BULLETIN #13 - MARCH 30, 2017
Message from the Principal
Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope you all had a good rest. We know that the last three months will
fly by. There is a lot happening in third term: Family Fun Night, Track and Field, gardening in our garden
beds, year-end field trips and much more. We will do our best to keep you informed about everything that is
going on. Remember to subscribe to our website for reminders and updates.
Family Fun Night is May 12th. Our PAC is busy planning this biannual event and fund raiser for our school.
They would appreciate any donations for the silent auction. Also – look for information to come home about
raffle baskets. Our next PAC meeting will be Monday, April 3rd at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome.
The next Tea and Talk will be Friday, April 7th. Join us at 8:45 – 9:15 am. Meet Mrs. Paxton and guest
teacher, Mrs. Mansahia. Our topic will be healthy lunches. We are going to brainstorm ideas to share with all
of our families.
What’s Happening in…. Div. 2!
We are learning photography in art. We are taking pictures and learning Photoshop, how to use filters and take
quality photos. In social studies we are learning about Canadian history. We get to choose a topic and research
the topic and then we will present what we learned on a posterboard. We will be having an exhibition in the
gym for people to come and see what we learned. In science we are learning about design and technology.
This week, for example, we are designing and building our own pencil cases. We can use any materials as long
as the product is effective. We are learning to make “nets” to build prototypes. We are using creative thinking,
to make something that someone would want to buy. In math, we are learning to make charts to compare data.
We take surveys to extract data and use it properly. We are also reading novels and doing independent novel
studies. We are learning to work with others and combine ideas. Our teacher, Mr. Kanda, encourages us to
treat others respectfully, to listen to others and what they think, and remember that others have feelings, too.
We love our class because Mr. Kanda gives very clear directions, he’s always available to help and he is doing a
good job of getting us ready for high school.

Garden Supplies
Some of our teachers and students are planning out the gardens now for spring and fall
harvesting. We are looking for donations of plants, annuals and perrennials for the garden
beds. Some ideas are: herbs like rosemary, sage, thyme, blueberries, strawberries, onion,
garlic, flowers and any vegetables. If you can help, please let us know. If you have time
to volunteer, we would also be most grateful.
Treat Tuesdays
Our wonderful parent volunteers have two Treat Tuesdays planned: April 4th and 25th. Bring a loonie for a
recess treat.
Handwashing
We know that schools are very germ-filled places and want to minimize the transmission of illness. Our school
nurse has helped us partner with student nurses from BCIT. This week they trained nine of our grade 6 and 7
students to teach younger students to wash hands effectively. We will repeat
these lessons next fall before cold and flu season begins. Parents can help by
reminding children to wash their hands with soap and water frequently through
the day, especially before eating. Hum the ABC’s while washing to make sure
hands are really clean.
Spring Celebration of Music
Mrs. Paxton and Ms. Holden are organizing an evening Celebration of Music on Wed.,
April 26th at 6:30 pm. We will be inviting our accomplished musicians to perform a short
piece that afternoon for the whole school, and in the evening for parents and other guests.
Admission will be by donation to support the Band/Music program at McNeely. Students
were informed about this opportunity at an assembly yesterday. Ms. Holden and Mrs.
Paxton will audition students who wish to perform next week.
