1st Annual PYB Super 16 Middle School Basketball Tournament

1st Annual PYB Super 16 Middle School
Basketball Tournament and
Foul Shot-A-Thon
Who is PYB?
We are a non-profit organization built around empowering young people in
and around Philadelphia through the iconic game of basketball, contextually
relevant academic enrichment, health and wellness education, and positive
coaching and mentorship. Our mission is to leverage the values of the game of
basketball to create opportunities for young people in the Philadelphia region,
especially those from under-resourced communities, in order to develop their
potential as students, athletes, and responsible and engaged citizens. Through
our partnership with Temple University, four neighboring public schools, and
other synergistic entities, this fall we will implement year two of our Middle
School Partnership Program, an after-school program, which will serve 80
girls and 80 boys in the classroom and on the basketball court. Additionally,
this past summer we launched our inaugural Collegiate Summer Camp Series,
five week-long summer camps hosted on various universities throughout the
city. The camps blend basketball skills and drills, gameplay, academics, and
nutrition. These programs embody opportunities that will be available at our
center in the coming years. We are in the process of building a professional
organization and fundraising effort to construct a $25 million state-of-the-art,
basketball-based youth development center in the heart of North Philadelphia.
We believe that community involvement is essential to our mission.
The Tournament
On Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of 2017 (January 14th – 16th), PYB will hold
two 16-team tournaments (one boys and one girls) on the campus of
Germantown Friends School, located in the historic Germantown
neighborhood of Philadelphia. The tournaments will feature four pools of four
teams, with each pool comprised of one independent school, one Catholic
school, one Philadelphia public school, and one suburban public school. Each
team is guaranteed 3 games in their pool. The teams that win their pools will
advance to the semi-finals and eventually a championship game where the
“Greater Philadelphia Champion” will be crowned.
The Foul Shot-A-Thon
Teams will hold this event prior to the tournament. Participants will gather
sponsors to pledge a certain dollar amount ($.50 per made shot up to $50 per
made shot) for each respective player. This pledge signifies the amount that
the sponsor is agreeing to donate to PYB based upon their player’s shots made
out of either 50 or 100 free throws, depending upon the format of the event.
PYB will provide materials to assist the participants in explaining the mission
and programs of PYB.
All proceeds from the event will go toward building our state-of-the-art youth
basketball and education center in North Philadelphia. Each team/school
must raise a minimum of $500 in order to play in the tournament. A
commemorative engraved brick will be given to the teams/schools based upon
fundraising contribution of $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000. One brick will be
embedded in our center’s walkway and a second brick will be given to the
team/school.
$1,000 – a small brick with group name
$2,500 – a medium-sized brick with the name of the group and 2 lead
organizers
$5,000 - a slate brick with the name of the group and up to 8 individual names
or a message.
Captain and Coach Leadership Opportunity
We will host a dinner in early December for all of the coaches and captains of
the participating teams (if teams do not have a captain, then perhaps the coach
can appoint one of the returning 8th graders that exhibits qualities of
leadership). The dinner will provide an opportunity for the coaches and
captains to socialize and share some ideas they have about fundraising. It will
empower the captains to lead more effectively and recognize their potential to
grow as students, leaders, and athletes. Additionally, we will provide more
information about the tournament (site, sponsors, etc.) and how teams can
best run their Foul Shot-A-Thon.
Participation Fee
To participate in the Super 16 Tournament, teams will be required to pay a
minimum fee of $500. This fee can be paid out of the proceeds of the foul
shot-a-thon, by the school, or some hybrid of the two. Participating teams will
be provided a minimum of three games, a captains and coaches dinner, tshirts, a commemorative brick (based on contribution level).
The Goal
It is our hope that through the tournament and Foul-Shot-A-Thon we are able
to:
a) Educate the various teams and communities about PYB and its mission;
b) Empower not only the captains but every player to become a leader in
their school, community, and PYB for the upcoming years;
c) Unite the Greater Philadelphia middle school basketball community;
d) Allow players to interact with and compete against players from other
leagues and neighborhoods that they would not otherwise;
e) Involve numerous neighborhoods and people throughout the region in
our fundraising efforts; and
f) Create a memorable, enriching, and fun experience for young athletes
throughout the area
Along with the minimum of 3 games, every player and coach will receive a
tournament t-shirt, as well as a jersey with the participant’s respective school
name on it.
We are building an organization that will have unprecedented value and will
help shape the future leaders of our city. This is an amazing opportunity for
your school to make a mark on PYB. Don’t miss out on your chance to be in the
