Gold imports fall
sharply postdemonetisation
NEW DELHI: The Centre's
demonetisation drive is
seemed to have a significant impact on the gold demand in the country as imports of the metal dropped
sharply in December and
January.
Gold imports reduced to
54.1 tonnes in December
and 53.2 tonnes in January
from a high of 119.2 tonnes
in November, the month
during which the government scrapped the old Rs
500/1,000 notes.
The decline in January
is 43 per cent from the gold
imported in the corresponding month in 2016.
The sudden decision to
demonetise the old high
value notes led to a massive cash crunch in the
country impacting demand
for various commodities,
including precious metals.
According to an RBI assessment paper, after demonetisation, the domestic
demand for gold (or gold
items) spiked suddenly,
with "buyers reportedly
willing" to pay huge premiums to dispose of old
currency notes with jewellers.
"Reflecting this development as well as the seasonal jump, the volume of
gold imports surged in November, even above the elevated October level. Gold
imports, however, declined
sharply in December 2016
and January 2017," the paper said.
The RBI said that around
80 per cent of the gems and
jewellery purchases in India are made in cash and
consumer demand was reported to have been impacted due to the cash
shortage.
India is one of the largest gold importers in the
world, and the imports
mainly take care of demand
from the jewellery industry.
In volume terms, the country's total gold imports declined to 546 tonnes in
April-January of this fiscal,
much lower than 892.9
tonnes in the year-ago period.
Total gold imports had
totalled 968 tonnes in 201516. (PTI)
Hiring demand for sales positions
increased in Feb: Survey
NEW DELHI: After three
sluggish months, hiring
gained pace in February
with demand increasing for
freshers in sales teams
across consumer durables
and FMCG sectors, says a
survey.
According to TimesJobs
RecruiteX,
February
brought some relief to the
job market with sales professionals in FMCG and consumer durables witnessed
an eight per cent rise in demand.
Job creation growth,
ICICI Bank,
SBI record most
number of fraud
NEW DELHI: ICICI Bank
topped the list of banks that
witnessed most number of
frauds during April-December period of 2016 with
state-owned SBI taking the
second spot, RBI data said.
During the first nine months
of the current fiscal, as many
as 455 fraud cases involving Rs 1 lakh and above
were detected in ICICI Bank,
closely followed by SBI
(429), Standard Chartered
(244) and HDFC Bank (237).
The other banks which reported large number of
frauds during the period include Axis Bank (189), Bank
of Baroda (176) and Citibank
(150). However, in value
terms, frauds involving Rs
2,236.81 crore were reported
in SBI, followed by PNB (Rs
2,250.34 crore) and Axis
Bank (Rs 1,998.49 crore).
(PTI)
both in volume and value
terms, is being driven
mainly by tier-II cities as
consumer demand increased significantly owing
to a rising disposable income.
Businesses are expanding operations and moving
into new geographies, leading to a rise in demand for
fresh talent in non-metros,
Times Business Solutions
Head of Strategy Nilanjan
Roy said, adding, "in addition, with the Union Budget’s focus on increasing con-
sumers’ buying power,
FMCG and consumer durables are increasing their
sales teams, gearing up to
service this growing demand, in February 2017".
The
TimesJobs
RecruiteX noted that consumer durables/FMCG industry posted an 8 per cent
