Concept of Eco-Efficiency
Eco-efficiency is a management strategy
that links financial and environmental
performance to create more value with
less ecological impact.
Practical method used by the business
organisations
Objectives to achieve concrete
measurable environmental results
Eco-efficiency gains can be achieved
through
 Optimizing processes - moving from costly end-of-pipe solutions to
approaches that prevent pollution in the first place.
 Recycling Waste - using the by-products and wastes of one industry
as raw materials and resources for another, thus creating zero
waste.
 Eco-innovation - manufacturing "smarter" by using new knowledge
to make old products more resource-efficient to produce and use.
 With New services - for instance, leasing products rather than selling
them, which changes companies' perceptions, spurring a shift to
product durability and recycling.
 With Networks and virtual organizations - shared resources increase
the effective use of physical assets
Long-term and sustainable results.
Not just for the one time in Helsinki, The Eco-Efficient Event Manual
is under process

 We Finns, as the host of the IAAF World Championships in
Athletics - Helsinki 2005, are aware of the local and global
environmental impact of the World Championships. For the
first time in the IAAF history we present an environmental
programme called ECOmass. A good sporting event is built
on the foundation of a welcoming environment, helpfulness,
smoothly running traffic, fair play, tidiness and clean nature.
Respecting the Finnish tradition, we have committed
ourselves together in co-operation with our public and
private partners to work for the environment. The legacy of
sustainability will be handed over in the form of an EcoEfficient Mass Event Manual for the International
Association of Athletics Federation for future use.

reducing them. It helps to evaluate emissions from heat and electricity consumption, travelling,
transportation and paper consumption.
Temporary roof at the Stadium and other tailored constructions will be reused and recycled after
the Championships. Recycling Center of Helsinki Metropolitan area and its units will receive and
reuse some of the materials and decorations.
Fitted carpet (about 10 000 m2) is mainly reused after the Championships (5-7 times). The carpet
in Main Media Centre (about 2 500 m2) is disposable and will be recycled.
Athletes´Village is mainly using existing infrastructure. The village and its signposts and
decorations will be reused right after Helsinki 2005 for IPC Athletics Open European
Championships Espoo 2005.
Stadium-foundation, Main Media Centre “Kisahalli” and TKK Dipoli has taken an environmental
management system in use as a part of getting ready to host the Championships

Walk the green Helsinki –map will be distributed at Helsinki 2005 info desks. The map includes
seven walking routes, finest nature sights and pick up points for city bikes.
Daily ECOtips will be distributed to teams (Village newsletter), media (daily bulletin), volunteers
(“Viestikapula” newsletter in Finnish), and to the public (daily programme and Stadium TV)
How to communicate of Eco-Efficiency?
 Day 5 - ECOtip of the day - Recycling bottles
Did you know that Finland is number one in the
world in reusing soft drink bottles? Bottles are
being used about 30 times and they are worth
15-40 cents. Helsinki 2005 water bottles are
disposables and they are collected separately
for recycling. Please return your bottles to Dipoli
restaurant or to a container near your apartment
block.
How to communicate of Sustainable
Consumption Patterns?
Is there something new to managing
environmental issues of major events?
The core actors related to environmental impact of the major event
are the local, regional and government environmental authorities,
local organizing committee and experts in environmental
management in non-governmental organizations and science.
 Eco-Efficient Event Manual is intended to give practical and
analytical guidance to local organising committee and to the host
cities

Why measuring the environment load
counts?
Information and awarness is not enough
Shows what you have done to the
environment with your choices, and how
you could do better
Actual decrease in the use of the natural
raw resources is needed as well the
decrese in emissions. E.g. In EU CO2
emission trading scheme, transportation is
outside of the system

Being part of developing sustainable
communities
 One the most important areas to achieve
towards more sustainable consumption and
production patterns is the cooperation of local
government with it’s public and private partners
in developing it’s community structure. Hosting a
major event is an opportunity for local
government to in the controlled way develop
grounds towards more sustainable urban
structure e.g. water and waste-water
management.
