CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED
Basketball asa sport has many problems that offer
exoellent fields for research, and this thesis investigates
one of them.
This stUdy deals with (1) the number of shots
taken, (2) the peroentages of shots made to those taken, and
·,
t,
(3) the position on the floor from where the player took the
shots.
The stUdy covers the basketball seasons of 1934-1930,
1935-1936, and 1936-1937.
The basketball shooting of the
members of the Wiley High School team and their opponents
furnished the material for the stUdy.
Previous~.
manr
Coaches have charted their teams for
years, but no definite results of such charting have
been available for stUdy.
H. D. Edgren, of George Williams
College, gave the number of shots taken by his team with the
range, average, and median when winning andlosing. l
This
was the only reference found where any definite information
was given.
Several styles of score books, on sale in Sporting
Goads Stores, have shot charts to be kept aJ.:Qpg".ow.,t:ir:_llhe

score.
One of these suggested the uses to be made of the
oharts as follows:
1.
Analysis of individual team players may be made.
Gains in shooting accuracy over a given period are
shown.
3. Detection of-natural position on floor in which individual player shows exceptional accuracy. Plays may
be developed to use this accuracy.
4. Areas on the floor where the pls.yer constantly misses may be assigned as passing areas instead of shooting
areas.
.
6. The use of this chart in Scouting competing teams
will disclose shooting positions in opponents' offense. 2

THE PROBLEM
problem.
The purpose of this stUdy
was to find how a coach could use shot charts in his basket-

the stUdl.
This stUdy shows that a
coach using shot charts has definite information on the

ebility of each of the players on his basketball squad.
With this information the coach knows that he plays the best
man for each position on the team.
This stUdy also shows
the coach definite ways in which shot charts as scouting
devices help him to win games.
II.
DEl!'INITIONS OF TERMS USED
Individual charts.
A chart of half of a basketball
court was made for each player.
At the top of the chart
space was left for the player's name and number, and above
that, space was left for putting down the number of shots
taken and made for the first half, the second he.lf, end the
whole game.
Eaoh time the player' shot and missed the basket a dot
was placed on the chart in approximately the position on the
floor from where he took the shot.
Each time this player
shot and made the basket, an "x" wse placed on the ohart in
approximately the position on the floor from where he took
the shot.
These shote were counted, and the results were
placed on the
1~e
chaf~
for eaoh half and for the whole game.
upper figure denoted the shots taken; the lower figure
denoted the shots made.
Tssm cp.arta.
Team charts were a group of' ten individ..
ual c~arts arranged in two rows of five with a space above
~~em for team ~tatietic8.
Two team oharts were plaoed on a
4
sheet of paper, so that a team and its opponent could be
oharted at the same time.
Cumulated charts.
Each player had a large (one chart
to the sheet of paper) permanent ohart.
After each game,
his shots were taken from the individual chart and cumulated
on the permanent chart, so that it showed the number of
shots taken and made altogether.
Percentage tables.
In this study each player's per-
centage of shots made in each game, to those taken in each
game, was kept.
Percentage, as used in this thesis, means
the ratio of a part to the whole.
Eaoh percentage was
ohanged to its decimal form; the result was carried out to
three places, and it was given on the basis of a thousand,
as .143 or .429, in the same way that the newspapers give
the'percentage of baseball teams.
The percentage of the
team and its opponents was recorded in the same manner.
These percentage tables for individuals and team were kept
for eaoh game and cumulated for a total percentage for all
games.
CHAPTER II
THE
~UESTIONNAIRE
With very little literature available on the charting
of the shots of basketball players, there was but one way to
determine whether or not coaches were charting the shots of
their teams.
This information was obtained by means of a
questionnaire.
The questionnaire.
sent to all members of

The questionnaire was one part of a double postal card.
All
the coach had to do was to check and mail the card.
The questionnaire was mailed to the coach of the
schools that were members of The Indiana High School
letic Association.

The name of the coach was obtained from

results.
Table I, gives statistics
shOwing the current usage of shot charts by the coaches of
Indiana, the sectional winners, the regional winners, and
the four state finalists.
The questionnaire showed that a large percentage,
approximately seven out of eight, of Indiana coaches were
using shot charts in various ways as an aid in their coaching.
The coaches of the better teams, as shown by the state
tournament, used shot oharts more than the average coach.
This use was determined as a result of many score books giving a
ch~rt
for recording the shots as well as the score.