rise in hiring activity in February 2017. Retail sector also
saw a 7 per cent rise, construction sector posted a 6
per cent jump, while the
manufacturing industry reported a 4 per cent rise in
talent demand during the
month.
The demand for professionals with less than 2 years
of experience reported a rise
of 4 per cent during February 2017, while professionals with 5-10 years of experience witnessed a rise of 1
per cent.
Those with 10-20 years of
experience also saw a 4 per
cent rise in hiring during the
month, while senior professionals with over 20 years
of experience saw a 17 per
cent drop in demand. (PTI)
Expect India to be 3rd biggest
car market by 2020: Suzuki
GENEVA: Suzuki Motor
Corporation (SMC) expects
India to grow into the thirdbiggest car market in the
world by 2020 and is "determined" to play a big part
in that growth.
The company, whose
arm Maruti Suzuki India
commands nearly 50 per
cent of the passenger vehicle market in the country,
has already started operations at its new plant in
Gujarat as part of the plan
to raise its total production
to 2 million units by 2020.
"India is expected to
grow into the third-biggest
car market in the world by
2020 and we are determined
to play a big part in that
growth," said Kinji Saito,
Executive General Manager
and Managing Officer (Glo-
bal Automotive Operations), Suzuki Motor Corporation, at the Geneva Motor
Show here.
He said that in India,
Suzuki has been the market
leader for decades, with
nearly 50 per cent share.
The company plans to
introduce more new products in India even as it gears
up to meet additional demand by increasing its production capacity.
"In fact, we started operations at a new plant last
month on the way to increasing our total capacity
in India to two million units,"
Saito added.
The Gujarat plant is envisaged to have an installed
capacity of 7.5 lakh units
annually.
MSI's two units at
Gurugram, earlier known as
Gurgaon, and Manesar
have a total production capacity of 1.5 million units annually.
Maruti Suzuki India
(MSI) is accelerating product introductions with an
eye to strengthen its hold
in the Indian market. As part
of its 2020 target, the company had earlier said it
would bring in 15 models by
then.
In the next fiscal, MSI
plans to introduce four new
products. It has has been
bringing about two new
products each year in the
past couple of years.
In April to February this
fiscal, MSI has sold around
13 lakh units. Globally, SMC
sold 2.9 million units 2016,
Saito said. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu thump Gujarat
to enter Vijay Hazare semis
NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu defeated defending champions Gujarat by five wickets in the quarter-finals of the
Vijay Hazare 50-overs domestic cricket tournament at
the Palam Ground here on Sunday. Defending champions Gujarat needed a gutsy performance from middleorder batsman Rujul Bhatt (83 not out) to tally 211 as the
western outfit failed to put up a strong partnership. Samit
Gohel (39) was the second highest scorer for Gujarat, as
reliable batsmen Priyank Krit Panchal (14), Bharghav
Merai (7) and Chiragh Gandhi (3) had a bad day. With
Vijay Shankar (3-45), Rahil Shah (2-34) and R. Sai Kishore
(2-35) picking wickets regularly, the Gujarat inning was
wrapped up for 211 in 49.4 overs. In reply, Tamil Nadu
were driven by V. Ganga Sridhar Raju's 85 to overhaul
the target with five wickets and 7.4 overs to spare. (IANS)

