INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE LIFTMASTER
BG 3000-B1 AND -X1 POWER FAIL OPERATION OPTION
Use this instruction sheet to install the Power Fail Operation Option in existing LiftMaster Gate Operators.
Please read and follow these instructions carefully to perform a proper installation.
A. CHECK KIT CONTENTS FOR COMPLETENESS
The Power Fail Operation Option installation kit consists of the following items:
• DC motor assembly (includes DC motor, support bracket and 2 1/2" pulley)
• 12V battery
• V belt (41" for gate w/o control box hinge; 36” for newer gate with control box hinge)
• Battery support bracket assembly (includes bracket, PCB assembly and cable harness)
• Mounting hardware:
Battery: 1/4" bolt, flat washer, and kepnut (2 each)
Motor: 1/4" bolt, split lock washer and hex nut (4 each); flat washer (8 each)
Please contact LiftMaster Customer Service if any damaged or missing parts are discovered.
B. POWER FAIL OPERATION OPTION INSTALLATION (Refer to Figure 1 at the bottom of this page.)
1. Remove the gate operator front cover to access the gate operator mechanism.
2. IMPORTANT: Turn off gate operator power switch.
3. Remove the Lexan cover from the Control Box to access the gate operator board.
4. Place DC motor assembly on tray. Secure from top using four bolts and flat washers; secure from
bottom using four flat washers, split lock washers and hex nuts. Finger tighten only.
5. Place battery on tray with battery terminals nearest to the right side of the tray, as shown below.
6. Place the bracket over battery, aligning its holes with mounting holes on tray. Secure from top
using two bolts and flat washers; secure from bottom using kepnuts.
7. Connect the black wire (Motor -) to “Black” terminal (J5), and red wire (Motor +) to “Red” terminal
(J4), both located on the PCB assembly (see Figure 2).
8. Run the battery support bracket wire harness toward the right front of the tray. Route cable under
the cable clamps, through the bushing into the lower right side of the Control Box. Plug the
connector into the “Battery I/O” connector at the bottom of the control board.
9. Remove the existing V belt and place new V belt over the three pulleys.

10. Push DC motor to the left until sufficient belt tension has been achieved, then tighten nuts.
NOTE: Less than 20 lbs tension may cause belt slippage, and more than 28 lbs tension may
impede motor operation.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Perform the next step (battery hookup) with care. Interchanging battery wires will severely
damage the gate operator board.
11. Remove the tape from the battery terminals. Connect the black wire from the PCB assembly to the
negative battery terminal and the red wire to the positive battery terminal.
C POWER FAIL OPERATION TEST

NOTES:
The following procedures require turning power to the gate operator off and on at its
dedicated circuit breaker. DO NOT shut off the Gate Operator Power switch, since this
will shut off everything, including the Power Fail Operation option.
Because the battery will not be fully charged at the time of the test, we strongly suggest
moving the gate only one foot when performing the power fail test.
In the following procedure, the BG 3000-X1 will be referred to as the "X1", and the BG 3000B1 will be referred to as the "B1".
1. A) On the X1: set Power Fail switch S2 (located right of keypad) to same position as S1.
B) On the B1: set Power Fail Switch S3 (located on middle of board) to same position as S2.
2. Turn on gate operator power switch.
3. Using the manual inputs, initiate gate opening, then stop the gate about one foot short of its fully
open position.
4. Shut off power to the gate operator. After one minute gate should fully open and stop at its limit.
5. Turn on power to the gate operator.
6. Set Power Fail switch (S2 on the X1, S3 on the B1) to the opposite position.
7. Using the manual inputs, initiate gate closing, then stop the gate about one foot short of its fully
closed position.
8. Shut off power to the gate operator. After one minute gate should fully close and stop at its limit.
9. Turn on power to the gate operator.
10. Set Power Fail switch (S2 on the X1, S3 on the B1) to the direction you want the gate to move after
a power outage.
11. Reinstall the Lexan cover on the Control Box, then reinstall the gate operator cover.