CHAPTER III
PRACTICE SCRIMMAGE CHARTS
Charting practice scrimmage gives the coaoh a
com~
parison of individual players, both offensively and de fena1vely.
It tests methods or styles of play for the coaoh
enabling him to use the one that suits his team the beat;
and it shows the improvement of his team and the individual
player.
How taken. The charts were taken by a boy trained
to chart not only the practioe sorimmages, but all games as
well.
He had the same status as a senior student manager,
going on all the trips and being admitted to all games free
of charge.
He kept time and charted both teams when a sorim-
mage was held.

Comparison of players started
With. the first practioe scrimmage, held on Deoember 3, 1936.
Mahan was a newcomer to the Wiley, squad, having moved to
lI'.:t'r"Ha~te in.the summer of 1936.
In this first sorimmage,

Chart 1, he played against the team picked for the varsity,
and took eight shots.
On the substitute team, however, he
took one shot more than any member of the varsity team.
He
had b.een out for football and had not practiced, while four
of the five men he played against had been practioing for
over a month.
Mahan immediately became one of the varsity.
He played either guard or forward.
His ability was shown in
the scrimmage on Deoember 17, Chart 2, page 12, when he
guarded Aldridge, a regular for the previous year.

Aldridge
held Mahan sooreless, but allowed him to take two shots.
At
the end of the twelve minutes, Mahan substituted for Aldri¢ge and Rustimier substituted for Mahan, and guarded him.
In eight minutes Mahan took three shots and made two of them.
His'oomparison with the rest of the squad, offensively and
defensively, placed him as one of the 'first six varsity
players.
This sorimmage chart for Deoember 17, showed the rele.tlva abilities ot-the first six players, and the remainder
of the varsity squad.
The first team, including Mahan, took
. tb.irt.y-six Shots, making thirteen of them while the Bubstitutes took only six shots and made One.
Two of these six

His ability was shown in the scrimmage chart
for December 10, Chart 4, when he played against McLaughlin
for thirty-two minutes.
Gregson took seven shots and made
two of them, but he let MoLaughlin shoot twenty-six times
and make nine baskets.
His net lOBS for the thirty-two min-

Hart, Wiley's substitute center, was weak both offensively and defensively.
This was shown in the scrimmage on
December 10, Chart 4, when he played against Hess, the regular center, for thirty-two minutes.
He got eight shots and
made none, while Hess got twenty shots and made ten.
This

CHAPTER IV
GAME SHOT CHARTS
Charts of the shots in the Wiley ge,mes were taken for
the seasona of 1934-1936, 1936-1936, and 1936-1937.
A per-
centage table for the team and for each player was kept for
i
each season.
A cumulated chart for each player was kept
, i
showing all of the ahots which were taken during the season.
Use

individual charts.
The individual game
charts were used by the coach between halves of the game;
and afterwards in practice to encourage players, to show
them their faUlts, and to compare them with one another offensively and defensively.

The percentage tables
were "kept: to show the improvement of the team and individual players during the progress of the season, and to give a
comparison of the Wiley team with other teams.

taken,
The shot charts of all the Wiley games
were taken by a boy who was trained to take them.
He did
nothing during the game except record the shots taken by the
29
individual members of both teams; and tabulated them by
h~lves
and for the whole game.
He sat near enough to the
Bcorer to get the names of the sUbstitutes, but he never
tried to keep score.
His charting was checked several times
during the season, but he was never found to have made a
mistake; he was dependable.
He transferred the game shots
to the cumulated chart, and kept the percentage table up to
date.
Thus the coach was relieved of all of the detailed
work, so that all he had to do was to use the charts and
tables.
Comparison of teams.
shown in Table V.
The oomparison of teams was
In the first game of the 1936-1937 Season
with Spencer, Wiley shot sixty-eight times and made thirteen
baskets for a percentage of .191.
Spencer shot forty-five
times and made ten baskets for a percentage of .222.
The
offensive power of Wiley was low as represented by their
percentage of .191.
Their defensive power was low as they
let their opponents make a percentage of .222.
For the sea-
eon as a whole. the team's Offensive and defensive strength
varied continuously.
Offensively the
team~s
percentage, as
represented by the total shots taken and made, gradually increased for the whole season.
Defensively the teamls per-
,entage, as represented by the gradually decreasing percentage
0:1:
the opponents, gradually increased until in the Ash-
bora game where It sta~ted to deorease ,and them. continued

