Our Mission Statement
At Jelli Tots Nursery we are committed to providing an inclusive environment in
which all children can thrive and develop to their full potential.
Our staff team aim to offer a friendly and welcoming presence for children, parents
and visitors. Practitioners are well qualified and committed to advancing their skills
and knowledge through reflective practice and continuous professional development.
They develop close relationships with children; ensuring that each child’s physical,
emotional and educational needs are catered for.
We recognise parents as their child’s first and most enduring educators, and
therefore see it as a priority to develop and maintain strong partnerships; sharing
and discussing their child’s experiences and development at home and within the
setting. We maintain an ‘open-door’ policy, where parents are welcomed into the
nursery.
We aim to offer an exciting and stimulating learning environment. Children learn
through a range of child-initiated and adult-led activities, and open-ended resources
are widely used to capture children’s interest and imagination. Our practitioners
support and monitor children’s progress; carefully planning for their next steps and
helping them to become confident to try out new things and take risks in their
learning.
We take a holistic approach to children’s development; looking at their well-being,
involvement, physical needs and social skills in addition to their academic progress.
Our curriculum plans are based upon children’s own ideas and interests; helping
them to enjoy their time at nursery and become active and enthusiastic learners.
‘Staff are enthusiastic in their teaching and children are engaged and eager to learn.
Children make excellent progress in all areas of Early Years Foundation Stage’.

‘Parents are fully involved in their children's learning and their partnership with the
nursery is exceptional.
We recognise and value the role of parents in their child’s education and ensure that
parents are informed about the nursery curriculum, events and activities through
newsletters, notices, the nursery website and our texting system.
The relationship between the home and setting begins with a home visit before your
child starts at Jelli tots. The manager and your child’s key worker will visit you to

plan appropriate experiences for them when they start at nursery.
Parents are encouraged to play an active role in their child’s learning by taking an
interest in our activities and topics and linking these to activities and discussions at
home. Children’s individual profile books are kept in their trays and can be taken
home on a Friday and returned to the nursery on a Monday. Parents are invited to
add photographs, comments observations and anything else that is relevant to keep
staff informed of their child’s learning and interests outside of nursery.
Parents are welcome to read with the children, join in with activities such as cooking,
art, gardening and cultural events, to help on trips, make signs in their home
languages for us to display and are invited to have breakfast with us every term. Our

Key Persons:
This begins prior to children’s admission when your child would be allocated to a member of
staff who will act as their key person. You will be given a small booklet to fill in information
about your child, which can be discussed during the home visit.
Your child’s key person will bring a bag of toys to the home visit and spend approximately
30-45 minutes playing and interacting alongside your child. Parents have welcomed this and
report that home visits work extremely well. This gives your child an opportunity bond with
their key worker, which helps with the settling in process. You will also be invited to visit the
setting for one morning which allows your child to become familiar with the nursery
environment and routine.
Key persons play an important role in the care and well-being of their key children and work
together with parents to provide continuity of care between the home and setting. They
monitor the progress of each child, using observations to inform curriculum planning and
keep children’s developmental profiles up to date. We have an open door policy and
parents are welcome to spend the first thirty minutes of the session in the nursery with their
child, which allows time to exchange information, settle your child into an activity and get to
know your child’s key person.
Key groups include children of a similar age and have
between three and seven children. We endeavour to keep
children in the same key group throughout their time at Jelli
Tots. This helps to create a strong bond and sense of
belonging between adults and children in the group. Children
have an allocated time each day where they spend time in
their key groups and are encouraged to join in with an adult
planned activity.
The Nursery Curriculum
The nursery promotes children’s learning through child led play with opportunities for
children to participate in adult planned activities and time allocated for small group sessions.
Adults scaffold children’s learning by interacting during self-initiated play, providing
appropriate resources to extend children’s interests and planning activities that are
differentiated to meet individual needs. Our Ofsted report highlights that the children are
“Children are highly motivated and explore an extensive range of challenging
learning experiences and activities”.
The nursery is divided up into several ‘workshop’ areas, for example the literacy area,
creative arts and crafts area. These are stocked with a range of resources and equipment,
which the children can access, allowing them to become independent learners.
7
Staff plan activities in response to children’s interests and
stages of development, our planning covers themes and
topics that support all areas of learning. Free-flow activities
encourage children to exercise choice and explore both
indoors and outside. To compliment this, the nursery plans
outings and local walks, as well as encouraging visits to the
setting by members of the local community.
The curriculum
We follow the Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage as guidance to
support each child’s learning and development. This is divided into seven areas which are all

where they learn songs, rhymes, words and phrases. Parents are asked
to make a contribution of £10 per month towards these activities.
Jelli Tots nursery consults with parents, staff and children each year on their views about
the nursery. This is used, along with data collected through observations of children and
staff, to review all aspects of the setting and to set targets for development and
improvement.
In March 2012 the nursery gained an enhanced ICAN accreditation from the ICAN charity.
The early talk accreditation recognises settings which have undertaken training to develop
their skills and knowledge of communication development, and which show good practice in
promoting speech, language and communication development in children. Our latest Ofsted
report states
‘There is a strong focus on supporting speech and language. Sessions are
delivered to children with an identified need and for those who would benefit from
extra support’.

conflict resolution Our aim is to work towards a situation in which children can develop selfdiscipline and self-esteem in an atmosphere of mutual respect and encouragement. We
support children’s interactions and play by encouraging turn taking, sharing and waiting.
