EVALUATING ONLINE UNITS OF WORK
Session Abstract:
There are several ways units of work can be evaluated. Feedback from students that is easily analysed provides
data for modification of programs, monitoring of student progress and evaluating the outcomes achieved/not
achieved.
Evaluate
According to the NSW BOS Glossary of Key Words (HSC), evaluate is defined as: Make a judgement based
on criteria; determine the value of
What is being evaluated?
1) Student work and progress
 Online tasks where students have direct feedback about their grasp of the topic
 Online tasks where student results are collated so teachers can assess student progress
 Online tasks where parents can check their child’s progress
 Student application and participation by monitoring number of times the student visited the site(s) and
when visited the site(s)
2) Program evaluation
 Direct survey for evaluation
 Analysis of marks gained by students in online tasks to see if students are having difficulty with any
particular area that may need additional attention or an area that has particularly high results and
analysing why the concept was easily grasped
Current examples of Online Assessment
HSC: All my own work
This program uses self-paced learning modules including Quiz questions to allow students to ascertain their
progress.

How are the quizzes to be used?
Each module in the program includes formative quiz items designed to facilitate individual student
learning about ethical scholarship and how it applies to their work. These quiz items are placed at
appropriate places in each module and are designed to be used by students interactively.
A summative quiz that comprises all the quiz items incorporated in the module is provided separately for
each module.. Each summative module quiz can be undertaken and scored online or downloaded and
used in a printed form.
The Quiz page provides all of the module quizzes in both interactive and downloadable format, together
with a set of downloadable quiz answers.
How will schools be able to track student completion of the program?
In order to assist schools in tracking student completion of the program, a function is available in
Schools Online, allowing the school to 'tick' off students who have completed the program.
If a cohort is selected (School Certificate, Preliminary or HSC), all the students' names are displayed
with a check box next to each name. A function allowing 'Check all students' is available, while students
can also be checked off individually. The function also allows schools to select 'Not yet certified' or 'All
students' to view corresponding lists of students.
Where a student has already been certified, the screen will display the calendar year, study year and
school that certified the student. The function incorporates appropriate validation and is available for
schools to update throughout the year. As validation is available on Schools Online, schools can to
check the status of students irrespective of their previous school.
