Information Commons Information Commons • What is the Information Commons? – a central facility that integrates information resources with information technology – a place that aims to prepare students for the future by helping them learn information literacy skills today – a place for students and faculty to meet and make use of the wealth of information available to them Information Commons Information Commons • What makes up the Information Commons? – Workstations: over 150 full service computers that give clients access to the Internet, on-line library catalogues, e-mail, and office productivity tools like Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. – Express stations: Quick reference computers to on-line library catalogues Information Commons • What makes up the Information Commons? – Printing stations: Students can use their campus cards to print black and white copies from five laser printers Information Commons • What makes up the Information Commons? – Instruction spaces: 50 computers will be set up in a large instruction space for students to sign up for tutorials to learn information literacy skills – a smaller instruction space is also available for students who want or need more individualized attention Information Commons • What makes up the Information Commons? – Collaborative Workrooms: A place in the library where you can meet and TALK with others about projects! These rooms will be bookable, hold up to 8 people, and are equipped with desktop workspace, ethernet connections (for laptops) and have access to audio equipment. The Information Commons Service Desk will be able to help clients with both information (library reference) and technology (computing) questions. Staff will also provide accurate referrals for other types of questions.
