Bring Your Team Together to Create Impact
Understanding the
Challenge
Regional and national initiatives to transform care delivery are
accelerating. Faced with skyrocketing costs and a rapidly changing
population, health care executives will increasingly be charged with
forging the path forward from a post-World War II health system to one
that reflects 21st century technology, expectations and needs. From
changing payment models, to new models of care, it’s not a question of
if care will transform but how it will transform.
This executive retreat will provide a platform for learning how best to
leverage the uncertainty, disruption, and upheaval within healthcare
today in order to imagine, design, and offer next generation healthcare
services.
A New Kind of
Strategic Planning
When planning future strategy, we see three areas of focus that drive
efforts: operational strategy, market strategy and transformational
strategy:
•
Operational Strategy: Planning to enhance organisational
performance by assessing strengths and gaps.
•
Market Strategy: Planning for local environmental pressures such as
the competitive landscape or governmental changes.
•
Transformational Strategy: Planning towards an endpoint that is
often uncertain and frequently evolving.
Most strategic planning efforts focus on the first two types of planning:
Assessing internal operational needs or creating a local market strategy.
This retreat focuses on transformational strategy. It builds on the idea
that the health care world is changing rapidly, and we are often working
towards endpoints that are changing and uncertain. True transformation
requires complex discussion and a willingness to think about how we
fundamentally may need to change what and who we are as
organisations. The goal of the retreat will be to jumpstart or advance
transformational discussions at your organisation.
Writing the Storyline
of the Future

This session is built on a double pronged structure of both learning and
planning. First, education and instruction focused on key current trends
in health care and critical skill sets that must be mastered in order to
guide a health system forward. Then, facilitated discussions and
exercises using proprietary retreat technology will help senior leaders
build a cohesive care transformation aim and prioritise actionable
opportunities.

Retreat Agenda
08:30
Welcome and Introduction
Group introductions and kickoff from retreat sponsor (e.g. hospital chief
executive) about the day’s aim and importance.

Disruptor or Disrupted: The Tectonic Shifts in Health Care Today
Presentation on the five major forces impacting health care’s future strategy:
the ageing and chronically ill population, a declining workforce, the rise of
expensive technology – both clinical and IT – and the continued need to cater
to the consumer. In response, some policy makers are urging hospitals to
look beyond their walls. This research presentation will offer insight into these
critical disruptions and introduce the conflicting aims of transformational
strategy.
10:30
The Transformation Paradox: Overcoming Singular and Simple Strategy
Multi-part workshop to understand the organisational opportunity for a twopronged transformation: better engaging consumers for improved individual
health and improving population management to right-size society health spend.
The workshop is driven by our proprietary retreat technology and group insight
and analysis. Pre- and post-lunch working sessions will work towards a path to
action.
15:30
Envisioning the Transformation at Large
Closing presentation on the leadership necessary to create a compelling
narrative for transformation that will inspire and engage system change across
all levels.

Meet Our Facilitators
Mike Wagner, Executive Director
The retreat really exceeded my expectations
in that it was singularly successful in bringing
a large group of our managers together and
prioritising some of our key objectives so that
we have an agreed way forward. The
workshop was highly engaging and had the
perfect balance of high-level overview of the
challenges in our environment, and practical
planning to evaluate which of our many areas
of focus most need our attention.
More than 20 years with the
Advisory Board leading research
and conducting workshops for more
than 750 health care organisations

leadership curriculum planning,

transformation
Bec Richmond, Senior Director

I also greatly appreciate this follow up and the
offer of additional advice and support, and it’s
good to know we are not alone with some of
the issues we face.

Logistics
Making the Most of the Retreat
Scheduling & Availability
Retreat capacity is limited and
therefore advance scheduling is
recommended. Please contact
your dedicated advisor for regional
availability and scheduling.
Attendance
To allow for maximum discussion,
participation is recommended for
the most senior executives and
managers at the organisation.
Ideal size and makeup is 16-24
individuals with a mix of roles and
expertise (e.g. senior executives,
board of directors, senior
managers).
The Global Forum Care Transformation Strategy
Retreat is designed to allow the executive team to
engage and debate across complex strategic risks and
decisions. For optimum participation, we recommend
scheduling 3-6 months in advance.
Following the retreat your dedicated advisor will
provide you with our most-salient and newsworthy
research that maps to identified opportunities and
action plans.
Retreat Pre-Work
To facilitate discussion and insight generation across
the group, the retreat uses a proprietary survey and
analysis tool to create organisation-specific data
reports.
Location
The retreat is designed for Global
Forum members and therefore
may be held at a member site or
an offsite location of their
choosing; however, any offsite
costs are the responsibility of the
member.
Confirmation & Planning
Once a date is confirmed, all
logistics will be coordinated
through a presite call held 8 weeks
prior to selected date.
Data inputs will be required across two fronts: a brief
background questionnaire about the organisation’s
profile and survey responses for each participant.
Following the pre-retreat scoping call, the Advisory
Board will send the required data requests to the
retreat sponsor and participants (6-8 weeks in advance
of the retreat). Accompanying the survey will be a
packet of optional pre-reading the organisation may
review.
