TENNIS PROCEDURES
TRYOUTS
1. We will be carrying a roster of no more than 12 players on the 2017 Varsity Girls
Tennis Team.
2. No athlete may participate in any way (conditioning, try-outs or team) without
fully complete VHSL Participation forms. Physicals must be signed and dated
AFTER JUNE 1st 2016. Emergency cards must be received by the Coach by the
first day of conditioning and/or try-outs or the athlete cannot participate.
3. Academic requirements needed for participating – A student’s eligibility: enrolled
and passing five subjects the pervious semester and continuously enrolled in five
subjects.
The consequences for poor grades:
 Poor grades (grade of D or lower in a content class; F or lower in
an elective class): no match play until new report shows
improvement to a passing grade.
 Behavior / attitude issues (any mark of 2 or 3 in behavior): no
match play until there is a marked and sustained improvement.
4. Tryouts will be the week of February 20, 2017 from 3:00-4:30PM (Monday from
11:30AM – 2:00PM)
5. During Tryouts, the girls will go through a series of drills and play matches to
assess their athletic ability, technique, work ethic, and attitude.
6. At the end of the final tryout day, each player will meet with the coach, who will
let her know if she is on the team. If the player doesn’t make the team, the
coach will let the player know where she needs to develop to improve her game
to tryout the following year.
7. Equipment – All players are required to have a tennis racket, water bottle,
proper tennis shoes and court attire. (Court attire consists of athletic or exercise
clothes, including pants/shorts/skirts that can hold at least 1 ball in a pocket or
spandex.) The weather is going to be cool during try-outs, so please dress
appropriately for the weather.
PRACTICE
1.
2.
All practices will be at Brooke Point High School starting at 3:00PM and
approx. end at 4:30PM unless otherwise scheduled. Parents, please be on
time to pick up your player from the tennis courts. Practices will be held
Monday through Friday unless there is a holiday, scheduled day off, or
players are otherwise informed. Players must be on time! If a player is
late three or more times (unexcused) she may be released from the team.
Practice times may change based on weather. Additionally, rained out
matches will be rescheduled on practice days. Team members are

expected to be available all week days until 7PM in case of
practice/match changes.
Practice will start with the following as led by the coach:
A. Run at least 2 laps around the courts.
B. Dynamic stretching
C. 12-15 minutes warm-up
On court practice will consist of drills, playing, and challenge matches. Once
a drill starts, it should continue until a change is signaled from the
coach
Weekends – Please play as much as possible. The coach may be available for
additional instruction if scheduled ahead of time.
Conduct:
A. At practices players must work hard on their game and try to improve.
Work on the drills provided and change from drill to actual play only when
told to do so by the coach. Sloppy practice breeds sloppy play!
B. Players must use energy and efforts to improve your game – not to
complain, make excuses, or clown around. Attitude matters.
C. Drills are provided with a purpose. Players should ask if they do not
understand a drill.
There will be some days when it rains and no practices can be held outside.
When this happens, the coach will decide whether an indoor practice is
beneficial. The school will make an announcement regarding practice in the
afternoon and the coach will post the information on the school website and
contact the parents when time allows.
Players should bring all personal items from school with them to practice.
Return into school after practice will not be permitted. If a player goes home
between school and practice or a match, it is not an excuse to be late!
ABSENCES/TARDIES
All players are expected to attend all practices and matches. We have very little
time to practice, and drills/games/challenge matches are planned with specific
players for each practice. When a player misses practice it affects everyone on the
team.
Excused absences are the following: illness, a doctor’s appointment, or a preapproved school event that was scheduled at the same time. The coach must
approve all other absences; approval should be made more than 24 hours in
advance. Players may be asked to complete additional practice and/or conditioning
to make up for tardies or absences. Unexcused absences before a match will remove
a player from the lineup for that day. Leaving a match early without prior approval
from coach is considered an unexcused absence. Three excused absences or tardies
throughout the season could result in removal from the team or keep a player from
lettering. Please notify the coach as much in advance as possible for any absences.
Please call and leave a message and email the coach if possible. Any player who
3
is absent during the last week of the season could be asked to not attend
the end of season banquet.
MUTUAL RESPECT:
Treating one’s teammates, opponents, facilities, and coach with respect and common
courtesy is a fundamental requirement for team membership.
Athletes are to enjoy being a part of a team and also support one another! We
practice, struggle, compete, win, and lose as one team. The requirement for mutual
respect among athletes and coaches is broad enough to cover any foreseeable incident
which may require disciplinary action. Violations will be dealt with on an individual
basis.
MATCH PROCEDURES
1.
The Coach will announce the line-up and start/show times before matches.
The coach reserves the right to change the line-up at any time.
2.
Players must attend all classes on the day of a match to be eligible to
participate on that day.
3.
Players will begin warming up for all matches as a team by completing a short
warm up jog and dynamic stretch routine together. After that the teams will
announce who is playing and what position and you will meet your opponent.
You will have a 5 minute warm-up with your opponent. After that, you have to
choose a side and who will serve first – this is done by the home team player
spinning the racket.
