PS10 – Objectives 3.3-3.5 Problem Solving Practice Directions: Create a let statement and write and solve an algebraic equation. Show all your work in your orange notebook. Example: Erika is following a 2,200 calorie-per-day diet. She eats the recommended 9 serving of breads and cereals, averaging 120 calories per serving. She also eats 5 servings of vegetables. If the rest of her daily intake is 870 calories, what is the average number of calories in each serving of vegetables? Let c = the average number of calories in each serving of vegetables 9(120) + 5c + 870 = 2200 1080 + 5c + 870 = 2200 1950 + 5c = 2200 1950 – 1950 + 5c = 2200 – 1950 5c = 250 5c ÷ 5 = 250 ÷ 5 c = 50 Each serving of vegetables averages about 50 calories. Solve these problems using the same format. Show all your work clearly. 1. An electrician charges $50 to come to your house. He also charges $25 for each hour he spends at your house. The electrician charges you a total of $125. How many hours did he spend at your house? 2. Two years of local Internet service costs $685, including the installation fee of $85. What is the monthly fee? 3. Jose ran twice as many kilometers as Karen. Adding 8 to the number of kilometers Jose ran and dividing by 4 gives the number of kilometers Maria ran. Maria ran 3 kilometers. How many kilometers did Karen run? 4. Faith spent $78 at Fashion Warehouse. She bought 2 shirts that each cost $17.50 and a pair of shoes. How much did she spend for the shoes? 5. Betty is a nurse who likes to work overtime. She earns 1.5 times her normal hourly pay for each hour that she works over 40 hours in a week. Last week she worked 53 hours and earned $2082.50. What is her normal hourly pay? 6. Members of the Campus Roller Rink pay a yearly membership fee of $50 plus $5 each time they go skating. Nonmembers pay $10 each time they go skating. How many times would both a member and a nonmember have to go skating in a year in order to pay the same amount? 7. Five added to twice Erik’s age is the same as 3 times his age minus 2. How old is Erik? 8. Three times the perimeter of a triangle is the same as 75 decreased by twice the perimeter. What is the perimeter of the triangle?
