PPTC17 Team Captain Guide Final

2017 TEAM CAPTAIN GUIDE
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome Team Captain!
Thank you for your commitment to becoming a 2016 Padres Pedal the Cause team
captain! This is an exciting year to be a part of this amazing experience on the road to
conquering cancer. Whether this is the first year that your team will be participating or
you are Padres Pedal veterans, we want to give you all the tools possible to be
successful and enjoy Padres Pedal weekend!
New in 2017: it’s is a new year with opportunities to introduce fun and exciting new
options to Padres Pedal! Ride your bike over Coronado on one of our new Saturday
courses. Mix and match your experience by creating your own two-day options during
registration on our brand new website. Join our training rides or step up your game and
join our new Ride Leader Program. With options for everyone to participate, Padres Pedal
2017 will be unlike any other event.
Padres Pedal the Cause is not just a first-class cycling event, it is a one of a kind
experience that brings the community together in unprecedented ways to rally as one
force against cancer. Padres Pedal is the driving force behind funding innovative and
translational cancer research projects that would otherwise likely miss funding from NIH
and other government organizations. All proceeds from Padres Pedal benefit our worldclass beneficiaries: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health System, The Salk
Institute, Sanford-Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and Rady Children’s
Hospital-San Diego. The vision is one day to live in a world without cancer.
This handbook is designed to help guide you through the process of creating a team and
executing all the way through event weekend. This aims to aid you in understanding the
event, developing a plan, recruiting a team, and finally being able to communicate
information to your team members. Along with this handbook there will be a team captain
meeting held once a month to touch base and get some new inspiration from fellow
captains.
Thank you for your dedication to PEDAL and we can’t wait to see you at team events!
Sincerely,
Anne Marchand
Executive Director

YOUR ROLE AS CAPTAIN
UNDERSTAND WHAT
WE DO.
This handbook aims to educate
you, the captain, on the main
aspects of Padres Pedal the
Cause as an organization and
importance of our mission.
Further, it will demonstrate
where the organization has
come from and where it is
headed. It will help you to fully
comprehend the magnitude of
the vision, a world without
cancer, to be able to encourage
and inspire other riders to join in
the fight with us.
SUPPORT YOUR
TEAM.
This handbook will also aid you
in the process of recruitment
and fundraising. It will show you
the logistics of registering, the
many different ways that people
can get involved, and provide
you a basic outline of a plan for
you to develop based on your
own team goals. As captain your
role is to be fully learned and be
able to relay that information to
your team effectively. This will
provide you with information
about preparing for the event,
and the tools you need to be
successful at leading your team
to greatness.
BE A PADRES PEDAL
AMBASSADOR.
Most importantly, your role is to
be a Padres Pedal champion
and to help others along their
path to participation. This means
not only being able to
communicate the basic facts of
Padres Pedal such as the
mission and the logistics, but
expressing what it means to
participate in Padres Pedal and
why it is special to you. The
cause means something
different for everyone but being
able to come together to fight
cancer is what it’s all about.
3
WHAT IS PADRES PEDAL THE CAUSE?

to bringing an end to cancer by funding lifesaving,
collaborative research in San Diego. We do so through
our annual cycling challenge which raises funds to
support scientific discovery.

PADRES PEDAL RESOURCES
NEWSLETTER: Padres Pedal publishes a newsletter each month to all registered participants or individuals who have requested
information about Padres Pedal. These email newsletters will give updates on upcoming events, information about cycling, and updates on
our progress in cancer research. This serves as an additional tool to take some of the pressure off of the team captain as they are not the
only form of communication that riders receive.
TEAM CAPTAIN MEETINGS: Along with the optional initial team captain onboarding session with a Padres Pedal staff member, there will
be monthly team captains meetings in which the leaders of every team will be invited to a casual get together to meet one another, gain
valuable insight into event logistics, and gain new perspectives on team building.
PEDAL PARTNERS: Pedal Partners are local businesses that offer registered riders either a discount on items or a percentage of a
purchase donated to their fundraising page. A full list of Pedal Partners can be found on the website Pedal Partners page.
THIRD PARTY FUNDRAISERS: Padres Pedal works with local businesses to host fundraising nights in which a portion of the proceeds are
donated to the Padres Pedal the Cause general fund. Updates on these events will be featured in the newsletters and on the Calendar of
Events page of our website Everyone is welcome to join; the more the merrier!
TRAINING RIDES: Many riders will need to train in order to ride the distance for which they have registered. Padres Pedal hosts multiple
training rides and partners with established groups to offer many different levels of training rides throughout the year. A calendar of training
rides with full details can also be found on the website on our Calendar of Events Page.
PADRES PEDAL STAFF: The Padres Pedal staff is always here to help and answer any questions you may have. Please don’t hesitate to
