Tutor summative feedback for learner
(Note to tutors: this section should focus on what the learner has done well. Where a learner has not achieved a
specific performance criterion or is likely to want to improve on a response to a performance criterion, then you may
identify the issues related to the criterion, but should not provide explicit instructions on how the learner can improve
their work to achieve the outstanding criteria.)

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF
Within this assignment you will work in a group to create a shippable game. Before any games can be
developed, each learner will pitch their ideas for a game. The chosen game will be developed by the group
throughout the rest of the unit.
Each learner will take a role within the team based on a skills audit and application for a chosen role
following the submission of a Curriculum Vitae (CV). Once the roles are assigned development can begin
and will be phased to include two Q & A sessions.
All development contributions will be recorded in a development journal in a weekly entry (roughly 1 page).
TASK OVERVIEW
Games are developed by teams of talented developers each with their own skills and abilities. In smaller
studios (which you are going to be mimicking), the development team all take responsibility for
management and testing duties ensuring all members of the team have the same investment in the
product.
Task 1: PO1 Develop and present a game idea pitch
In this task you will develop your own game ideas into a game idea pitch presentation. You must
demonstrate your understanding of game scope, the games industry and target audiences.
You must:
a) Produce (P1) and present (P2) a game idea pitch to the team. This should take the form of a 10
minute (maximum) oral presentation with appropriate use of presentation materials such as slides,
images, videos and prototype builds
b) Enhance your pitch with the use of competitor analysis using existing games (M1) and audience
research to identify a core demographic and potential market (M2).
c) To further enhance your game idea pitch, produce a quick, rough prototype to show your ideas.
Task 2: PO2 Demonstrate an understanding of the key aspects of a chosen
role within a games development team
In this task you choose your desired role for the development of the chosen game and apply for that role by
creating a CV. Once you have your role you will be able to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP)
which you will act upon throughout the development of the project. You must demonstrate an
understanding of the job roles within games development and how they work together in a development
team.
You must:
a) Complete a skills audit to determine a preferred role. You should include a breakdown of the general
responsibilities and expectations of that role (P3).
b) Produce a CV including a cover letter identifying your strengths and weaknesses, highlighting where
improvement can be made to fit better into your preferred role (P4) and include a brief discussion of
how you believe your chosen role will fit into the makeup of the development team for the project (P5).
c) Produce a personal development plan (PDP) which will allow for skills development during the project
(M3).
d) To complete the task you should act upon the PDP showing skill development throughout the course of
the games development (D2).
Task 3: PO3 Develop an asset production/task list for chosen role
In this task you engage in the pre-production phase of the games development to produce a prioritised task
lists for the project.
You must:
a) Produce a task list identifying development tasks for your job role (P6).
b) Prioritise your task list to ensure final game is of the highest standard possible (P7).
c) Use planning tools such as Trello to track development and completion of tasks (P8).
d) Add contingency plans to your task list based on possible problems which could arise. (M4)
Task 4: PO4 Work as part of a team to develop a shippable game
In this task you will use the bulk of the unit to develop the game project.
You must:
a) Work within your job role to develop assets for a complete, shippable game (P9).
b) Implement your assets into the game (P10).
c) Post weekly in the development journal to show your developments and contributions (P11) including
videos, images, screenshots etc.
d) Partake in two phases of QA testing of the game, completing bug reports and fixing any bugs found in
your work (P12).
e) Evaluate the success of the development team, agreeing ways of improving collaborative work in the
future (P13).
f)
Reflect upon your overall contributions to the development of the team (M5) and critically analyse the
final game, comparing it to the pitch including suitability for target demographic and comparing it to
other similar games (M6).
g) Critically analyse your assets produced during the development of the game and produce a new PDP
(D3).
