Junction City High School is turning to a pair of JCHS graduates to guide the future fortunes of Lady Jay
volleyball and basketball.
On Wednesday Matt Westerhaus, Athletic Director, introduced
G.G. Booth ( Gaskin ) as the new head coach in volleyball, and
Derek Petty as the new leader of the Lady Jay basketball
program. “G.G. a 98 graduate of Junction City High School,
and Derek Petty a 1983 graduate of Junction City High
School.”
Petty stated, “This is what I’ve been wanting since the moment
I started coaching basketball…to come back to Junction City,
my high school, and give back to my school and my
community.”
Petty played football and basketball at JCHS in the early
1980’s. He has spent the past seven years as the head boys
basketball coach at Sierra Pacific High School in Hanford,
California. He also served as an assistant boys basketball
coach at Junction City High School under former Blue Jay
coach Felix Grimmett.

Booth.
“Coach Grimmett, he gave me my first shot to start coaching. I learned a lot from him. He was very well
organized. I believe we had one of the first I-70 League championship teams in school history.”
Petty will also serve as a Behavior Support Specialist for JCHS.
Booth is also a former player for JCHS, and in recent years has served as an assistant coach in multiple sports.
She is already well acquainted with the volleyball players. She noted the incoming senior class is the first group
of girls she has worked with since their freshman year. “They know my coaching style, they know my
expectations, they’ve been involved with me in multiple different sports. The best part about it is, we’re excited.”
Booth noted six seniors are expected to return to the volleyball program next season. “That’s going to be a big
thing in volleyball.”
Booth has been an assistant volleyball coach at JCHS for five years, and is currently the media specialist at
Junction City High School.
Both coaches formally begin their duties August first.
