Think again: badminton is the world's fastest racquet sport -- a shuttle can leave the racket at speeds well over 150 mph. The non-linear flight characteristics of the shuttlecock and the pace of constant volleying (the shuttlecock cannot touch the ground during a rally) make badminton a lightning-fast sport which demands constant, highly concentrated actions: running, jumping, twisting, stretching, running backwards and striking. Besides explosiveness, quick reflexes and rapid hand-eye coordination, competitive badminton players must also possess superb aerobic endurance: in a typical two-game singles match, top players will travel more than a mile. Badminton has a rich history in the United States. The first badminton club in this country, the Badminton Club of New York, was formed in 1878. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA, China tied for the medal lead as Asian athletes won 14 of the 15 medals. The only non-Asian was another Dane, Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, who shocked the field with a gold medal in men's singles. The origins of the game date back at least 2,000 years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India, and China, and later reaching popularity in England. At Montclair State University we recently started a drive to provide greater opportunities to play badminton at all levels: you can play for fun and fitness or have your skills challenged by experienced players. In August alone we recruited about 30 players from the ranks of graduate students, staff and faculty: this is a popular sport! All play is in the small Panzer gym: the only place where badminton courts are marked. Opportunities to play include the "intra-murals" run by Campus Recreation, which are held in the evenings; and daytime play during the first 6 weeks of the semester on Tuesday and Thursday slots from 11:20 am - 12:55 pm. We are seeking other times to play but demand for gym space is high. Whether you are already a player or would like to try badminton for the first time, you are very welcome to join us.
