Kingsland Karnival Visitor Survey & Report Phoenix Fest15 and the Kingsland Block Party Saturday 21 March 2015 Date & Time: The Kingsland Karnival Visitor Survey was conducted on respondents 18+ in two time periods: 1. From 3:30pm to 5:30pm for the Phoenix Fest15 event 2. From 8pm to 10pm for the Kingsland Block Party event Sample Group: 60 questionnaires were completed for each of the two above events (30 each x 2 researchers) 120 questionnaires were completed in total for both events (60 each x 2 researchers) Each questionnaire represented either one individual or a group/family Location: Kingsland The surveys were conducted at two locations: 1. The PhoenixFest survey was conducted at Nixon Park, Bond St/Central Rd 2. The Kingsland Block Party survey was conducted in Kingsland Village, New North Rd Event Details 1. The Phoenix Fest15 event started at 12pm and finished at 5.30pm. A no-alcohol community event including music, markets, street theatre, children’s activities and entertainment. With Tahuna Breaks, Midnight Gallery, Hipstamatics, Night Gaunts, DJ Cian and MC Gracie Taylor. 2. The Kingsland Block Party started at 8pm in Kingsland village, including in-house entertainment at 7 venues – Bandita, Citizen Park, The Faltering Fullback, The Kingslander/Nectar Bar, Neighbourhood Brew Bar and the Portland Public House. Completed Questionnaires Completed questionnaires were collated for recording and analysis by the researchers in the survey report. Survey Report The previous year’s Survey Report comprising Excel spreadsheets/charts and comments was provided as a template for updating the information with current year figures and comments. 1 Gender of respondents PhoenixFest15 48% 52% Male Respondets Female Respondents The Kingsland Block Party 42% 58% Male Respondets Female Respondents During the Phoenix Festival at Nixon Park, women were slightly more likely to answer the questions (52% for women versus 48% for men). However, when the party moved to Kingsland Village after 8 pm, men took responsibility to participate in the survey more often than women with 58% and 42% respectively. 2 Question 1. How many people came with you today? Couples were 20% and only a few people came alone (3%). As for the Kingsland Block Party starting at 8 pm in Kingsland Village, people who came with friends were the majority of respondents (2 persons 42%, 3 persons 15%, 4 persons 12%). Couples were approximately the same level as at the Phoenix Festival with 23%. 3 Question 2. How did you travel to Kingsland? This trend was very similar to the 2014 visitor survey. Almost the same percentage of people walked to the Phoenix Festival and to the Kingsland Block Party (29% and 31% respectively). This compared with the 2014 visitor survey when 28% walked to Phoenix Festival and 37% walked to the After Dark Party. Car usage was the most common method of transport to both events – Phoenix Festival 60% and the Kingsland Block Party 35%, compared with 50% and 30% in last year’s survey. For the night event, many preferred to use a taxi as a more secure means of transport (20%), compared with 18% using taxi at last year’s night event. Public transport was the least used means of transport to both events. Compared with last year, a small decrease can be seen in the usage of public transport for Phoenix Festival (from 11% to 6%), while for the Kingsland Block Party this usage remained stable (14%). 4 Question 3. How did you hear about an event happening in Kingsland? Word of mouth was mentioned in 39% cases for Phoenix Festival and 29% for the Kingsland Block Party. This was similar to the previous year’s survey indicating 30% for Phoenix Festival and 35% for the night event. The usage of social media was the second popular in these events. Internet usage, Facebook and the Eventfinder website in particular accounted in total 23% for Phoenix Festival and 29% for the Kingsland Block party. As for radio stations, 18% of respondents mentioned GeorgeFM (the most popular 12%), KiwiFM, BaseFM and bFM for Phoenix Festival, while only two radio stations were mentioned for the Kingsland Block Party event (GeorgeFM 9%, bFM 3%). The least mentioned promotional method was flyer and street poster. Only a few people indicated that they had received information from it. This was a noticeable decrease in comparison with the previous year (29% down to 12% for Phoenix Festival, 30% down to 10% for the Kingsland Block Party). There were also people who did not know about these events at all - 4% of Phoenix Festival respondents said were just passing by Nixon Park and stopped to listen to the music. 