SAVE OUR PLANET Objectives: - to improve students' listening, reading, speaking and writing skills; - to enrich pupils' knowledge in vocabulary and to develop their habits and skills in using them in various exercises; - to motivate them in expressing their own opinions on the topic; - to teach students to save the environment. - to develop pupils' attention, memory and initiative. : - to teach students to be responsible for keeping our environment clean. Equipment: pictures, songs, drawings, CD “Save the Earth”, handouts (HO), a computer, a projector, a screen. Quotes: “Mother Planet is showing us the red warning light - ‘be careful’ – she is saying. To take care of the planet is to take care of our own house.” The Dalai Lama “The deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers … the earth is our mother … all things are connected like the which unites one family.” Chief Seattle (1854) Procedure I. Warming-up. Звучить мелодія пісні “Spring song” Після прослуховування пісні ставлю запитання T: Are you romantic persons? Are these sounds familiar to you? I think you have enjoyed the music. And what scenes were created in your imagination? What ideas does the melody give you? P1: I hear the birds singing on the branches of the trees. They are happy and merry and everybody who listens to them feels glad to be alive. P2: I see wonderful sunflowers. They are big and in blossom. They have brown hearts and look marvelous on the bright blue background of the sky. P3:I see a forest and red berries . They look very appetizing for birds that are hungry. P4: I think the music is about a garden full of birds. Garden is a symbol of nature that gives air to breathe, food, fruit and vegetables to eat. P5: I hear the beautiful sounds of the water in the river. P6: I realize that the world around us is fantastic, colourful and full of wonders. T: I see you believe that the world is really wonderful. Let’s read the quotations of the famous people on the blackboard and try to understand them and guess what the topic of our lesson is. (The pupils read the quotations on the blackboard) Let’s start our lesson with a song “The Future’s In Our Hands” Answer my question: What is the topic of our lesson? P: The topic of our lesson is the Environment. T: Yes, you are right. Today we are going to speak about environmental problems and suggest ways how to help the environment. II. The main part Brainstorming. Teacher: Your task is to go to the blackboard and write down the words associated with the word “Earth”. Sort out the words into two categories: positive words write on the right and negative words on the left side of the picture of the Earth. water birds pollution air rubbish oceans extinction mountains disappearing forests species lakes nuclear tests take care electricity weapons plants animals to litter birds danger fish to pollute water rubbish air harmful people bad health life to kill the sun beautiful to cut dow wonderful T: And now make up the sentences with the written words. Ps : We must take care about nature. We should turn the light off when we leave the room. We must protect animals and plants. People must keep the water clean and the air fresh. We have polluted many rivers, seas and lakes. We have thrown rubbish into the oceans. We have cut down millions of trees in the rainforests. A lot of animals and plants have disappeared forever. People have polluted the air with our cars and factories. People all over the world have got serious health problems. More and more people fight against nuclear tests and nuclear weapons. Water pollution has killed millions of fish. The problem of environment is a serious one. Trees are important natural resources. We should plant trees. We can recycle paper and glass, plastic bottles and cans. I think reusing things we can save our natural resources. Throw rubbish in a rubbish can. Feed animals and birds. They are part of our environment. Always remember to save water. Rainforest are disappearing and the birds and animals are disappearing too. Do not litter. Ecological problems are deforestation, ozone holes, acid rains and the global warming T: And now let’s exchange your opinions about nature and its beauty. Some of you were given the tasks to make projects about the environment or design leaflets. Present your projects in the class, please. P1: P2: I have designed a leaflet about the earth. T: Today we have a guest. Her name is Oksana. She is a member of the international environmental organization “Greenpeace”.You may ask her some questions. Questions: - What is Greenpeace? (Greenpeace is a world organization which saves plants, animals and people.) When is Earth Day? - (April 22 is Earth Day.) - What does the word “environment” mean? (Environment is everything that is around us: water and air, animals and plants.) - What are the main problems of nature? (The nature is in danger now. The trees and animals are killed by people, by the polluted air and acid rains.) - - What is “acid rain”? (Air pollution can cause water pollution called “acid rain”. Acid rain contains harmful acid which can damage the environment.) Is oxygen important for our life? (Oxygen makes up 21 per sent of the Earth’s atmosphere. And nowadays tons of smoke and gas are emitted into the air. If there is no oxygen from the trees, the life dies.) Do you agree that the environmental problems are rooted in the economy? ( To my mind not all environmental problems are rooted in the economy. Some people consider themselves “lords and kings of nature “ and they