The Master in Economics prepares its students to become professional
economists with future careers in international organizations, central banking,
government, consulting, finance, or in academic research. The Master in
Economics is jointly offered by École Polytechnique, ENSAE, ENS Cachan, HEC
Paris and University Paris-Sud.
PREREQUISITE
Strong background in mathematics.
PEDAGOGICAL OBJECTIVES
RESEARCH
The goal of this two-year program is to provide an advanced training
in economics at the highest international level with a strong emphasis
on advanced quantitative methods for both theoretical and empirical
analyses.
Our courses are offered by economists from France and around the
world who are recognized authorities in their fields of specialization.
They are taught according to the highest academic standards for
graduate programs in the US and Europe, with a heavy emphasis
on the development of advanced analytical and quantitative skills.
Consequently, our students have the unique opportunity to reach the
frontier of economic research in the areas of their interest. This feature
allows our graduates to become young professionals with highly valuable
quantitative skills and specialization. Moreover, the successful completion
of the master thesis provides the basis to pursue a Ph D. degree within
our graduate school.
In the first year, students get acquainted with the most important
analytical techniques that are being used in Economics. The training is
mostly devoted to acquiring the most important tools in microeconomics,
macroeconomics and econometrics.
During the second year, students specialize within subfields of
economics (finance, games and decision theory, industrial economics,
macroeconomics, international economics, public economics, labor
economics and econometrics). By the end of that year, they should be
familiar with the research frontier within their main area of specialization.

PERSPECTIVES
Our internship program provides a chance to link academic knowledge to
practical problems, gain experience, and establish links with professionals
at prestigious institutions, companies, and organizations. In this prospective, it is the first step to their successful professional realization. Our
graduates join leading industrial companies, consulting firms, international organizations, government agencies, etc.
Successful students interested in continuing their studies in economics
can obtain a Ph D degree within our graduate schools. Those interested
in further graduate studies internationally find placement at renowned
institutions, such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Yale, LSE, etc.
SOCIO-ECONOMIC
PARTNERSHIPS
The internship program at the end of the first-year gives students the
chance to apply their quantitative skills and knowledge to real-life problems at well-known national and international institutions, companies,
and organizations. Examples of such institutions having hired interns
in the past include BNP-Paribas, EDF, Lafarge, the IMF, the World Bank,
the OECD, DG Trésor, etc. Our department also has long-term research
partnerships with EDF, AXA, Deloitte, Société Générale, UBS/GFI securities,
etc.
