International Rugby
• During 1905, the New Zealand Rugby team
toured the Home Nations of the United Kingdom,
the first team from a colony to do so
• Just before the kick-off of each game the New
Zealand Rugby Team performed a strange
dance ritual
• The ritual was an ancient ‘Maori’ war dance
• The Maoris are the indigenous people of New
Zealand
• It has become tradition for New Zealand to
perform this ritual before every international
game they play
• It is now commonly known as The Haka
Gloucester v. New Zealand
• At Kingsholm
• 1st live experience of the ‘Haka’ for the people of
Gloucester
• Most players in the New Zealand team were
Maoris
• The Maoris liked to have tattoos on their faces
• Imagine facing these men doing the Haka,
shouting at you, dancing in front of you, and with
tattoos on their faces!
These are screen
shots from the
Heritage Website.
Your Challenge
• On each of the 3 blank facial templates,
draw a particular Haka facial expression
and create and draw a tattoo design which
emphasises that expression.
• Remember that the Haka is actually a war
cry!
