Bridgeport High School Dance I, II, and III Mrs. Kinsey 3rd Block Gym Contact: LiveGrades What this course is about: Dance education is the study of a Fine Art. The goal of this class is to gain an appreciation for the “art of dance” and learn dance skills. Dance class will help students engage their skills of communication, critical and creative thinking. Students will also gain an awareness of the health and wellness benefits of dance. Students will have the opportunity to experience various dance genres, choreography, and performance experiences. The hope is for students to gain knowledge and skills from this class to enrich their educational experience. Student responsibilities: 1) Come to class prepared to work every day, this includes appropriate dress. 2) At the beginning of class go straight to your assigned seat prepared to do your bell ringer. (When you enter sit on the right bleacher of the Home side. You are to be sitting on the bleachers as soon as you enter class!) 3) Stay in your assigned area at the end of class until the bell rings. 4) Keep all cell phones and other electronic devices out sight and mind for the entire class. 5) Treat everyone with respect. (Listen when Mrs. Kinsey and others are talking.) 6) Obey all rules in the student handbook. Areas of study: Modern/Contemporary Ballet Jazz Hip hop Yoga Pilates Connections with other disciplines Ballroom Dance Choreography Artistic analysis/Critiques Dance history Current issues in the dance community Healthy living Reflective and creative processes Influences of dance Musical Theatre How your grades will be determined: 1) Your grade will be based upon daily participation, projects (written and performance), tests (written and performance), and daily bell ringers. 2) Projects and performances will be graded with rubrics. Each form of dance we study will have a written and performance test. 3) Bell Ringers will be collected and graded every Friday. 4) The standard seven point grading scale approved and printed in your agenda book will be followed. 5) Remember you will be assigned retest when the test grade falls below the requirement.. 6) Cheating (including plagiarism) will not be tolerated and immediate disciplinary action will be addressed. Below are examples of how you will be assessed in this class. Each unit we study will have a similar point system. We will strive to study at least four different dance units. All of these are subject to change. Bell Ringers Five points for each one. Daily Participation Five points for each day. Written Tests Will range from 30 to 50 points each Performance Tests Research Project Will be assessed with a rubric range from 20 to 50 points 100 points Oral Presentation of Research 100 points Class work such as writing assignments, worksheets, graphic organizers, flash cards, and etc. Dance Combinations Across the Floor Will range from 10 to 20 points each 20 points each *If one chooses to socialize and/or be passive during dance warm-up, group work or combinations across the floor points will be deducted away from one’s class participation. If a student forgets their appropriate dress then student will have an alternate assignment if they are unable to participate. If the alternate assignment is not completed then a zero will be issued for that day’s participation grade. When a student is absent, it is their responsibility to ask the instructor for their make-up work. *Please communicate with me if you ever have any questions or concerns.
