I have chosen ten apps that pertain to early childhood education. I have divided the
apps into two sections. The first section identifies the mathematical apps for elementary
students in kindergarten to fifth grade. The second section is apps that are categorized
under ELA. Additionally, this section is broken into apps that focus on ELA, spelling, and
sight word recognition. Below are the selected app titles, descriptions, ratings, price, and
possible implementation method in a classroom setting.
Mathematics
1. “Additions- Maths Learning”
 Description: This application is for
mathematical practice in both
addition and subtraction. The
child that is playing can write in
either red or blue, erase with an
eraser when an error has been
made, and can recycle a wrong
answer by pushing the bin icon. If
the student wants to check their
answer, they simply click the
question in the box. As the child solves more correct answers, the problems will
become increasingly harder.
 Rating: 3 Stars
 Price: Free
 I personally would use this app as addition review before a quiz or test as a game.
The class can answer one at a time. If that particular student answered wrong, then
the student would be considered out, but would still need to correct their work
before sitting down. I feel that this is great review for both addition and subtraction.
Additionally, students can practice proper regrouping as the problems become more
difficult.
2. Grade 1 Math
 Description: This is another interactive
mathematical review app. This app can help students in
grades one through five with any math function that is
learned in that grade. Additionally, students can practice
math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division to gain mastery.
 Rating: 4.5 Stars
 Price: Free Version
 I would use this app as a small group instruction
during math if students would need help with addition,
subtraction, multiplication, or division. The app provides
instructions for each problem so I would be able to work through the instructions

with the student. The app also has visuals, which will help the students visually
learn, without needing an actual manipulative. I also like that there is a section
dedicated to math facts for students to practice because math facts should be
memorized as they are practiced more often.
3. Math Pony Race

Description: A student is assigned to a pony in
this game. To move the pony further on the racetrack, the child
must answer mathematical questions correctly. The objective is
to answer as many questions correctly as quickly as possible so
the player’s horse would win.

I would only use this app if multiple players could
play against each other. Through the free version, you cannot
race anyone but computer generated players. It is fun because
the questions are not just mathematical functions. They also
ask questions such as how many fingers do you have, where
different animals live, and what animal lives in a specific area.
However, I do not see myself using this because it is a oneplayer game.
4. Games Math Pirate- Quiz Trainer for Kids for First, Second, Third,
and Fourth Grader
FREE


Description: This app
gives students
mathematical
equations that will
help them learn
mental math. The
application can help
students with addition,
subtraction,
multiplication, and
division. There are multiple levels for children to play; as they unlock new levels,
the problems become progressively harder to solve.

I like this game because it is a quick math review on addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division. Again I would use this as a review of these
functions before a lesson as a pre-assessment, during a lesson for formative, or
as a review before a quiz or test.
ELA
5. Elementary




Description: This app allows students to
work on rhyming words, adjectives,
capitalization, punctuation, short vowels,
consonant chunks, and sentence features
such as nouns and verbs. The child is
prompted with a question pertaining to a
specific category. If a child is stuck, they
may click on the hint button for additional
help to solve the question.

I would use this app in writing workshop
conferences for students who are struggling with one of these areas that the app
focuses on. The app tracks the student’s progress and levels, so it would be easy to
identify where a child was struggling. It also allows children to practice needed
skills such as capitalization and punctuation. I would use these categories in
Spelling
6. Spell Friendzy
 Description: This app allows students to work on
sentence and word structure. Students are prompted with a
sentence that is missing a word. Then, four possible answers
are provided for the student to choose fro to complete the
sentence correctly. Additionally, students can play against a
friend, classmate, or opponent from somewhere around the
world through this app. This allows students to work together,
help each other, and still learn the correct spelling and how to
read each of the words.

 Students can use this as a review for high frequency
words and many sight words. The app allows students to work
both independently or with other students to answer the
questions correctly. So, I would intend to use this as a team work

activity in guided reading when focusing on spelling of high frequency words.
7. Spell Packs




Description: This app focuses on high frequency
Dolch and consonant- vowel- consonant words.
When playing the game, the app says the word
that should be spelled by the child. By clicking an
individual letter, the app pronounces the letter.
If the wrong letter is selected, the app will say
the wrong sound and place the letter back in the
letter pile. When the letters are dragged into the
blocks to spell the word, the app will say the
word that was formed. It helps children with
letter sound recognition, reading, and writing.

I could se myself using this app by having the game presented on the board.
Students could work on their white boards to write the appropriate word. I could
call one student to my laptop to correctly the word for the whole class to see. The
app could also be implemented in guided reading groups. If guided reading groups
are focusing on high frequency words, the app can be used as a formative
assessment.
Sight Words
8. Sight Words Flash Cards- list of sight words for kids




Description: This app provides sight words for students
in pre- kindergarten to second grade. The app focuses
on word recognition as well as pronunciation of the
word. It reads the sight word to the child. The child can
then flag a word that is unknown, go to previous words,
or go to the following card.

I personally do not know if I would use this app because
it says the word as soon as the page is flipped. It does
not allow time for the student to say the word out loud.
I feel as though that this app simply replaces sight words on index cards.
9. SightWords
 Description: This app allows students in first grade to learn
English Sight Words while still seeing the Spanish version with the
English. It allows the student to hear the English pronunciation of
the word. The student is also promoted with a sentence that

contains the word. Students can say the word and sentence. Before moving to the
next word, the teacher can make sure the student understands the words meaning.

I would use this app if I had any English Language Learners because the sight words
appear in both English and Spanish. I would use this one on one or in a small group
with ELL students, depending on their reading levels as well as their reading
comprehension skills.
10. WordBrain Witty Scholar- Recognize
Logical Vocab to Forge Compound
Words Together to Define the Correct
Answer Choice!





Description: The app presented the player with the
first part of a compound word. There are blank
boxes for students to drag letters into. Once the
student has placed letters in all blocks, the app will
either go to the next word, or make an error noise.
Then, the student would need to go back and fix
the word to make it correct.

I would use this as my word work during guided
reading when focusing on compound words. The
app is a great game that allows students to create
compound words based on the first part of the
word.
