Most of the respondents where Make Games members. This is the first of its kind and so no comparison can be done. It is intended that this survey act as baseline for further study. The survey is based off organizations 2013 financial year. Key Findings: There are 32 active game development companies in South Africa Overall the games industry has directly created 240 jobs The game development industry is valued at about R30 million 22.9% of the industry is female (55 in total) Only 5% of the industry is “Black” (13 in total) Only 31% of companies (10 in total) generate their own games for sale to consumers. The remaining companies rely mostly on business-to-business and similar contract work. 28% (9 in total) of the companies have been trading for longer than 3 years. 46% (15 in total) of the companies incorporated in 2013 and 2014. Limitations and other findings Most of the respondents would not give state their profit values for the 2013 year. So our data is limited. We do know that only 37% of respondents (12 in total) made a profit in the 2013 year. We expect the next year’s results to be considerably higher, especially in terms of revenue and profit since we will then be able to take into account Broforce, Desktop Dungeons and Viscera Clean Up Detail which will have all been fully released. These games are already international successes are likely to be South Africa’s most successful titles to date.