to decrease gradually until the end of the season.
The opponents of Wiley played different styles of
ball, and these styles determined the number of shots taken
and made.
Teams taking a large number of shots and making a
fair percentage of them beat teams taking a fewer number of
shots, but making a large percentage of these shots. note
Wiley versus Spencer. Table V, pages 30 and 31.
The total
number of shots taken was not as important as the fact that
to win, a team's individual members had to average more baskets made than their opponents, unless the difference was so
smell that foul shots overbalanced this difference.
In the
Wiley-Sullivan game, Table V, pages 30 and 31, Wiley averaged one and four-fifths baskets per man, while Sullivan
only averaged one and three-fifths baskets per man; but foul
shots made by Sullivan overbalanced this difference and
Sullivan won the game.
Use £! !h21 charts.
Shot charts showed the individ-
ual offensive and defensive ability of players.
They showed
the number of shots ,.a player took. the spots on the x"loor
from where he took them, and the number of shots he made.
They also gave the same statistios for his guarded opponent,
eo that the oosch had definite proof of the player's ability
and value to the team.
lIe.surius·the abi1itl .2!playe:rs.:9z ehot charts.
33
Soore books gave only the number of suooessful shots.
Many·
times this was misleading, because a player soared several
baskets in an easy game; but when he oame to a hard game
where guarding was better, he was useless to the team.
Shot
oharts revealed these weak players before they became permanent parts of the team.
Ladson, Table VI. a forward on the 1934-1935 Wiley
team, was a player who looked good in the first game of the
season, but he did not live up to expectations.
In the
first game he made three' baskets out of ten shots, and considered himself a permanent forward on the team.
In the
seoond game he made no baskets out of four shots; the third
game. one basket out of five shots; the fourth game, one basket out of ten shots; and in the fifth game, one basket out
of six shots.
He made six baskets out of thirty-five shots
for the five games or an average of one and one-fifth baskets out of seven shots per game.
In the sixth game Mc-
Laughlin. who had been substituting and making an average of
two baskets out of
game, took
~ight
shots for the time he was in the
Ladson's~place.
McLaughlin on the bench had more
pdtential pdwer than Ladson who waS playing the regular po...
sition for the first five games.
For the Season Ladson shot 108 times and made sixteen
basketsfo~ an average peroentage o,f .148. Table VI. Mc-

average percentage of .206, Table VII.
The time played for
,
the whole season was practically the same, yet there was
.058 difference in their value to the team in
favor.
McLaughlin~s
This difference would probably have been more if Mc-
Laughlin had played in the first five games, obtaining the
experience and becoming acclimated to his team mates.
Lad-
son, who had become careless in his shooting after the first
game, settled down to work after being benched, and regained
a position on the team.
Staleness.
Shot charts show staleness in individual
players, and in the team as a whole.
Wiley, after beating
Brazil by a big margin. became ove r"'confi dent , and this re ...
suIted in their beooming stale.
In the game with SUllivan,
they took forty-one shots, the lowest number taken in any
game all season. note Table V, pages 30 and 31.
Again, in
the seoond BraZil game. with the top-heavy score of the
first game in mind, the Wiley team again became over-confident, and again the number of their shots went down, Table
V, pages 30 and 31.
They took only forty-six shots and made
Six baskets for a game percentage of .130.
In the regional
game, with Martinsville. Wiley showed staleness by hitting
far below their average, Chart 12, page 37.
In the first
half Wiley shot twenty-four times and made only one basket.
Their season's average fOr the first' half was six baskets.
Mart1nav111e shot'twenty-six times and made aeven baskets.