don’t think about future generations.) Presentation “Nature Is In Danger” T: I have found some information about problems of the environment. T: Let’s have some practice in reading. Before reading study useful vocabulary: Civilization Pesticides [sɪvɪlaɪˈzeɪʃ(ə)n] цивілізація [′pestɪsaɪd] пестицид, (хімічний) засіб Catastrophe Make [kə′t?strəfɪ] катастро́фа up the word combinations: serious rains acid problem global wastes industrial dangers greatest warming While-reading Teacher: Your task is to read the text and fill in the gaps using the words from the box. PEOPLE START POLLUTION. - PEOPLE CAN STOP IT The pollution of the land, air and water is the problem of civilization. It is one of the greatest dangers on the Earth. Ecological problems are deforestation, ozone holes, acid rains and the global warming. The seas are in danger. They are filled with industrial wastes and pesticides. Every 10 minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. Air pollution is a very serious problem. The greater problem is nuclear power stations. We all know Chornobyl tragedy. People are beginning to realize the environmental problems. They join international organizations and green parties. All countries ought to save the Earth from an ecological catastrophe. After-reading Teacher: Let’s work in pairs. Ask each other questions and answer them. (The question are on the blackboard) 1. What is the title of the text? 2. What is the problem of civilization? 3. What are ecological problems? 4. Are the seas in danger? 5. What happens every 10 minutes? 6. Air pollution is a very serious problem, isn’t it? 7. What is the greater problem? 8. Do you think all countries ought to save the Earth? T: Summarize the text, retell it. The word stair will help you ( The sentences are written on the blackboard) The pollution of the land…………… Ecological problems are…………… The seas……………… Every 10 minutes………………. Air pollution is……………… The greater problem is……………. All countries ought to………… Group work T: Let’s work in groups . Your task is to put the words in the correct order and make up a dialogue. Group #1 You have to make up questions. Questions: Earth, like, the, is, What ? P1: What is the Earth like? What is there on the Earth? Who lives on the Earth? What are the problems of our planet? What makes our world beautiful? Group #2. And your task is to make up answers. Answers: Beautiful, wonderful, and, interesting, Earth, the, is The Earth is beautiful, it is wonderful and interesting. There are a lot of rivers, lakes, seas, mountains, forests on the Earth. Pupils: Millions of people, birds, animals, fish live on the Earth. Plants grow on the Earth. They are pollution of land, water, air, rubbish, extinction, disappearing animals and plants, nuclear weapons and nuclear tests. Blue oceans and seas, lakes and rivers, green forests and parks, high mountains make our world beautiful. T:On the eve of a wonderful spring holiday Earth Day we are going to discuss the ways of environmental protection. But to start making solutions we should know the kinds of pollutions. Let’s recollect the names of natural disasters. Group #1 P1: is the Earth What like? What there is the Earth on ? lives Who on Earth the? are the problems What of our planet? makes What beautiful our world ? Group #2 beautiful , wonderful, and, interesting, The Earth, is are , There , a lot of rivers, forests . on the Earth, lakes, seas, mountains, birds, animals, fish Millions of people, live on the Earth. are They pollution of land, water, air, disappearing animals and plants, nuclear weapons make our world beautiful and parks , green rubbish, extinction, nuclear tests and. Blue oceans and seas, lakes and rivers, forests T.: -Students we’ve got a message from the Earth. Listen to it, please. “Dear brothers and sisters, Take care of me. Don’t cut the wild flowers. They may all disappear. Plant a tree a year. Remember, from one oak a forest grows. It’s very simple. Never throw or break glass bottles. You’ll damage the land. Take what you need from me. You are my parts. So, your challenge is to restore an ecological balance and to keep me clean and healthy for future generations, Love, your Earth”. T: Let’s play the lexical game. Take the cards (Додаток 2) and divide into two groups (red and green). Find the topic words in the word square. I’ll give one minute. І аsked you to prepare some posters for today. I think you are ready Come up to the blackboard, put your promises around the picture of a man and announce it. Possible promises: 1. I promise to save electricity, water and paper. 2. I promise to ride a bike and use public transport. 3. I promise not to litter our streets, rivers and forests. 4. I promise to clean up after picnics and playing outdoors. 5. I promise to plant trees, flowers. 6. I promise to reuse things. 7. I promise to feed birds and animals in winter. 8. I promise not to leave a fire in the forest. 9. I promise to use 3 R’s (recycle, reuse, reduce). 10. I promise to live in harmony with Nature. 11. I promise not to destroy bird’s nests. 1. Keep your souls clean! Don’t pollute them with anger, envy or selfishness. And the world will be a better place to live! SUMMING – UP T: Let's make up a conclusion of the lesson. What did you learn at our lesson? P: We learnt more about the problems of the environment. We learnt how to help the environment. We made promises to keep the environment clean. HOME ASSIGNMENT Teacher: Your home task is to write an essay about environmental problems in our village and to find green
