COACH PITCH RULES
The FABA Coach Pitch rules are a little different from tee ball and include some important
differences from upper level play. Understanding the rules will help you to adjust to this new level
of competition.
I. League Description
A. The Coach Pitch level is intended to take the basic skills learned in tee ball and apply
them to a more structured game setting. The following new skills should be taught at
this level.
1. Understanding of each position on the playing field and a general knowledge
of the responsibilities of each position.
2. This is an instructional league and players should be allowed to try a variety
of positions.
II. Game Play
A. Games will be played on a field with bases set up at 60' and the pitching rubber at 46'
from home plate.
B. A game will consist of six (6) innings. No inning may start after 1 hour and 45 minutes
from the start of the game.
C. A game will be considered complete after four (4) innings, or 3 1/2 if he home team is
leading. Any game suspended for weather or darkness before its completion will be
continued from the point of stoppage.
D. The maximum number of runs per team per inning is five (5). No continuation of play.
Only the 6th inning is the amount of runs unlimited.
E. A ten (10) run mercy rule will be in effect after the losing team has batted in the 5th
inning.
F. All games must be completed by a reasonable time for the participating children's
ages. During nights followed directly by a school day, the curfew will be 9:00pm.
During nights not followed by a school day or after school has adjourned for the
summer, the curfew will be 10:30pm.
G. Scores and standings will be kept. Statistics can be kept at the coaches discretion,
but will not be posted.
III. Pitching
A. During the game the coach from the batting team will pitch the entire inning.
B. Coaches must pitch overhand and from the mound.
C. There will be a six (6) pitch limit. If the sixth pitch is fouled off, the batter will receive
additional pitches until the result is not a foul ball. If the batter is unsuccessful in
putting the ball into play after six (6) pitches, he is automatically out.
D. A batter cannot be walked or called out on strikes (looking).
IV. Fielding
A. Teams will play ten (10) players defensively with four outfielders. No short fielder will
be allowed.
B. Whenever a coach is pitching, a player will be placed on either side of the mound for
defensive purposes. A coach may only field the ball in self defense.
C. All players must play three (3) innings defensively in a six inning game or two (2)
innings in a shortened game. Teams that do not comply with this rule will be subject
to penalties up to and including forfeiture of the game and/or suspension of the coach
for the next game.
V. Batting
5
A. Teams will bat their entire roster. If a player cannot continue to play for any reason,
that team will not be penalized for that place in the lineup.

must return to his original position and the pitch will be declared no pitch. There will
be one team warning per game. Each subsequent violation will result in the runner
being called out.
B. Runners must slide to avoid contact. Any flagrant contact will result in ejection of the
player.
C. No head first slides, except when returning to a bag. Violators will be called out.
D. If a ball is thrown past a base defender during an attempted put out at a base, the
base runner has the option to try for (only) one base at his own risk. Once the runner
either reaches the second attempted base safely or is put out by a defender, the play
is then over and no runner may advance further.
VII. Sportsmanship
A. Umpires are volunteers but should be treated with the same respect as paid
professional umpires. The decision of the umpire is final. No protests will be allowed.

possible a team should call up from their affiliated team. If one does not exist you
may call from any at-large team.

not approach the player or their parents directly.
C. Players should not be called up more than three times in a season in order to give as

NATIONAL LEAGUE RULES
The FABA National League rules are a little different than those we had in the American League.
We will be introducing some new concepts and components to the game. I have included the
main topics of the rules for this level below:
I. League Description
A. National League takes the skills learned in American League and further develops
them through various game situations. The following new skills should be taught at this
level.
1. Bunting. Players should learn the proper techniques for bunting and how it can
be used as an effective strategy during a game.
2. Stealing. Not just from the runner standpoint but also what the catcher needs
to do and how to cover a base when a runner is stealing.
3. Infield Fly Rule. What it is and what each player’s responsibility is when it
occurs.
II. Game Play
During
nights not followed by a school day or after school has adjourned for the summer, the
curfew will be 10:30pm.
G. Scores and standings will be kept.
III. Pitching
A. Players may pitch up to two (2) innings per game. One pitch constitutes an inning
pitched.
B. Players may not pitch more than a total of five (5) innings over a period of seven
consecutive days. Pitching in a tournament does not count toward the above rule;
however coaches should use good judgment to avoid arm injuries. Tournament coaches
should communicate with in-house coaches.
C. A pitcher who pitches 1 or 2 innings must have one (1) calendar day rest.
IV. Fielding
A. Teams will play nine (9) players defensively.
B. All players must play three (3) innings defensively in a six inning game or two (2)
innings in a shortened game. Teams that do not comply with this rule will be subject to
penalties up to and including forfeiture of the game and/or suspension of the coach for
the next game.
C. Infield fly rule is in effect. This occurs whenever there is runners on first and second or
bases loaded and less than two outs. Ball must be a pop fly in fair territory that an
infielder can make a routing play on. The umpire must call it for it to occur, even if all
situations for it exist.
10
V. Batting
A. Teams will bat their entire roster. If a player cannot continue to play for any reason,
that team will not be penalized for that place in the lineup.
B. Bunting is permitted. However if a batter shows bunt he may not then pull back and
swing. Doing so will result in the batter being called out automatically. No warnings.
C. Players may not throw their bat or helmet. If he does the following will occur.
1. 1st offense - team warning
2. 2nd offense - player is called out
3. 3rd offense - player is ejected from the game
D. No big barrel bats allowed. Bats may not exceed 2 1/4 inches in diameter.
VI. Base Running
A. Runners may not leave the base until after the ball crosses the plate. If this is violated,
the runner must return to his original position and the pitch will be declared no pitch.
There will be one team warning per game. Each subsequent violation will result in the
runner being called out.
B. A runner may come off any distance from a base after the ball crosses the plate. Once
the pitcher has possession of the ball and is within the recognized circle of the mound the
runner must return to his original base. Any taunting of the pitcher, including running back
and forth on the baseline will be considered a delay of game and will result in a team
warning. Each subsequent violation will result in the runner being called out.
C. Each team is only allowed two successful steals home in a single game. A third
attempt, the player will be sent back to third and team issued a warning. A fourth attempt,
the runner will be called out.
D. Runners must slide to avoid contact. Any flagrant contact will result in ejection of the
player.
E. No head first slides, except when returning to a bag. Violators will be called out.
F. A courtesy runner may be used for the catcher with two outs. Runner must be the last
batted out.
VII. Sportsmanship
A. Umpires are paid professional umpires. The decision of the umpire is final. No protests
will be allowed.
B. Coaches will assist the umpire in dealing with unruly fans. Any player, coach or fan
ejected from a game will be suspended from the next game as well.
C. After every game, players and coaches will shake hands with the opposing team and
umpires.
VIII. Call Ups
A. Teams in need of an additional player may call up a player from the American League.
Whenever possible a team should call up from their affiliated team. If one does not exist
you may call from any at large team.
B. Requests should go through the head coach of the team you are requesting from. Do
not approach the player or their parents directly.
C. Players should not be called up more than three times in a season in order to give as
many players the opportunity to play up as possible.
D. Call ups should not bat in the order before any rostered player from that team.
IX. Postseason
A. At the completion of the regular season there will be a playoff tournament for all inhouse teams. Seeding will be based on the number of teams participating.
B. Playoff games will be six (6) innings with no time limit.
C. the Game Play rules described in Section II. C.-F. above will apply to all playoff games
as well.
