‘Values’ Nomination
Nominee: ______________________
Nominated By:__________________
What value has the person shown and how?
How did exploring the value of
SELF BELIEF guide your thinking and
behaviour?
In April and May, Year 4 explored
the value of SELF BELIEF
I loved making my
Minion movie about a
football team who kept
trying until they won
the match. Jamie
We discussed how important SELF BELIEF
was at home, sport and school
We also explored how important a
GROWTH MINDSET is.
We explored Self Belief in our learning logs this
month and made posters, presentation and even
movies and animations to show how important self
belief is.
Every time we find
something difficult in
Maths, we are reminded
to say I can’t do it yet!
Naomi
In our Values lesson this month, we had to
identify something we wanted to get better
at. Each time we felt we improved, we
moved ourselves further along the learning
line in the classroom.
Self Belief
Amy O’Kelly
1. Sports Personalities
• Jessica Ennis never said
“I’m going to give up”
• She carried on with her
sport
• She deserved and won
many medals
2. My Self Belief
• I wasn’t frightened when I
went on stage
• I had previous experiences
that told me I could do it
• We practised as hard as we
could to make sure
everything went right
3. Why is Self Belief
Important?
• If you don’t show self
belief you will not succeed
• It tells us we can do even if
other people say we can’t
• If we are stuck if we
believe we can do, then we
will succeed throughout our
lives
Thanks for
Watching
Watch this film and see if you can
work out what this month’s value is?

In JUNE we will be exploring the value of
SELF CONTROL
SELF CONTROL
Willpower
Selfdiscipline
Knowing
right from
wrong – and
acting on it!
Conscientiousness

SELF CONTROL
Managing
your mind
and your
emotions
SELF CONTROL
Manage Your Chimp
(for KS2 – and grown ups too!)

The Chimp
The Human
• These 2 parts of the brain developed first
• Either one could run your life on its own but when they
try to work together, there may be problems!
• They think in different ways – it’s like 2 different people
being in your head
The Human
The Chimp
• Emotional thinking
• Logical thinking
• Takes action based on feelings and• Looks for the truth and facts
impressions
• Takes action based on calm
• You have to learn to control it
thoughts
Both can function well separately but have trouble working together
Both parts of the brain react to every situation – but in
different ways.
Both are thinking what to do about it – but some of the
time they don’t agree.
The Chimp is more powerful than the Human and will
win – UNLESS you have learnt how to manage it!
Over reacts
Can be ‘paranoid’
(worries about things
that aren’t real’)
Jumps quickly to an
opinion
Doesn’t wait for all the
information
Very quick to judge
Emotional
Can twist the facts to
suit its opinion
Thinks calmly
Open minded, sees
others points of view
Uses reasoning skills to
work things out
Uses ‘common sense’is rational
Looks for the truth and
facts, then acts on this
Searches for all the
relevant information
Logical
The Chimp is an emotional
machine that will take over if
you allow it to. It is not good
or bad – it is a Chimp!
The Human must learn
to recognise when the
Chimp is in charge.
Don’t try to control it –
but learn to manage it!
Let’s think about some ways to help yourself
when you need to use SELF CONTROL?
STOP!
Take some deep
breaths
Talk to someone
you trust
Get some more
information, think
harder
Your Human part of your brain can help you
to manage your Chimp – it can help you with
SELF CONTROL?
This is just a tiny part of what Dr Peters’
work tells us. There’s much more to learn
if we’d like to…

Self Control
When I have lost my temper
I have lost my reason too,
I’m never proud of anything
Which angrily I do.
When I have talked in anger
And my cheeks are flaming red,
I have always uttered something
Which I wish I had not said.
In anger I have never
Done a kindly deed or wise.
But many things for which I felt
I should apologise.
In looking back across my life
And all I’ve lost or made,
I can’t recall a single time
When fury ever paid.
A value is a principle
that guides our
thinking and
behaviour
How does
SELF CONTROL
do this?
A quiet moment of prayer or reflection...
SELF CONTROL
As we reflect, think about
how SELF CONTROL
makes the world a better
place to be.
A prayer for all of us
Here in our school
Let us be peaceful at all times.
Let our rooms be full of happiness
and respect for each other.
Let love be in our hearts
With kindness and compassion for all.
Let us remember
In learning together,
We grow together
And succeed together.
What kind of situations do
you find yourself in when
SELF CONTROL is hard?
Is it more difficult to ‘be in
control’ at certain times or
under certain conditions?
(Think about when you are
tired or fed up).
What pushes
‘your buttons’?
What can you do to
manage your
emotions better when
you need to?
What other values
link to
SELF CONTROL?
Can you explain
how?
Can you recognise your
‘Chimp’?
You may want to call it
something else
depending on how it
behaves.
