Some Gaelic Football Rules

GROUP 3
Gaelic Football
Gaelic Football was created in 1887. It is a game that is
exclusively played in Ireland!!!
Aim Of The Game
The aim of the game is to score points by passing the ball through the other team’s goals (3 points) or a set
of two posts separated by a crossbar 2.5 metres above the ground (1 point). The winning team will be the team
with the highest number of points at the end of the game.
Field, Players and Equipment
Gaelic Football fields are rectangular with dimensions ranging from 130 to 145
metres in length, and 80 to 90 metres in width.
There are H-shaped goalposts at each end of the field, formed by two posts, which
are usually 6–7 metres high, set 6.5 m apart, and connected 2.5 m above the ground by a
crossbar. A net extending behind the goal is attached to the crossbar and lower goal posts.
A match lasts for 70 minutes (two halves of 35 minutes).
The game is played with a round leather football similar in appearance to a
traditional volleyball (but larger).
Each team consists of 15 players all assigned to different positions. These players
are allowed to move freely on the field.
There are eight officials who supervise a football match.
Scoring
If the ball goes over the crossbar, a point is scored. A point is scored by either kicking the ball over the
crossbar, or fisting it over, in which case the hand must be closed while striking the ball. If the ball goes below the
crossbar, a goal, worth three points, is scored. A goal is scored by kicking the ball into the net, not by fist passing
the ball into it.
Scores are recorded in the format Goal Total-Point Total. To determine the score-line goals must be
converted to points and added to the other points. For example, in a match with a final score of Team A 0–21
Team B 4–8, Team A is the winner with 21 points, as Team B scored only 20 points (4 times 3, plus 8).
Some Gaelic Football Rules





In Gaelic football, players are allowed to carry the ball in their hands and it can be kicked or hand-passed.
After every four steps the player must bounce or solo the ball. A solo involves dropping the ball onto your
boot and kicking it back into your hand.
The ball cannot be lifted straight off the ground - a player must put his boot under it.
Shoulder-to-shoulder contact is permitted, while a player can slap the ball out of an opponent's hand.
Deliberate body contact such as punching, tripping, jersey pulling or a full frontal charge is forbidden, as is
blocking an opponent's shot with the foot.
Yellow and red cards are issued in both codes but there is also a black card in football, which is issued for
cynical behaviour fouls such as deliberately pulling down an opponent. The offending player is ordered off
but can be replaced, provided the team hasn't already used their full quota of six substitutions.
