The promising 21-yearold’s first match since Round 20 last year was cut short after a brutal collision with teammate Chad Wingard, also causing bleeding in his lung and leaving him unable to fly home to Adelaide. Given Pittard felt ‘‘like I was hit by a train’’, it’s perhaps fitting he will enjoy first-class seats on a two-day scenic train tour from today while contemplating another stint on the sidelines. ‘‘All I remember was going up (for the ball) and I didn’t see Chad coming at me,’’ Pittard said from his hospital bed in Darwin yesterday. ‘‘It was a pretty courageous thing he (Wingard) did, I thought — I was just the one that copped it. You would never want him to change the way he attacks the ball. ‘‘Maybe next time I will protect myself a bit more. ‘‘There is one positive thing — we got put up to first class and Dad (Michael) has been able to come with me (after flying up from Torquay in Victoria). I’ve heard it (the train trip) is pretty amazing and it’s probably something I wouldn’t have done if this hadn’t happened.’’ Pittard was accompanied by Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas to the hospital on Saturday night but kept asking for an update on the game, in which Port beat Melbourne by 28 points.