LONDON: Arsenal ended
Lincoln City's historic FA
Cup run and eased the pressure on Arsene Wenger with
a 5-0 victory over the valiant non-league side in Saturday's quarter-finals.
After Tuesday's humiliating Champions League
exit against Bayern Munich,
Wenger had endured calls
for his resignation and the
Gunners boss must have
breathed a sigh of relief as
Arsenal avoided even
greater ignominy.
A contest that should
have been a mismatch

opponents was actually a
tense affair until first-half
stoppage time when Theo
Walcott put Arsenal ahead.
But even after goals
from Olivier Giroud, Alexis
Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey
and a Luke Waterfall own
goal, the day belonged to
the fifth-tier leaders, for
whom the competition has
generated a £1.6 million
($1.9m) cash windfall.
For a club whose record
signings, Dean Walling and
Tony Battersby, each cost
£75,000 in 1997 and 1978, respectively, that is quite a
sum.
The 9,000 travelling Lincoln supporters certainly
brought their voices and
generated
more noise
than the Emirates Stadium
has heard during many Premier League games this season.
Almost 10 minutes had
elapsed before Arsenal created an opening. Hector
Bellerin slid the ball along
the ground from the righthand side but Ramsey
swept his shot just wide of
the post.
Four minutes later Walcott connected sweetly
with a volley only for Lincoln keeper Paul Farman to
plunge to his left to palm
the ball on to the same upright.
Arsenal were forced into
a change after 26 minutes,
although if the non-league
side were glad to see Alex
Oxlade-Chamberlain go, the
sight of German World Cupwinner Mesut Ozil coming
on to replace him was less
welcome.
Lincoln's
compactness
in defence was
limiting Arsenal to very few
chances. Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in
the FA Cup semi-finals but
an injury to Harry Kane
marred the party as they
marked their last tie at their
White Hart Lane home with
a 6-0 thrashing of third-tier
London rivals Millwall on
Sunday.
England international
Kane, the Premier League's
FA Cup
joint top scorer, had to hobble off after falling awkwardly and suffering an ankle injury in a sixth minute
challenge during their sixth
round tie.
Yet his absence was not
missed on the day as Son
Heung-min hammered a
brilliant hat-trick and
Kane's replacement Christian Eriksen also scored a
beauty before Dele Alli and
substitute Vincent Janssen
got in on the act.
It all made for an emotional occasion at Spurs'
storied
118-year-old
ground which they will
leave at the end of the season.
Third-tier side Millwall
had beaten three top-flight
teams en route to the sixth
round but Premier League
title chasers Spurs dominated them from the outset
at the grand old ground
where they have not lost all
season. (AFP)
Goa prevail over M’laya
in Santosh Trophy
GOA: Goa began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over
Meghalaya at Bambolim.
All three goals came in a
four-minute spell of attacking display from both sides
in the second half. Latesh
Mandrekar broke the deadlock four minutes into the
second session and Liston
Colaco doubled the advantage two minutes later.
Enestar
Malngiang
scored from a free-kick in the
53rd minutes to pull one
back for the Northeastern
team.
Meanwhile, a late goal by
substitute S K Faiaz guided
West Bengal to a solitary
goal win over Chandigarh in
the opening match of the
71st Santosh Trophy football tournament on Sunday.
The all-important goal
was scored in the 90th
minute when Sannik Murmu
split the defence with a
through pass to substitute
Faiaz who raced down and
after entering the box beat
the rival keeper Harptritpal
Singh with a low shot to the
far corner of the net.
Play was confined to midfield for most part of the
match which saw few goalbound moves.
West Bengal, who had
better ball possession in the
first half, looked more
thrustful in their attack and
had the first chance to take
the lead but Moirangthem
Basanta directed the ball
straight to rival keeper Harpritpal Singh in the 15th
minute. (PTI)

added. The biscuit industry have sought exemption in the
proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime for lowpriced glucose and other varieties. The inclusion of lowpriced glucose, milk and marie biscuits in GST will lead to
shutting down of about 240 biscuit factories, warn manufacturers.
Low-cost biscuits which at present account for 40 per
cent of total sales may fall down to 20-25 per cent if they
are taxed under GST. Biscuit manufacturers, however, are
in consensus that the government can levy high tax of
even up to 18 per cent on higher priced biscuits. (PTI)

‘Biscuit industry yet to recover from note ban impact’
NEW DELHI: The biscuit industry in the country has taken
a hit of up to Rs 700 crore and rural sales continue to suffer
after the government scrapped old high value notes. "Due
to cash crunch, there was a significant impact on the
biscuits industry.
The industry took hit of Rs 500-700 crore on sales due
to demonetisation," Mayank Shah, vice president, Biscuit
Manufacturers Welfare Association, told PTI.
Shah said that while urban sales have recovered, rural
sales continue to remain under pressure. "We expect rural
sales to come to normal levels in 1-2 months time," he

DUNEDIN: Rain played
spoilsport as the first cricket
Test between South Africa
and New Zealand ended in
a draw at the University
Oval here on Sunday.
The umpires waited till
the end of the scheduled
lunch break on the fifth and
final day before announcing that no play would be
possible, according to the
International
Cricket
Council's (ICC) website.
Earlier, on Saturday,
South Africa scored 224/6 in
the second innings, taking
their lead to 191 with Faf du
Plessis still batting on 56 and
Vernon Philander on one.
South Africa scored 308
in their first innings, to
which New Zealand replied
with 341. "When a Test
match finishes on a day like
today, it's very frustrating.
If today was a full day of
cricket, we felt with (New

