The major consists of core courses and fields. The core courses are subdivided into “Core courses: Basics” and “Core courses: Method-oriented and research-oriented” and cover microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, econometrics and mathematics. Students can choose to take only method-oriented and research-oriented core courses by way of preparation for a doctorate (this option is similar to the first year of a PhD programme). However, they are also free to choose between core courses and fields, which means they can focus on application-oriented areas. To do this, they take the “Core courses: Basics” and substitute specific topics with particularly relevant method-oriented and research-oriented courses. The specialist fields allow students to study a number of the following in more depth: Economic Design and Behaviour, Markets and Institutions, Macroeconomics, Money and Financial Markets, Macroeconomics, Growth and Inequality, Public Economics und Statistics and Econometrics. As students are largely free to choose the subjects they wish to concentrate on, they can opt to focus on different areas within and between fields, in line with the career they’re aiming for.