WILEY VERSUS MARTINSVILLE
MAROB, 13,. 193'1
38
If Wiley had been hitting her regular quota of six baskets
per first half, the game would have been fairly even.
In
the second he.lf, Wiley again fell down on her average number
of seven baskets, making only five baskets out of twentyfive shots.
Martinsville shot thirty-two times during the
last half, and made eleven baskets.
For the whole game Wi-
ley shot forty-nine times and made six baskets; and let Martinsville shoot fifty-eight times and make eighteen baskets,
the greatest number of baskets scored against Wiley all of
the season.
Staleness was shown more by Wiley's defense or
guarding than by her offensive work.
The type of defense
set up by Martinsville would account for the lack of offense,
but not for the lack of defense which could only be attributed to staleness.
Responsibility.
The individual shot charts enabled
the coach to hold eaoh player responsible for his scoring,
and lack of scoring; and for the scoring or lack of scoring
of his guarded opponent.
did not make the
ba~ket,
Players shooting, although they
enabled other players to shoot from
the rebound and make the basket.
The Wiley coach, between halves of the game, encour'aged the players who had not been shooting to shoot more; or
t~
take !Dore oareful shotsi! they had not been hitting; and
showed them their guarding record as shown by the shots and
baakets of theIr'guarded opponent.
The sight of the shot
39
ohart with the shooting record of
ea~h
man spurred ea,ch
player on the Wiley team to greater efforts during the second half of the game, so that their scoring was usually
higher during the second half, and their opponent's scoring
was usually less.
Percentage tables.
A percentage table, for each
player on the team, the same as Table V, pages 30 and 31,
kept for the team, was kept, showing the number of shots
ken and made with the results cumulated game by game.
ta~
These
tables. Appendix A., pages 87-122, in most cases. showed the
gradual improvement of the player as the season progressed.
His average peroentage of shots made to those taken was
greater at the end of the Season than at the beginning.
This increase or improvement might not show in anyone game,
but a,ver a number of games, it did.
For the same reason
players improved from season to season.
Percentage tables
for McLaughlin, Tables VII. VIII, and IX, pages 36, 40. and
41, respectively, and Aldridge, Tables X, XI, and XII, pages
42, 43. and 44,
res~ectively.
th$s gradual improvement.
over a three year period show
McLaughlin. for the season of
1934-1936, took 180 shots and made thirty-seven for an aver-
age peroentage of ,206; for the season of 1936-1936, he took
506 shots a~d made 106 baskets for an average percentage of
.209; and for the season of 1936-1937, he took 470 shots and
mad~ 106 baskets" for an average peroentage of .226.

for a percentage of .229.
!l'he coach checked his coaching
methods by this improvement.
If it had not appeared, then
it would have been time to have changed the method of coaching.
Over a period of years, this improvement in the team
should show the effectiveness of different methods or styles
of play.
Cumulated charts.
A permanent cumulated chart was
kept for ea.oh player . on the team showing all of the shots
that were made and missed.
These oharts for the seasons of
1934-1935, 1935-1936, and 1936.1937 are found in Appendix
B•• pages 124..162.
After each game was played, the shots
taken during the game were transferred from the indiVidual
ohart to the cumulated ohart.
This chart showed: the side
of the floorfrom·wh1oh the player naturally shot; the area
46
on the floor from where he hit a great percentage of his
shots; and the areas from where he hit very few shots.
This
knowledge was used in placing players on the team, and in
bUilding team offense or plays to fit certain players.
Wi-
ley's style of play for the season of 193n-1936 was built
around the ability of Julian to play on the pivot line and
hit a large percentage of his shots there. Chart 13.
Summarl.
Shot charts of games gave the Wiley ooaoh
definite information about the offensive and defensive ability of eaoh one of his players; they showed the improvement
of his team; and enabled him to use the knowledge they gave
him in planning the coaching of his team.

