Depending upon which kit you ordered, you will be provided either an ISA Ethernet card or a PCI Ethernet card. These cards are wired differently and must be plugged into either an ISA or a PCI slot on your motherboard. • • • After you determine what type of card you have, you can install it. PCI slots contain many more pins than ISA slots. PCI slots are set further from the rear of the computer than ISA slots. PCI slots have a “key” to prevent ISA cards from being accidentally inserted. PCI ISA Hub (Only with Ethernet Connect Kits for software distributed by Melco) 1 2 • Insert your Microsoft Windows 95/98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. ® ® Once the CD has been inserted, shut down Windows and turn the power off. Remove the computer case; if you purchased your computer from Melco, remove the 4 screws shown at right. Once the screws are removed, the case will slide back and off. If you did not purchase your computer from Melco, refer to the documentation that shipped with your computer to remove the case. Set the screws and the case aside. Documentation 4 5 6 Install the Ethernet card in the slot (be sure it is inserted all the way into the slot). Make a note of which slot you have selected. Grounding Screw Cover Plate Use the Grounding Screw to secure the card, then replace the computer cover. Connect one end of the cable to the port on the Ethernet card (in the computer). Note: If you plug the cable into the modem port accidentally. the Ethernet network will not function until you plug it into the proper port. Connect the other end of the cable to port #1 on the hub. Using the cable that was provided with your peripheral, connect the peripheral to the hub (you can use any other port on the hub EXCEPT the daisy chain port). Applies ONLY if installing a Hub Connect the power cable (provided with the hub) to a power source. Plug the power cable into the hub. After the power has been connected to the hub, turn on your computer, and turn this sheet over to continue installation. Note: This side to be completed first. B • Remove the Grounding Screw for the slot where you will install the Ethernet card, then remove the Cover Plate. of Ethernet software installation Melco’s Ethernet network supports Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows 98. After you have installed the hardware portion of your kit (refer to the other side of this sheet), you must install the drivers for it. 1 Turn the power ON to your computer. Windows 95/98 will detect the network card, and since you have already inserted the Windows 95/98 CD (from the Hardware Installation side of this sheet), it will notify you that it is about to install the necessary software. 8 When Windows 95/98 prompts you to restart the computer, answer Yes. As Windows restarts, the Microsoft Networking dialog box will appear. This dialog box prompts you to enter a user name and password. Click on the Cancel button, as no information should be entered at this time. When Windows 95/98 has finished opening, you must change the network properties; click on ®Settings® ®Control Panel to display the Start® control panel. Double-click on the Network icon. 10 A Saurer Group Company Next, highlight the IPX/SPX compatible Protocol by clicking on it one time with the left mouse button. Then, click on the Properties button. Select the Advanced tab (along the top of the dialog box). 9 If you are not asked for Computer or Workgroup names, it is simply because you have a newer revision of Windows 95/98. 4 5 If a dialog box appears asking for Computer and Workgroup names, Click OK. You may enter whatever you wish in these fields; you must enter a name in both the Computer and Workgroup names, but you may leave the description field blank. After you have entered the information, click Close. Embroidery Systems When the Network dialog box appears, click on the down arrow under Primary Network Logon. Select Windows Logon. 7 Immediately after Windows 95/98 begins to open, insert the SMC driver disk (with the Melco label) that came with the Melco Ethernet kit and follow the on-screen instructions. 2 3 6 Melco Under Property, highlight “Frame Type.” Under Value, select “Ethernet 802.3.” Click OK. The Network dialog box will reappear; click OK. Windows 95/98 will ask you if you want to restart in order for your changes to take effect; click Yes. 11 When Windows restarts, it will ask you to enter a user name and password. Enter your name but leave the password blank. Click OK when you have entered the information. Note: If you enter a password here, be sure to write it down; Windows 95/98 will ask you for this password every time you start the computer. Your new Ethernet card is now properly configured and ready for use! Note: This side to be completed last. Turn the page over to begin installation. 10147 Rev. B Part