4.
The receiver will call the serve and all shots on his own side.
5.
In doubles the receiver’s partner can make calls regarding serves. When
receiving serves in a game, the receivers partner should stand behind the
service line in order to better call the ball.
6.
Do not serve until the receiver is ready. No more practice serves should be
taken by either player after the first point of the match.
7.
Let all balls you think that are out hit the ground before calling. Stopping the
ball in mid air will result in an automatic loss of the point.
8.
If there is any question or doubt about a ball being in or out, offer to do the
point over (although a definite call is best). If a disagreement should occur, go
back to the last point on which you can both agree. If no settlement is still is
found, call a Coach. However, if you are not sure a ball is out, it should be
assumed that it was in.
9.
Each regular season match will be a ten game set, win by two, unless
otherwise notified. A tiebreaker will be used at 10-all.
10. At the end of the match, GARNET VALLEY PLAYERS are always the first ones at
the net to shake their opponent’s hands. Doubles players always shake their

partner’s hand on the way to the net and before their opponents. Good
sportsmanship is essential.
Loudness, throwing rackets, hitting the ball into the fence, and profanity will
not be tolerated. Player conduct on the court reflects upon the school as well
as yourself.
This is a team sport. Every match counts.
If you have any questions or need assistance during your match, a Coach can
be called over after the 3rd game has been completed. Coaching is allowed at
this time. Injury timeouts can be called at any time when necessary.
Upon finishing a match, shake hands with your opponent(s) and report the
score to the BPHS Coach or designated team manager (no matter who won). If
we are the home team, return the balls to the BPHS Coach. All players will
be expected to stay for the entire match whether they have played or
not to cheer on those still on the court.
During matches, only the Coach can speak and provide direct
instruction to the players. Please keep communications with the athletes
to encouragement.
The coach reserves the right to change the line-up before a match and after
Singles matches have been completed for any reason (per VHSL policy). Every
match counts and effort is rewarded.
Matches are team events. Players who are not involved in a match are
expected to pay attention to and cheer on teammates playing. Cell phones
should not be visible during matches unless there is an extenuating
circumstance as approved by the coach. Players should not be socializing or
sitting with anyone besides other teammates.
BUS POLICY
All players must travel to away matches on the bus with the team. Players may leave
after the full match has been completed with a parent/guardian, but the
parent/guardian must sign out with the coach. Only a player’s own parent/guardian
may take a player home from a match. This is a county policy.
CHALLENGES
1. A player may challenge up to 3 players above her on the ladder until she is in
the top 8. Then she may challenge up only 1 at a time.
2. If a player challenges and wins decidedly, her name will be moved into the
position of her opponent and everyone in between will slide down one position.
3. All challenge requests must be made to the Coach prior to a practice. All
challenge matches scheduled at the discretion of the coach.
4. Challenge matches are not the only factor that is considered in deciding the
team line-up. Although a player may win a challenge, it does mean she will
automatically play in that spot in the upcoming match. The Coach reserves the
5
right to re-arrange the ladder at any time, regardless of challenges, whenever
she deems it necessary for the good of the team. For example: the challenge
player that won may be a stronger doubles player.
Note: While challenge matches are an important part of growing through out the
season, the coach does not feel that they should be a primary concern with a “team
tennis” situation. The players should concentrate on and exert efforts towards
bettering their game (in both singles and doubles) in order to beat other teams – not
focusing on beating each other. The team should work together. Our players should
be saying “nice shot”, helping each other, rooting for each other at matches whether
you have won or not, etc. This is a team sport! Attitude/behavior issues during
challenge matches are unacceptable could result in an immediate cancellation of current
and future challenge matches.
UNIFORM
BPHS will provide all players with a game t-shirt. In addition, players will provide their
own tennis shoes, skirt, and cold weather gear. All players must provide their own
black tennis skirt. If a player purchases a skirt other than the option provided by the
coach, that skirt must be approved. Players will have the opportunity to purchase
additional uniform pieces at the beginning of the season. Cold weather gear should be
Brooke Point colors (red, black, white). Players may play in long-sleeves (black, white,
red), but must wear the BPHS issued t-shirt on top. Ball caps and visors may be worn
but they must be red, black, or white and must be conservatively marked (no large
logos!). Players should remove all jewelry before practice and matches.
LETTERING
1.
To letter for Varsity Tennis, a player must do the following:
A. Play in 1 Varsity match (singles and/or doubles).
B. Attend all practices and matches (unless excused)
COMMUNICATION WITH COACH / PARENTS
If parents have a question or concern with their daughter or the coaching during a
match or practice, please wait 24 hours before contacting the coach. The coach is
always willing to discuss a parent’s concern with his/her child and/or the coach’s
coaching philosophy. Discussions about other players will not be tolerated. In the event
that a parent needs to meet with the coach, please schedule a time by calling or
emailing the coach.
The coach will e-mail, send a remind text, and post on the school’s website updated
information on the team whenever possible.