CUMULATED SHOT CHART
FOR LLOYD JULIAN
193b-1936
CHAPTER V
SCOUTING
The value of shot charts in scouting.
The use of
shot charts in scouting gave definite information about the
offensive and defensive ability of each player on the opponent's team.
The use of shot charts revealed the poor shoot-
er or shooters on the team.
They showed weak and strong
shooters in certain areas or spots on the floor.
Charts
showed the guarding ability of each player by the number of
shots he allowed his guarded opponent to take.
The coach
used this knowledge to advantage in assigning guards to certain men or areas; and in planning the type of game to play
·
J

against this team.
How taken.
The charts, to be accurate, were taken by
one person who was trained for the position.
The charts were
tabulated by halves, and for the whole game.
Ohart information.
The ohart gave the number of shots
taken by eaoh player during the game.
It showed the spots on
the floor from where each player took his shots.
The charts
showed certain players shooting and hitting from certain
spots or areas.
They showed team plays or styles of play that
resulted in a team taking all of their shots from one or more
definite spate or areas.
They showed shots taken as a result
49
of plays being built around a star player.
Number of charts.
As many charts as possible were
taken of dangerous opponents.
Each chart aided the others
in showing the defensive and offensive ability of a team.
One chart showed a player's actions in that game only, but
several charts showed his average actions or ability.
Examples of
~
value of scouting charts.
1935, Wiley played State High School three times.
In 1934The first
time was a scheduled game, and was won by State by a score
of 34 to 25.
Wiley had not scouted them and had no shot

The second game was in the final game of
the Wabash Valley Preliminaries.
Wiley had charted the other
games State had played in the tournament.
State, in its game
with West Terre Haute, Chart 14, a comparatively weak team,
had made eleven of its eighteen field goals from under the
basket.
Mascari had made six of his seven field goals from
the right side close under the basket.

Mascari had taken
shots of his team.
In Statefs
game with Otter Creek, Ohart 15, page 51, they made thirteen
baskets and ten of these were close shots.
Mascari made four
baskets, and two of them were close and again to the right

STATE·VERSUS OTTER CREEK
W~SHVJl+;LEY •. 193'1)

From these charts Wiley decided to use a defense in
which four Wiley men would guard five State men as long as
these State men stayed out on the floor.
~ll
Julian, Wiley's
center, was placed under the basket to stop any State
player who might try to score from under the basket, and
Mascari in particular.
The rest of the team were given man
to man guarding assignments and instructed to leave their
man and bother Mascari in case he started to shoot long
shots out on the floor.
The shot charts showed that he
would not hit enough of his long shots to win the game.
In
the game, Mascari scored three field goals, two of them by
dodging Julian under the basket, and the rest of the State
team scored three more.
Wiley won the game by a score of 33
to 16, Chart 16.
In the Sectionals, Wiley again played State and used
the same style of defense.
Wiley won by a score of 21 to
16. holding Mascari to three field goals, two of which were
long shots, Chart 17. page 54.
These games with State showed a defense set up as a
result of scouting charts shoWing the opponents to be good
nshats" under the basket, but poor ones on long shots.
The
defense was set up to stop one star player, Mascari; and it
not only stopped Mascari but the whole team as well.

Glenn had a good team, having won most of
their games during the season.
Their players were tall and
the charts showed that their offense consisted of good passing with a pass to a man breaking under the basket for
in" shots.

Shot charts showed that Hendrix, their big cen-

Charts for Oblong in the 1936 Wabash Valley Finals

Charts 24, 26, and 26, pages 63, 64, and 66, respeotively.
Wiley played them man to man on defense, plaoing the best

Vogel held
Shipman sooreless, allowing him but five shots.
Wiley's offense oonsisted of passes to Julian on the
pivot line who either shot or passed to a player driving for

Ramey got several shots, but they were so hur-
ried that he did not make them.
The substitute guards could
not hold Ramey; and he beat Wiley, 26 to 2h, by scoring four
field goals in the remaining four minutes.
Honey Creek had Dale Royer, a high Soorer in every
game.
Vogel guarded him and held him to two field goals,
although he let him get eighteen Shots, Chart 29, page 69.
Wiley won the game by a score of 41 to 29.
Vogel's guard-
ing of Royer was the deciding factor in the game.
Shot charts taken for the coach, when he oould not
scout the game himself, revealed the expert shooters and
gave the ooaoh a oomparison of his team with that of the
opponent.
Wiley's game oharts for the season of 1936-1937 showed the guards to be weak shooters.

