Literacy There are two aspects to the literacy curriculum area – ‘reading’ and ‘writing’. Some of the areas we will be focusing on this term include: Continue a rhyming string. Hears and says the initial sound in words. Uses vocabulary and forms of speech that are increasingly influenced by their experiences of books. Begins to break the flow of speech into words. Write our name independently. Begin to write simple words to make labels and captions etc. ‘Celebrations!’ – During this topic, we will be learning about the different celebrations and festivals which are celebrated during this time by our own and others’ cultures. We will be learning about the Hindu festival Diwali, Guy Fawkes Night, birthdays and, of course, Christmas! The children will also learn about the important values surrounding these celebrations, including kindness, being thankful and the importance of friendship and family. Mathematics There are two aspects to the mathematics curriculum area – ‘number’ and ‘space, shape and measure’. Some of the areas we will focus on this term include: Solving problems through doubling, halving and sharing – within a practical context. Making quantities through repeated addition. In a money context counting in 1ps, 2ps, 5ps and 10ps. Counting forwards and backwards and recognising and ordering numbers 1-20. Identifying and describing the properties of 3D shapes. Understanding symmetry and making our own symmetrical patterns. Communication and Language Communication and listening is embedded within your child’s everyday learning. Some of the areas we will focus on this term will include: Is able to follow directions (if not intently focused on own choice of activity). Responds to instructions involving a two-part sequence. Listens and responds to ideas expressed by others in conversation or discussion. Uses language to imagine and recreate roles and experiences in play situations. Uses talk to organise, sequence and clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events. ‘Celebrations!’ Acorn Class Term 2 Physical Development Physical development involves the development of fine (small) and gross (large) motor skills, co-ordination and balance., as well as learning about health and self-care. Some of the areas we will focus on this term include: Experiments with different ways of moving. Travels with confidence and skill around, under, over and through balancing and climbing equipment. Shows increasing control over an object in pushing, patting, throwing, catching or kicking it. Handles tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely and with increasing control. Shows a preference for a dominant hand. Eats a healthy range of foodstuffs and understands need for variety in food. Personal, Social and Emotional Development Initiates conversations, attends to and takes account of what others say. Explains own knowledge and understanding, and asks appropriate questions of others. Takes steps to resolve conflicts with other children, e.g. finding a compromise. Expressive Arts and Design Expressive arts and design focuses on the development of your child’s exploration and use of materials and media, as well as their imagination. Some of the areas we will focus on this term include: Begins to build a repertoire of songs and dances. Explores what happens when they mix colours. Understands that different media can be combined to create new effects. Constructs with a purpose in mind, using a variety of resources. Uses simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately. Selects appropriate resources and adapts work where necessary. Selects tools and techniques needed to shape, assemble and join materials they are using. Understanding the World Enjoys joining in with family customs and routines. Explore the changes around us during the season of Autumn. Understand why some animals hibernate during the colder months.