20% of respondents at Kingsland village hadn’t heard about the Block Party that night either. 5 Question 4. The 35-44 years group was 31% at the Nixon Park event, compared with 20% in this age group at the night event in the village. At the Phoenix Festival 20% of all respondents were 45-64 years, however only 6% of those who came to the Kingsland Block Party were in this age group. The younger generation had more interest in visiting parties at night. 26% of respondents at the Kingsland Block Party were 18-24 years old, while only 14% of respondents of the same age group attended the Phoenix Festival at Nixon Park. 6 Question 5. Which suburb do you live in? By comparison, 25% of the Block Party respondents were from Kingsland, 14% from West Auckland and 9% from Mt Albert. 7 Question 6. What have you noticed or enjoyed in Kingsland so far? Bars/restaurants were mentioned by 21% of respondents at the Phoenix Festival, with 19% of respondents mentioning Events (music, performances) at this festival. A significant number of respondents (17%) mentioned that Kingsland is a very nice place to visit and to live. For the Kingsland Block Party visitors, the most noticeable things were similar but with different percentages: Bars/Restaurants 38%, Good Neighbourhood 18%, Events 13%, Cafes 11%, and Atmosphere 10%. 8 Question 7a.1. Do you know or use any of the businesses in Kingsland Village? Phoenix Fest15 32% Yes 68% No Slightly more than 2/3 of Phoenix Festival visitors mentioned knowing or using Kingsland businesses. Question 7a.2. Names of the businesses Phoenix Fest15 Schools, 2 Taiko restaurant, 5 Atomic Coffee, 6 Bakery, 5 Other Shops, 6 Citizen Park, 5 Mechanics, 2 Other Businesses, 5 Other Bars/Restaura nts, 35 Neighbourhoo d Brewbar, 5 Bars and restaurants generally were mentioned by 35% of respondents, with the following businesses named - Atomic Coffee, Taiko, Citizen Park and Neighbourhood Brew bar. 9 Question 7a.3 – Phoenix Festival Do you know about the Kingsland Block Party in the village tonight? If yes, are you intending to come? Phoenix Fest15 48% 52% Yes No A flyer on the Kingsland Block party was handed out to people at the Phoenix Festival. According to the survey, a half of Phoenix Fest visitors (52%) were informed about the Kingsland Block Party and 56% of them intended to come along to Kingsland village in the evening. This compares with only 27% of respondents at last year’s festival being aware that there was a party event in Kingsland village following the Nixon Park festival. Question 7b.1. – The Kingsland Block Party Have you been to the Phoenix Fest15 event at Nixon Park today? The Kingsland Block Party 34% Yes 66% No About 1/3 of The Kingsland Block Party visitors had been at the Phoenix Festival at Nixon Park earlier that day. This compares with 55% at last year’s After Dark Party who said they had been to the earlier event at Nixon Park. 10 Question 7b.2. Which venues have you visited or intend to visit tonight? Speaking about the overall event’s satisfaction rate we should mention that there were no respondents with negative opinion. Conversely, 52% and 12% of them were very satisfied and satisfied respectively, and 36% evaluated the event as excellent. Among the most popular venues respondents mentioned Portland Public House 25%, The Kingslander/Nectar Bar 20%, Citizen Park 16%, and Neighbourhood Brew Bar 10%. Question 8. How would you rate your satisfaction as a visitor to Kingsland? Phoenix Fest15 Satisfied 12% Excellent 36% Very satisfied 52% Excellent Very satisfied Satisfied 52% of respondents were Very Satisfied (53% last year) and 36% said the Phoenix Festival event was Excellent, an increase from 25% who said Excellent last year. 12% said they were Satisfied, compared with 17% last year. There were no respondents with negative opinion (last year 5% No Opinion). 11 Question 8. How would you rate your satisfaction as a visitor to Kingsland? The Kingsland Block Party Satisfied, 8 Excellent, 37 Excellent Very satisfied, 55 Very satisfied Satisfied The satisfaction rate of the Kingsland Block Party visitors was similar to that of the Phoenix Festival: Excellent – 37%, Very Satisfied – 55%, Satisfied – 8%. Compared with the 2014 After Dark Party event, there was a considerable increase in satisfaction for the Saturday night event – from 18% Excellent rating last year to 37% and from 45% to 55% Very Satisfied this year. This reflects additional marketing spend on Myles Taylor of Fortylove to promote the event and coordinate gigs at the venues this year.
