TRACK AND FIELD TEAM WINS WESTERN STATE CONFERENCE TITLE
& Sets New Record In Women’s 4x400 Relay
MOORPARK, Ca. – The West Los Angeles College women’s track and field team won the 2010 Western States
Conference Championships on Saturday with 188.5 points, defeating Glendale by 13 points and setting a new conference
record for the 4x400 relay. The men’s team finished 2nd with 122 points. Moorpark won the title for the 11th consecutive
year with a total of 127 points. The combined track and field title went to West LA College.
The top 6 finishers in each event qualified for the Southern California Prelims, which will take place this Saturday, May 8th
at Saddleback College.
West was led by sophomore, Starasia Childs who won the triple jump with a bound of 40’6” and 100 hurdles in a time of
15.26. She also finished 2nd in the long jump and 4th in the 400 hurdles. Donetta Rye led 1, 2, 3, sweep in the long jump
with Childs and Toni Cooper. In addition, Cooper had a pair of runner-up finishes in the high jump (5’1”) and triple jump
(37’4.5”), and finished 5th in the 400 hurdles. Keshawna Fisher had a pair of 2nd place finishes in the 100 (12.04), and 200
(24.82), and teamed up with Cydney Graham, Areana Anthony, and Reanna Davison for the 4x400 relay title with a time
of 3:49.86. The foursome also teamed up the 4x100 relay for a 2nd place finish. It was a well rounded team effort that
gave the Wildcats the team title as they scored in 15 of the 20 events.
In addition to their relay title, Davison led a 2 through 4 finish in the 400 meters with Graham and Anthony. Anthony
placed 6th in the 200 and Graham was 8th. Cara Jones finished 2nd in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, and placed 6th in
the 100 meters. In addition to Childs and Jones 1-2 finish in the 100 hurdles, Shawnique Williams, Summer Griffin, and
Brittney McKinley placed 5th and 6th and 7th respectively. Williams also placed 3rd in the shot put with a throw of 40’9”.
McKinley scored in 3 other individual events as well with 6th place finishes in the high jump, pole vault, and triple jump.
Candace Chatman scored valuable team points by finishing 4th in the high jump, 5th in the triple jump, and 6th in the long
jump. The Wildcats also had a pair of scoring 8th place finishes with Stancia Baker in the 800 meters and Erica Clark in
the 3000 meter steeplechase.
The men were led by trio freshman who won individual conference titles. Patrick Hunter won the long jump with a leap of
24’0.25” and placed 2nd in the triple jump at 47’8.25”. Anthony Riley won the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.95 and placed
4th in the 1500 meters at 4:05.19. Kevin Ally was the 100 meter champion at 10.62 and placed 4th in the 200 meters at
21.68. Ally also was part of the victorious 4x100 relay along with Lentrail Hicks, Brian McDade, and Justin Kirkland.
Hicks, was 4th over 100 meters and was the runner-up at 200 meters with a time of 21.49. Ally, Riley, and Hicks teamed
with Jonathan Kelly to finish 2nd in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:14.95. Kelly was runner-up in the 400 hurdles
as well.
Other notable men’s performances include, Lovelle Starks who placed 3rd in the high jump and 6th in the triple jump.
Raman Singh followed up his school record performance in the 10k last week, with a 4th place finish in the 5k. Jevoni
Buchanan and Paul Bailey finished 5th in the 200 and 3k steeplechase respectively. Miguel Ruiz, and twins, Isaac and
Isaiah Gray placed 6th, 7th, and 8th in the 800 meters.
