Agents of Justice - TrueCity Hamilton

Agents of Justice: A True City Art Exhibit
Call for Artists:
"Agents of Justice" is an art exhibit happening as part of Hamilton’s annual True City Conference. This year’s
True City conference will be taking place on Friday, February 24th to Saturday, February 25th, 2012. It will be
held at Philpot Memorial Church (84 York Blvd, Hamilton).
We are looking for artists and communities of artists that are involved in the True City Network to submit art
work to be displayed at this year’s Conference. The overall theme of the conference is “Seek Justice.” We
would like to have artists to be able to contribute to this discussion through their respective mediums and
creativity.
Why does Art matter when we are talking about Justice?
The Arts and Justice are intricately connected. When an artist creates their work they add something new to
the world, they are in the business of creating rather than destroying. Justice is also an act of creativity, and
people who work for justice are also in the business of creating new opportunities, new ideas, and new hope,
rather than destroying the world by contributing to violence, hate and inequality.
Artists and Activists are often one in the same. Many people who are creating art shows are the same people
who work or volunteer for social service agencies and are actively involved in activist communities. Hamilton’s
galleries, cafes, and churches are filled with people who live in both the worlds of justice and art.
Submitting Art:
We are looking for artists who have a heart for justice, working in all styles and mediums. We have 2 Streams
of thought for how we can tie your art into this show.
Stream 1: Submit work that talks about a local or global justice issue that you care about.
Stream 2: Submit work that is representative of your art practice, and write an artist statement that talks
about the connections between Art & Justice.
Please email photos of your work and your artist statement to [email protected] to be reviewed for
consideration by the “Agents of Justice - True City Team.”