substitutes oame into the
game during the seoond half, Chart 12, page 37.
Realizing that Garfield was always the team to be
feared in the Seotionals, Wiley scouted the Garfield team
every game possible.
During the season of 1936 w 1937, seven
of Garfield's games were charted, Charts 30, 31, 32, 33, 34,
and 36, pages 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, and 76, respectively.
They showed Garfield taking an average of forty-eight and
four-sevenths shots and making an average of ten and sixsevenths shots.
Against Wiley on January 1, 1937, Table V,
pa,ges 30 and 31, they took thirty-seven shots and made seven.
Comparing their average with the Wiley average of fifty-nine
shots taken and twelve and one-fourth shots made, Wiley was
always offensively nearly three points better than Garfield.
Fontanet beat Garfield in the Sectiona1s, and Wiley beat
Fontanet by a soore of 36 to 12.
Comparing the shots taken and made by opponents, gave
a oomparison of Garfield and Wiley defensively.
The average
of the opponents of Garfield for seven games charted was forty-seven and six-sevenths shots taken per game, with nine and
two!!"s8venths shots made.
'f
The average of the opponents of Wi-
ley was forty-seven and three-one-hundredths shots taken, and
a1ght and Que-fourth shots made, TSQle V, pages 30 and 31.
Defensively Wiley was one basket ,better than Garfield.

ing this two points advantage defensively to the three
points advantage offensively, gave Wiley a total of five
points advantage over Garfield.
By the scores of games Wi-
ley did not chart, the Wiley coach knew that there was even
more than five points difference in the ability of the two
teams.
By using the offensive and defensive rating, it was
possible to predict fairly accurately the results of games
before they were played.
Summary.
Scouting teams by using shot charts gave
Wiley definite information about the shooting ability of
opponent players; so that the ooach planned his defense and
offense to take advantage of this knowledge.
During the
three years that the Wiley coach used shot charts, this
knowledge helped win several games that would have been lost
without the aid of shot charts.

CHAPTER VI
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS,
RESEARCH PROBLEMS
AND FURTHER
.1.
SUMMARY
The study, extending over a period of three years,
showed the following:
1.
The questionnaire, with replies from over half of
the coaohes of Indiana, showed that approximately seven out
of eight coaches were using shot charts in some form as an
~id
in their coaching.
2.
The charting of pract'-oe scriJJlJIl8ges oompared· the
ability of the team members with one another offensively and
defensively; and showed their improvement in shooting and
guarding ability •
. 3.
The charting of games showed the indiVidual of-
fensive and defensive ability of players under game competion.
It enabled the coach to place responsibility on play-
ers for their own scoring. and for that of their guarded
opponent.

The coacll, used this knowledge in placing his men on the
team. and in planning his style of play.
6.
In scouting. shot charts of opponents gave the
coach definite information on the number of shots taken and
made by each player.
They showed the position on the floor
from where these shots were taken.
The charts also showed
the guarding ability of each player by showing the number of
shots he allowed his guarded opponent.
The coach used this
information in planning his style of play against them.
II.
CONCLUSIONS
The charting of shots of individual players in pracw
tice scrimmages and games will be a great aid to a coach in
coaching his team •
. The scouting of opponents. by charting their shots in
games. will be the margin of victory in several close games

This form
At the bottom of the chart
is a line which has space for the names of the teams playing, the place, and the date of the game.
This chart may be
mimeographed in numbers adequate for a whole season or longer.

FURTHER RESEARCH PROBLEMS
The following problems arose during the study; they
were not investigated, as they did not definitely concern
the problem of shot charts as an aid in ooaching basketball:
1.
The finding of natural shooters in basketball by
the charting of shots in gymnasium classes B,nd intra.mura.l
games in the grades, in the Junior High School, and in the
Senior High School.
2.
The finding of the effectiveness of different
types of shots in basketball.

coaching, such as zone, long shot and rebound, fast break,
delayed offense, two hours of practice, three hours of practice, competitive practice, individual work, much goal shooting as compared to little goal shooting, and different styles
of passing.
5.
The charting of the time used in various phases
of a basketball game, such as passing, dribbling, shooting,
held ball, out of bounds. pivots. and holding the ball.
6.
The value of interest producing games and tests,
such as clock golf, game of 21, spot team 21, spot individual 21, and one minute test on long and short shots.
7.
The value of a check list for each indiVidual,
showing what he does in a game, inclUding his shots.
