Update : 29th July, 2013. Dear Member Update # 05 / 2013. - Mike Smith passes on after a long illness. GEMS – responses forwarded to practices. COIDA – signed receipt required for all services rendered Revised ALF tariff list becomes effective from 1st August. One “News Flash” was circulated since our last Update on 21st June, and this was: - 24th June = GEMS request for info re o/s 60 day accounts. Lynette Chapman recovering well: In our last update we reported on an O&P who was hospitalized after a serious motor accident on Sunday, 9th June. Now seven weeks later, Lynette Chapman, an O&P at the Steve Biko Hospital O&P Centre, is on the road to recovery. This week she will be visiting the Dentist and the Orthopaedic Surgeon and several other specialists. She is now able to walk on her own and look after herself. Her major problems are the pains caused by her broken left arm, neck and collar bone, but she is getting stronger everyday and thanks all SAOPA members for their prayers and support. One of Lynette’s biggest problems is that Insurance does not want to pay out for her motor car, as a friend was driving and the insurance claim has stalled on the nominated driver clause. The car only had 22000km on the clock and was valued at R84000, so it is a major concern for her. Lynette hopes to start some exercise later this week and she is motivated and keen to get back to work, which she hopes will happen in about two to three weeks time. Lynette was one of the first two ladies who qualified in O&P in 1978/9, after she started as one of five ladies in the workshops of Neels Uys (from Kimberley) on the 1st December, 1975. Three of the group left soon afterwards and Lynette and Rina Ferreira, both from Ermelo, continued with the course. Lynette qualified in Bloemfontein and Rina in Auckland Park. Show your support for Lynette and give her a call…….082 439 3985…..she would love to hear from her colleagues. Jack Ball Award winner Mike Smith passes on: Mike Smith, aged 80, passed away on Saturday, 6th July, 2013, after a long illness. He started his training as an Orthotist Prosthetist in 1949 at the old Government artificial limb factory in Johannesburg. The head of the department at that time was Tommy O'Gorman. In 1960 he joined Barford Jones in private practice and in 1969 became a partner. During 1975 he was instrumental in forming the AOPPP together with Mervyn Lieberthal. The first meeting took place at the Protea Hotel Hillbrow, Johannesburg. The following year the 1st AOPPP congress was held. This formed the foundation for our ongoing annual congress as we know today. During the following ten years he was instrumental in the running of the AOPPP and organizing the annual congresses. He was nominated for the Jack Ball award in recognition for what he had done for the profession and became the third recipient of the prestigious award in 1989. Mike retired in 1993. He is survived by his daughter Heather, husband Peter and two daughters. He will be sadly missed. Many thanks to Ed Coleman who provided the above information and our condolences go to Mikes family and friends. May his soul rest in peace. Urgent task for every practitioner: Every Practitioner, intern, and student, working at a practice, must sign a revised declaration, and the SAOPA 2013 membership form has had this declaration inserted at the bottom of the form. GEMS – progress on o/s 60 day accounts: GEMS indicated that they will assist with the processing of accounts that are over 60 days and we sent out the news flash on 24th June, whereby we requested members to do the following: 1. Create an Excel template with the header: GEMS claims: 2. Add your practice name and practice number and contact details at the top. 3. Create the following columns: patient name / member number / dependent code (ie 001, 002) / date of service / amount outstanding / status of claim.............leave this blank. 4. List all your o/s claims which are 60 days or older. In response to the News Flash, 42 practices submitted the required templates, which were forwarded to GEMS for their intervention and response. To date 8 practices have had their templates returned, listing what action was needed. It has been noted that most of these practices have had most of their o/s accounts settled, and our grateful thanks are extended to Reginald Sadiki for his assistance. If your practice is battling with GEMS accounts that are over 60 days, complete the requested template and email it to SAOPA soonest. It will then be forwarded.
