Third Grade * Daily Homework * Week 2

Dear Parents,
We are excited to share with you that 2nd grade is now starting to teach math using the algorithm!
This is how we as adults were taught as kids. Therefore, this should be exciting news to you! For
the next couple weeks we are only going to focus on solving addition problem s. We want to make
sure that our students get the concept really well before moving them on to subtraction. Please help
support your child by helping them each night to make sure we are catching all their mistakes.
Therefore, you may notice some changes in their homework for this reason. Thank you for your
continued support. Here is some example of what we will be working on…..
Regrouping Numbers:
Example #1
0 Hundreds
1 Tens
11 Ones
Regrouping = ( the student must regroup the ones place because there are too many ones. The student will take
ten ones and move them to the tens place. Now the student has 0 hundreds, 2Tens, and 1 One.
0 Hundreds
2 Tens
1 One. The number is 235.
Example #2
11
268
+483
751
1. Add the ones. (8 ones + 3 ones= 11 ones)
Regroup. (11 ones= 1 ten and 1 one)
2. Add the tens. (1 ten + 6 tens + 8 tens= 15 tens)
Regroup. (15 tens= 1 hundred and 5 tens)
3. Add the hundreds. (1 hundred + 2 hundreds +
4 hundreds= 7 hundreds)
Jan. 27th - Jan 31st
