project title:
“Volatile - Biowaste derived volatile fatty acid platform for biopolymers, bioactive compounds and
chemical building blocks”
In order to have a high recognition value of the project, the partners decided to use the acronym as
name for the address. Additionaly, as the project was funded under Horizon2020 the consortium decided
to add this detail in the domain (-h2020) name. As a European funded project it was concluded to use
.eu as top-level domain rather than country specific top-level domains.
Therefore the Fully Qualified Domain Name of the project is:
www.volatile-h2020.eu
3. EUROPEAN COMMISSION FUNDING
In order to facilitate identification by the public and the European Commission, all projects funded under
Horizon 2020 have to comply with certain rules, mentioned in the Grant Agreement, regarding action
promotion and also visibility of EU Funding.

4. WEBSITE STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS
The upper task menu consists of seven menu categories, Home, The Project, Partners, Questionaire,
Links, Platform and Contact.
The lower task menu provides quick access to Social Media channels, the project Factsheet, access to
the project newsletters and the disclaimer.
By a click to the LinkedIn icon the website guest is
redirected to the project active LinkedIn Group where weekly
various posts are available.
The VOLATILE at a glance TAB offers a quick view to the
project factsheet.
5
Deliverable D9.2 – Set-up of Project Website
From month 6 onwards a biannual newsletter will keep stakeholders informed about project progress,
news on events where VOLATILE partners will present results and achievments. A link to the enewsletter will available in the News/Newsletter TAB.
Legal notice information is available through a click to the Disclaimer TAB.
4.1 Homepage
Volatile - Biowaste derived volatile fatty acid platform for biopolymers, bioactive compounds and
chemical building blocks is a project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020
program (Call H2020-NMBP-BIO-2016 Grant agreement No. 720777).
The project, started in December 2016, aims in the development of an innovative Volatile Fatty Acids
Platform for the bioconversion of municipal solid bio-waste fraction and sludgy biowaste from other
industries. The platform will be integrated in anaerobic digestion. The volatile fatty acids will be
recovered continuously using sophisticated membrane technology and will be provided as feedstock /
carbon source for value added fermentation appraches such as biopolymer PHA to be tested in material
applications, single cell oil as precursor for oleochemical industry as well as long chain unsaturated
health-promoting Omega-3 fatty acids to be used as food ingredient or nutraceutical. PHA will be
obtained by bacterial fermentations, single cell oil from yeast cultivation and Omega-3 fatty acids via
heterotrophic microalgae. The process development will be accompanied with sophisticated LCA study
in order to ensure environmental friendly process design.
The project will also work on solutions to typical barriers beside others such as quality requirements,
continuous and sufficient feedstock supply or interaction between members of value chain using agentbased modelling. Also the effect of legal stimuli and restrictions and subsidies and taxes will be studied
and a link between product requirements and markets will be established. VOLATILE will prepare a
Roadmap indicating future research needs but also giving suggestion for legislative improvements. A
CEN workshop will be initiated to discuss with external stakeholders rules for the VFAP & to set up
standard requirements in the form of a CEN workshop Agreement.

4.2 The Project
VOLATILE is in line with the circular economy strategy to “reuse and recycle” by reusing the
heterogeneous biowaste fraction of municipal waste & sludgy biowaste from food industry and waste
water treatment plants and converting these fractions into carbon sources for value-added fermentation
strategies such as biopolymers (PHA) for materials application, single cell oil (SCO) for oleochemical
industry or long chain omega-3 fatty acids as precursor for bioactive omega-3 derived eicosanoids.
The project will develop an innovative Volatile Fatty Acid Platform (VFAP) based on anaerobic
digestion capable to be integrated into existing anaerobic digestion plants.
The obtained volatile fatty acids (VFA) will be used as carbon source for the fermentative production of
biopolymer PHA to be tested in materials application, single cell oil obtained from yeasts as
chemical building block for oleochemical industry as well as long chain high unsaturated omega-3
fatty acids as bioactive compound provided to food and nutraceutical industry obtained from
heterotrophic microalgae.
The project will implement sustainable down-stream steps for the recovery and purification of VFA as
carbon source, PHAs, single cell oil as well as Omega-3 fatty acids keeping in mind economic feasibility.

Finally, depending on waste streams business cases will be developed and the VOLATILE processes
implemented in existing value chains, optimizing the total economic performance of the value chain by
using agent based modelling. The project will rely on collaboration with relevant stakeholders in
Municipal Solid Biowaste collection & treatment, Waste Water Treatment and food waste producer,
technology providers, end-users as well as research institutions.

4.3 Partners
An inter-disciplinary consortium has been built to successfully implement the Volatile strategy with a wellbalanced and equal partnership between the 15 SME/IND and 6 RTD partners with expertise in
complementary fields.
Scientific expertise in microbiology, chemistry, engineering, economy, law and sustainability is covered.
Technological expertise in biogas, composting, fermentation/bioprocessing and downstream processing
is also covered. The partners will pool together knowledge in aerobic and anaerobic fermentation
strategies, microbiology, environmental and economic impact assessment, as well as waste
management and logistics. Outreach, information spread and support to the multi-actor approach will be
ensured by an SME with a dedicated department for dissemination and communication.
For each project partner, click on the name will reveal underneath a separate tab with the contact details
of the institution and responsable person for the day-to-day activities.

4.4 Questionaire
Starting month 4 of the Project, a Questionnaire will be prepared to assess the stakeholder/public
acceptance and to determine where opportunities to implement a VFA Platform lie and what are the
expected bottlenecks. The first version of the questionnaire will only be available in english, after that
several other languages will be available to ease outreach and engagement for national agencies.
4.5 Links
Apart from relevant links with reference to Horizon 2020, EU Login and European Central Bank useful for
Project reporting, on this tab Open Access publications of VOLATILE will be available for preview.

4.6 Platfom
Beside general communication available through the Project website, upon registration Access will be
provided to the VOLATILE stakeholder platform, a more advanced tool to facilitate communication and
dissemination of project results.
A permanent communication mechanism will be supported through the VOLATILE collaborative
platform, a digital platform that will facilitate several activities:
 A communication tool for the promotion and awareness regarding the project results;
 Host for various interactive and sustainable tools to foster diffusion of information, interaction,
interface for events etc.
 Act as an e-library for developed scientific papers, research summary sheets, project relevant
reports, training module etc.
Access to the platform will be ensured therough the general Project website starting month 4.
