1st Annual NWTF – Iowa Women in the Outdoors Weekend on June 23 – 24, 2017 - Hosted by Shelby County Conservation Board In partnership with Shelby County SH Strutters, Prairie Rose State Park, Harlan, Iowa The Women in the Outdoors Program provides opportunities for women and girls (14+) to learn and enjoy outdoor skills in a friendly environment, meet people with similar interests, and obtain a greater appreciation of the outdoor world. 2017 Class List • Basic Archery • Basic Self Defense • Beginning Shotgun • Easy Dutch Oven Pre-registration is required, limited to 50. Classes are filled in order of receipt of paid registration. Basic Archery - Call it empowering, call it therapy, call it good for the soul....call it downright fun! Whatever it is to you, come experience why more and more women are taking up archery and archery hunting. This class is a safe place for the lady that is just starting to be interested in archery or for the ones that are seasoned. We will set you up in a bow to use for the class and teach shooting basics, discuss judging distance and shot placement. Whether you take your skills to the field to harvest your own organic food for your table or shoot for recreation, this class will help you succeed. Basic Self-Defense - This course is not designed to make you a martial arts expert or a Ninja. This course will help you learn some very basic techniques that can stop/distract an attacker, and allow you to disengage and get away. Some of the techniques and controlled practice sessions will require students to be on the ground, so wear suitable/comfortable clothing. Beginning Shotgun - Learn proper techniques in gun handling safety and get tips on how to shoot shotguns. Live firing will be available at the range. Participants will shoot clay targets. Firearms and safety equipment will be provided. Easy Dutch Oven Cooking - Working in small groups, students will learn basic instructions cleaning and caring for Dutch ovens as well as trying their hands at preparing easy recipes during class. Firearms Training and Handgun Selection - This is not a shooting class. Participants in this class will have a chance to look at and handle a variety of handguns available on the market today. Class discussion will be on how to determine - the type of handgun you want/ need, how to find the handgun that fits you, concealed carry considerations, and basic handgun maintenance. Henna Tattooing – Henna tatooing originates in India. It’s a plant based ink that will stain your skin temporarily up to two weeks. Experienced henna tattooers will apply simple designs. Each participant can experience Henna tattooing Friday evening during the wine tasting. Introduction to Kayaking - Do you enjoy kayaking and want to perfect your skills or would you like to learnthe basics in this popular sport? This class is for you! Information will include water safety, how to enter and exit the kayak, paddle strokes and other maneuvers.This class requires people to be able to get in and out of a kayak on river sandbars, be able to drag a kayak in a river situation (water shoes recommended), have skills to maneuver through small rapids and avoid logjams. Under 18 may participate with parent or guardian listed on registration form in the same class. Be prepared to get wet. Orienteering & GPS – Ever find yourself lost and need to be able to find your way out? Gone mushroom hunting and feel like you are backwards and don’t know how to get back to your vehicle? This class will be led by one of the county naturalists on how to use a compass and GPS. You will experience hiking and defining your coordinates at the same time so that you will never be lost again. Trailer Backing-. Do you have trouble backing a trailer? Have you never even tried? Participants in this class would get instruction from a non-biased person on how to back a trailer. There will be trucks and trailers provided to practice learning the art of backing up a trailer so that you can take this knowledge and hit the road! Y o g a - Using Yoga postures to create strength, flexibility, and stress reduction. All levels encouraged. If you have a yoga mat available, please bring it. Will have some available for use. Wine Tasting – Iowa Wines and More will be providing wine tasting Friday evening. They feature wines from all over Iowa. Wind chimes – Participants will be using either leftover pieces of stained glass or shells to construck windchimes. Wild edibles – Participants will learn how to identify wild edibles found locally and how they can be prepared and eaten. Please Note:Organizing the workshop takes place several months in advance.
