XI:XI Focus: More Than Just A Gym!
A unique Sportivate project in
Salford is excelling in its ability to engage and train a very inspiring group of people. XI:XI Focus, delivered
at Cross Fit XI:XI in Worsley, delivers sessions for those with a diverse range of disability's and learning
difficulties three days a week. The club was set up by Wendy Boekhout who wanted to offer challenging yet
accessible physical activity to those unable for one reason or another to attend mainstream provisions.
Wendy felt there was a gap in accommodating those with disability but still pushing their boundaries to
improve physical health. However, the club is, as per tag line, more than that. They have created a real
warm and welcoming social space and give members a sincere sense of belonging and family.
Testament to the success of the sessions, they have applied and successfully gained further £9000 from
awards for all to help sustain and develop the club.
Resma Patel who fundraises for the club said “We are so happy “We are so grateful to GreaterSport
allocating us the kick-start funding we needed through Sportivate. This has allowed us to evidence the
need for our group and now with awards for all grant we aim to help more and more people and really
develop the club”
The group is looking forward to Rio
Olympics and Paralympics and
training hard.

James’s Story
James Atherton is 19 and has Autism. He has complex and multiple needs. James has had a
static group of friends since primary school age. Now he is becoming a young adult, he will
have to move into adult services education and no longer be surrounded by people he knows.
This was a real challenge for mum Margret and so she looked to find other avenues for James
to socialise and interact.
Margaret really struggled. There simply was not anywhere he could go that was appropriate,
safe, local and affordable. Then she came across Cross Fit XI:XI.
“This club has been a life saver. Since joining, the difference I have noticed in James is amazing. Not only has he lost half a stone in just 6 months, but his concentration, social skills and
concentration has dramatically improved. Ray (coach) understands his needs and is truly skilled
in adapting exercises so James understands his instructions. Having the right facilitator is crucial to his enjoyment”
Margaret knows James will always need additional support but she is hoping that when James
transitions to his new education provision, the confidence and skills he has developed at Cross
Fit XI:XI will help him to create new friendships and make the whole experience less daunting.
