Announcement of Support for Scientific Conferences and Workshops in the Greater
Safed Area
The Safed Scientific Workshop program funds scientific conferences, workshops and
summer schools in the Greater Safed area. The program is now soliciting proposals for
2009. Six grants of $10K will be awarded. Organizers are welcome, and in fact
encouraged, to obtain additional funding from other sources to supplement this sum.
Scientific conferences may include (1) major international meetings; (2) workshops
designed to promote informal exchange on frontier scientific problems; (3) schools
focused on making state-of-the-art research problems and methods accessible to graduate
students and postdocs. Number of participants will normally be between 30 and 80. The
duration will normally be for 5-6 days, but innovative proposals for longer programs are
welcome.
Scientific areas for which funding will be considered includes physics, chemistry,
materials, mathematics, computer science, biology and science teaching.
Interdisciplinary meetings are particularly encouraged. Priority will be given to meetings
that are likely to have a significant impact on the education and training of young Israeli
scientists, to promote new areas of frontline scientific research, and to bring major
international figures in a field to Israel.
The Greater Safed area extends virtually to Rosh Pinna, but priority will be given to
meetings that are likely to have some impact on the cultural renewal of the Old City of
Safed. A minimum requirement is that all meetings have a tour of the Old City of Safed.
For primary consideration, applications should be received by May 31, 2008.
Applicants will be notified around the end of June, 2008. An application form is

Proposal for a Grant for a Scientific Workshop in 2009

The Safed Scientific Workshop program is offering grants of up to $10,000 for scientific
workshops held in Safed during 2009. The workshops are selected by the program’s
Scientific Advisory Board. The grant is conditional on the workshop being held in Safed,
and that acknowledgement of the Safed Scientific Workshop program is made in the
workshop publications.
