Giving Campaign External Match Guidelines

Giving Campaign
External Match Guidelines
Our Giving Campaign vendor, Benevity, offers UnitedHealth Group the ability to match donations
employees make outside of the giving site. Through External Match, employees can submit matching
fund requests at any time for donations they make directly to match eligible charitable organizations.
To receive matching funds, employees must submit proof of the donation (i.e. receipt) on the giving
site at giving.uhg.com.
UnitedHealth Group will accept matching requests for donations made directly to match eligible
organizations any time in a calendar year.
The Giving Campaign External Match functionality maximizes the benefit to nonprofits and the
community by leveraging both employee and company resources.
For a matching gift to be awarded, the application guidelines outlined below must be followed.

1. Who is eligible to participate?
All full-time and part-time employees of UnitedHealth Group are eligible to participate. In addition,
all employees on leave of absence are eligible to participate.
2. How often can I apply?
The External Match fiscal year is the calendar year, January 1 through December 31. Eligible
employees are allowed multiple matching gift requests per calendar year. An employee must make
an individual donation to a qualifying match eligible nonprofit and submit a match request on the
giving site at giving.uhg.com.

3. What types of gifts are eligible/ineligible through the Giving Campaign External Match
process?
Eligible Gifts

Individual donations actually made, not merely pledged, by cash, check, credit card, or in
securities. (The value of a gift in securities will be the closing price on the date of transfer.)
Ineligible Gifts



Contributions already being matched as part of the annual Giving Campaign (i.e. gifts made
through the giving site to match eligible organizations).
Dues, subscription fees or other gifts that are not made as a direct contribution to an
eligible nonprofit organization.
Gifts for which the donor receives goods, services or benefits in return for their own donation.
Only the tax-deductible portion of the donation will be matched.
4. What organizations are eligible?
To be eligible for an External Match on an employee's behalf the organization must be:

In the U.S. – Donations to one of the more than 20,000 charitable organizations that are
members of our nine Giving Partners are matched dollar-for-dollar through the Giving
Campaign.

In Australia, Canada, Ireland and the U.K. – Donations to registered charities in these
countries are matched through the Giving Campaign.

In all other countries – Donations to one of the more than 20,000 charitable organizations
that are members of our nine Giving Partners are matched through the Giving Campaign. At
this time organizations must be U.S.-based, but may serve needs worldwide.
5. How can I find out if the organization I donated to is eligible for an External Match?
Search for the organization on the giving website at giving.uhg.com. There is a green "matching
offer" badge identifying if an organization has an applicable matching offer. When you are viewing
a specific organization profile, the details for any relevant matching offer will be listed in the
information bar located on the right side of the screen.
6. Can I submit one External Match request for multiple donations to the same organization?
An employee can make multiple donations to an organization and request an External Match for
their total amount of giving if they receive one receipt from the organization for their total gift
amount. If an employee receives multiple receipts, they will need to submit an External Match
request for reach receipted donation.
7. Are my gifts cumulative from year to year? If I don’t utilize the program this year, will I be
able to use those dollars toward a matching gift next year?
No. The Giving Campaign External Match fiscal year is the calendar year, January 1 through
December 31. Each fiscal year, your eligible matching gift amounts will begin again.

8. How do I submit a request?
NOTE: If you make your donation to a match eligible nonprofit through the giving site at
giving.uhg.com, you do NOT need to complete the External Match process as the match will
occur automatically.
Step 1: Make your individual tax-deductible donation(s) directly to a match eligible nonprofit.
Step 2: Once you receive receipt of your donation from the nonprofit, complete and submit the
online External Match application at giving.uhg.com.
9. What should I expect after I submit my request
After submitting your External Match request, our giving administrator will review the submission
and provide confirmation of approval or request additional information to be able to approve the
request.
10. Is there an External Match application deadline?
Matching gifts are processed monthly as requests are received, throughout the calendar year.
January of the following calendar year will serve as a "grace period" in which requests from the
previous year will still be reviewed for consideration (this allows employees to make contributions at
year-end; however, only requests from a single year will be granted in each calendar year).
External Match requests for the current calendar year must be requested by January 31 of the
following year in order to receive matching funds.
11. Some of our employees are located outside of the U.S. Does this program include
opportunities for them?
