Welcome to Second Grade!
Reading Time in School
• We read self-selected
books every day.
• Our books are “just
right” for us to
practice our reading.
• We use our Café Menu
Board to learn reading
strategies that will
help us become better
readers.
Shared Reading
• We use Journeys (same as first grade).
• Whole group instruction and practice with
teacher modeling.
• Focus Areas: phonics, vocabulary, sight
word study, comprehension of grade level
text, and fluency.
• Themes and skill instruction are directly
related to small reading group work.
Reading Groups
• Students are placed in reading groups
according to instructional level and skill
needs.
• We work on building fluency, decoding
skills and written comprehension.
• Daily work sessions are provided to
practice reading and writing skills.
(called Daily 5)
Writing Workshop
• We follow the Lucy Calkins Units of Study
program, which includes personal narrative,
informational and persuasive (opinion) writing.
• We provide an opportunity to apply our
spelling/grammar skills from Journeys as we learn
about the craft of writing.
• We enjoy writing, learning and sharing with our
friends.

Marvelous Math Time
• We use the Chicago Everyday Math
program based on a spiral curriculum.
• Brisk paced and varied skills.
• Second Grade Goal: Memorize addition
and subtraction facts to 20. Practice,
practice, practice! Use the math games
and practice facts daily at home.
• Online math practice – For home use.

K-5 Reading and English Language Arts Learning Targets
K-5 Math Learning Targets
The math and RELA Learning Targets are based on the PA Core
Standards which is mandated by law.
Reminder…core curriculum requires a rigorous approach with
higher level thinking and application of skills studied. For example:
math tasks include written explanation of how the problem is
solved.
Super Science Fun Time!

Includes observing and taking care of your very own
caterpillar, and creating an edible one, too…YUMMY!

Homework for Second
Graders
• Extremely important to set the good habits now!
Parents should assist with our weekly common
core homework assignments. Try to follow the
daily assignments, as they are reviewed in school
each day.
Homework Books: Contain nightly assignments and
lists the spelling words for the week. Please sign
initials and return each day.
• Reading is a must every night. Reading logs are
required and are due at the end of each month.