rematch of last year’s final,
which Smit won 2-0.
Both clubs went all out
for the win seeking to get a
chance to vie for the coveted cup and Smit could feel
unlucky that none of their
attempts on goal came off.
Two examples of these
came in the 75th minute when
W Nongkhlaw hit the upright and, in a follow-up
manoeuvre, saw Lawsohtun
goalie B Sten pull off a terrific leap to put his shot out.
Sten had a fantastic day
under the bar, pulling off at
least six saves to ensure his
team came through victorious.
In the other match of the
day, tournament lead scorer
Mani Chetry recorded a
brace while his team mate LR
Zuala produced one goal on
the way to Assam Rifles’
victory.
Though the scoreline
was rather one-sided, the
result belied the fierce fight
put up by Eastern Pirates;
Assam Rifles only claimed
their second and third goals
right at the end of the match.
The jawans looked a little more likely to score in the
opening few minutes, although the Pirates did have
at least two shots on target
in the same amount of time,
even if these were not so
threatening.
The opening goal came
in the 22nd minute, though it
could be traced to events a
few moments earlier. In the
Assam Rifles Invitational Football Cup
19 th Anil Singh’s attempt
struck the crossbar and
went out, but while moving
to try and block the ball,
Eastern Pirates’ goalkeeper
W Kharsati had a heavy
collision with the upright
and required medical attention.
The resulting goal kick
was taken by a defender,
who passed it around before
the ball was finally kicked
towards Kharsati. Perhaps
still a little dazed from his
recent collision, Kharsati
effected an ineffectual pass,
which was intercepted by
the lurking Assam Rifles
players and it was Chetry
who finished things off with
the goal.
Kharsati, however, made
up for this with two fine
saves in the following few
minutes and the halftime
score ended 1-0 in favour of
Assam Rifles.
The start of the second
session saw Eastern Pirates
with more of the ball and
they made more attacking
moves forward, but they
could not quite get the better of the jawans’ defence.
Almost against the run of
play, Chetry doubled his
team’s lead after receiving a
long ball on the left flank
and guiding it past the opposition custodian in the
90 th minute for his eighth
goal of the competition. Despite this setback five minutes of stoppage time gave
Eastern Pirates some hope,
but this was ended two minutes in after Zuala put the
ball in to make it 3-0.
Lawsohtun and Assam
Rifles will now receive a
day’s welcome break before
heading to the final on
Tuesday at the Jawaharlal
Nehru Stadium in what
promises to be an eagerly
contested clash.
Murray toppled Golf workshop held in Sohra
by qualifier
Vasek Pospisil
INDIAN WELLS: World
number one Andy Murray
crashed out of the ATP Indian Wells Masters, sent
spinning in straight sets by
Canadian qualifier Vasek
Pospisil.
Pospisil, ranked 129th in
the world, triumphed 6-4, 76 (7/5), sealing the biggest
win of his career on his
fourth match point to the
delight a stadium court
crowd won over by the underdog's aggressive serveand-volley style.
For Britain's Murray, it
was yet another disappointing performance in the
California desert, where his
best showing is a 2009 runner-up finish to Rafael
Nadal.
Last year Murray was
bundled out in the third
round, but he was hoping
for much better as he arrived fresh off his 45th ca-
reer ATP title in Dubai.
"I don't know exactly
why it is, because in practice here normally I play
pretty well," Murray said.
"And then some years I
played well. Some years it
just hasn't quite happened
for me. I don't know exactly
why that is."
Murray was particularly
disappointed to have
dropped the first set after
twice going up a break.
But he hurt his own
cause with seven doublefaults, part of a poor serving night that he said was
key to the defeat. Pospisil
had never beaten Murray
in four prior encounters.
The 26-year-old, who defeatedLu Yen-Hsun in the
first round as Murray enjoyed a bye, notched his
fourth career victory over a
top-10 player and his first
since 2014. (AFP)
Young golf enthusiasts take part in the golf workshop for beginners organised
by the promoters of Sohra Golf Range on Saturday.
SHILLONG: The Sohra
Golf Range at Kutmadan,
Sohra adjoining the Jiva
Resort is becoming a favourite weekend destination for those with interest
to learn Golf under professionals who were trained
abroad.
The Warjri bothers, Lam
and Kitri (the latter teaches
Golf in Thailand and flies in
frequently to help his
brother) teach the techniques of golfing such as
correct posture while hit-
ting the ball and several
other lessons that makes a
person a professional
golfer. On Saturday last, the
promoters of Sohra Golf
Range designed for amateur
golfers, in collaboration
with Jiva Resorts organised
a workshop on golfing for
beginners.
However, even regular
golfers enjoyed teeing on
this range, Lam Warjri informed.

Meghalaya and is aimed at

Jiva Resort next door. It will

that it would soon be formally launched after which
regular lessons/workshops
will be held and also golf
