NEW ENGLAND BOWLERS’ ASSOCIATION
LATHROP ON TOP OF THE NEBA WORLD - GETS FIRST WIN AT SILVER
TODD LATHROP
from Colchester, CT added his name to the list of NEBA champions with a 258-245 win over
champion Dave Reali at the summer stop in East Harford, CT. Todd has been knocking on the door for years. He has proved
he is one of the best, if not the best, non-champions out there by leading qualifying at the last two non-champs tournaments
including a runner-up finish. At AMF Silver Lanes, the 44 year-old shot games of 244, 212, 224, 209 and 228 on the Sunday
morning squad. His 1117 was near the top of the at-large list so he sat on his number and easily qualified 30th for match play.
In matches, the right-hander defeated champions Tom Durand (West Haven, CT) 219-197 and #3 seed Alex Aguiar (North
Dartmouth, MA) 215-181, Tim Gillick (Milford, CT) 234-221, Billy Trudell (Coventry, RI) who advanced to the top 8 in his
second tournament 216-195 and current rookie leader Matt Brocket (Clinton, CT) 233-197. Todd made shot after shot to keep
up with Dave in a high scoring match. Exchanging mostly strikes with a few spares each, the two finalists stayed within pins of
each other from start to finish. Both bowlers went into the tenth working on doubles with Dave having a one pin lead. Todd
finished first with a clutch strike then a ring ten. Dave needed a double to win but went light for a 3-pin combination. Todd
won $1,550 plus a $100 entry into November’s tournament of Champions plus the honor of wearing a white champion’s shirt.
TODD: 9/ X X X 9/ X X X X X9/ = 258
DAVE: 7/ X 9/ X X X X X X 7/ 8 = 245
DAVE REALI from Cranston, RI put together games of 225, 236, 248, 244 and 190 for 1143 for fourth out of 91 bowlers
on the last qualifying squad and a one round bye. The 34 year-old rolled over Josh Ostertag (Warwick, RI) 245-176, champions
Dan White (Agawam, MA) 222-221 and John Zawalick (Westminster, MA) 225-202 then Tim Healey (Cranston, RI) 215-204
to advance to the championship match. Dave fell short of winning his second title; taking home $900 for his runner-up finish.
The lefty started bowling NEBA at 18 and won his first title in 2008 at Westgate Lanes.
There were 210 entries at AMF Silver Lanes. 48 advanced to match play. The at-large cut was 1090. Squad cuts were 1123 on
Saturday night (squad leader Alex Aguiar with 1180), 1126 at 9 a.m. (squad leader rookie Matthew Brockett with 1192) and
1086 at 12:30 p.m. (squad leader Dan White with 1192). The senior cut was 1086. The score needed for a one round bye was
1143 (16th place). Dan White led the tournament with 237, 246, 226, 246 and 239 for 1192. Steve Fiume & Brian Oppy split
the high game out of the money prize with 278. Ebonite Complete NVs were won by Pete Bostick (1086) and John Zawalick
(raffle). The field average in qualifying was 198.5 and jumped to 215.6 in matches.
Honor scores: 11 in-a-row (299) by Rob LaFountain on 6PM squad
Champion’s Message – I would like to thank Becky and her staff for all their efforts and hard work throughout what I'm sure
are some long days. Without them Neba wouldn't be the tournament that it is. I would also like to thank Dirk at Competitive
Edge Bowling for drilling my equipment and taking the time to lend a hand by answering questions or help on the lanes. I
want to thank everyone for all their congratulations. I enjoy bowling NEBA and it means a lot to me to finally win. But one
regret is I won't be able to bowl doubles with John. It’s better to bowl with him than against him.

A special thanks to AMF Silver Lanes
for giving us a summer rate of $1.50 a game and having us in January.
This resulted in an additional $572 to the prize fund.
Their commitment in advance with this special rate allowed us to promote the
tournament and have our highest entries of the summer – our first time over 200!
And thanks to our other sponsors…
