Aging in Place Article - Henderson Restoration

AGING IN PLACE HOME MODIFICATIONS
Most of us want to live comfortably and independently in our own home for as long as possible.
Economically this makes sense as well. A move to a typical assisted living facility in our area can cost up to
$60,000 annually.
Yet we all know that as we age and face our increasing physical limitations this becomes more difficult for
us. Aging in Place is a relatively new specialty in the Residential Construction, General Contracting, Home
Remodeling, and Handyman industries. The focus is on accessible living by remodeling or installing barrier
free and fall prevention home modifications and products. These are generally a much less expensive
alternative to assisted living and they are a onetime expense.
The affordability of age-in-place remodeling is potentially enhanced by the fact that medically necessary
changes are tax deductible if supported by a letter from our doctor.
These customizable adaptations are designed to assist us in living independently in the comfort, security,
and privacy of our own home and neighborhood. Generally these focus on a few different areas that may
challenge us:



Getting safely and securely into and out of the house
Moving around within the house
Ease of using our bathroom and kitchen
Access and Maneuvering
Ramps and rails to move in and out of the home
can be constructed.
Doorways can be widened and "doors that go
away" can be installed to remove barriers within
the home and provide greater wheelchair or
scooter maneuverability.
Better and more strategically placing lighting inside
and out can help us see what we are doing and
avoid falling.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms can be modified in a variety
of ways:
Installing ADA or raised toilets & grab
bars; building roll-in showers; modifying
existing shower or tub access with cut
down thresholds; lowering towel racks
and shelving, and installing hand held
shower heads.
Bathroom under sink cabinets can be
removed to provide knee spaces while
sitting and sinks, mirrors, and electrical
outlets lowered for ease of use height
adjustments.
Kitchens
Smaller, less expensive modifications include installing lever-handled faucets with pull-out spray, or
installing rolling islands, pull-out cutting boards, and larger drawer pulls.
Installation of cabinet drawer pull outs, removal of under sink and/or overhead cabinets, lowering of
countertops, microwaves, and other built-ins represent larger, yet still cost effective remodeling projects.
Upper cabinet shelving left in place can also be made available with pullouts and hydraulic lifts.
Raised dishwasher and right-height oven modifications as well as drawer appliance installations are also
possible in some homes.
