Madison Area Lacrosse Association Board Meeting Minutes October 6, 2010 Girls Breakout Session: Meeting called to order at 6:40pm by Barb Hoeft (MALA VP/Waunakee) Chair. Present: Mark Blume (MALA Secretary/Waunakee), Brad Jackson (MALA President/Stoughton), Matt Druzba (MALA VP/Middleton), Heather Finnegan (Deforest), Jody Spencer (Verona), Dave Wollin (WLF). Deforest – Heather Finnegan stated Deforest is trying to get a high school girls program started in time for the 2011 season. As a follow up, Jody Spencer indicated she may offer a girls program in Sun Prairie/Deforest this Winter. She is working with Amy Jones of Sun Prairie on this. Barb Hoeft distributed a proposed high school game schedule for 2011. The schedule will be voted on at the next meeting. Barb Hoeft distributed the 2011 rules changes. Refer to the US Lacrosse website for more information. Open Discussion: Jody Spencer stated coach certification enforcement should be consistent. Either enforce it all the time or not at all. Dave Wollin stated this occurs because there is no good enforcement method. Dave indicated this will be referred to the WLF rules and regulations committee for consideration. Jody Spencer indicated consideration should be given paying game officials based on their rating (higher rating, hiring pay). Matt Druzba mentioned the youth program is still coming together. Looks like a grades 3-5 and 6-8 split. The Milwaukee area is also trying to get a youth program going. Matt will meet with Ken Stark on this. Matt mention a former Duke player now in the area is willing to help out occasionally. Middleton is looking for an assistant coach. Meeting adjourned at 7:00pm Page 1 of 7 Madison Area Lacrosse Association Board Meeting Minutes October 6, 2010 MALA Board Meeting: Meeting Called to order by President Jackson at 7:12PM who announced Spotted Cows for everyone if the group was able to come to a decision on the high school boys divisional proposal. Board Members Present: Brad Jackson (Pres/Stoughton) Mark Meyer (VP-HS Boys/Verona) Mark Blume (Secretary/Waunakee) John Haney (Past President) Matt Druzba (VP Youth Girls/Middleton) Barb Hoeft (VP HS Girls/Waunakee) Matt Druzba (VP Youth Girls/Middleton) Board Members Absent: Margery Tibbetts (Treasurer) Glenn Teschendorf (Officials Coordinator) Chris O’Hearn (VP Youth Boys/Sun Prairie) Also present: Bill Sotis (Regents), Trey Bomier (Waunakee), Randy Dorn (Waunakee Boys), RJ Binau (Waunakee), Megan Wiserly (Stoughton), Rayanne Pedretti (Verona), Dave Wollin (Referees/WLF), Lisa Whinnery (Middleton), Heather Finnegan (Deforest), Bennett West ( Sauk), Steve Hunter (Memorial), Mike Sampson (Stoughton). 1 Approval of September 1, 2010 meeting minutes: Mark Blume had previously emailed the minutes to all board members and they were also posted on the MALA website. Brad Jackson asked for comments. Hearing none, Motion by Barb Hoeft, second by Mark Meyer to approve the minutes. Motion passed unanimously. 2 Treasurer’s Report: President Jackson announced Margery Tibbetts’ resignation as Treasurer. Mark Blume made a motion, seconded by Matt Druzba, to appoint John Haney as interim treasurer until the Spring election. Brad Jackson asked for comments. Hearing none, Motion passed unanimously. 3 Girls Report Barb Hoeft mentioned a possible new team in Janesville. Youth organization is still being worked on. Proposed schedule was distributed and will be voted on next month. 4 Officials Page 2 of 7 Madison Area Lacrosse Association Board Meeting Minutes October 6, 2010 4.1 Dave Wollin reported some new officials are coming on board this season. There should be no problems with official numbers this season. 4.2 Some possible nationally sponsored programs to improve mens/boys officials. 4.3 The Lacrosse, WI area should be ok for officials but some Madison area officials may need to travel there for games. 5 Boys High School Conferences & Schedule 5.1 Mark Meyer began the discussion by presenting the MALA Boys Conference Realignment Proposal for 2011 (copy attached). 5.2 Group decided to continue “Red” and “White” conferences. Conferences were determined primarily on a competitive basis. The intent is the conference alignment would be reviewed annually. Teams are free to petition to move conferences. 5.3 WLF did pass the divisional structure for the state tournament, so there is no need for a “City”/”MALA” champion. Each conference will have its own champion. 5.4 MALA schedules conference games. Coaches in opposite conferences can and are encouraged to schedule games against each other. 5.4.1 Dave Wollin noted any changes MUST get posted to the MALA website. 5.5 Conference assignments will be review each year with the criteria established in the proposal. 5.6 The WLF State Tournament Committee (which needs volunteers, hint, hint) will determine tournament seeding. 5.7 Mark then discussed the proposed 2011 schedule. Coaches can agree to move games. Also included is a ‘potential’ Saturday schedule for games against the Lacrosse Lighting team. These are simply suggestions to cut down on travel. 5.7.1 John Haney discussed the JV game schedule will get complicated depending on how many teams there are. Perhaps a separate JV schedule will need to be done. John is confident he can come up with a workable schedule. At this time is looks like all Red Conference teams have JV teams, Waunakee will have two and Middleton may also have two. In the White Division, Deforest is not sure but is optimistic, Memorial probably not but maybe, Sauk not sure, Stoughton yes. Page 3 of 7 Madison Area Lacrosse Association Board Meeting Minutes October 6, 2010 5.7.2 “The sooner the JV schedule is finalized the better” requested Waunakee who has to get busing arrangement set up and budgeted. 5.8 Mark Meyer stated co-op team rules are being addressed at the WLF level. Dave Wollin mentioned some of the ideas being proposed. 5.9 A motion was made by Mark Meyer, seconded by Matt Druzba to approve the proposal as written. 5.9.1 Discussion: 5.9.1.1 Can MALA step in and move a team from one conference to the other? – YES. Dave Wollin suggested establishing a “competition committee” to review conference designations of each team annually. 5.9.1.2 Suggestions by Mike Sampson that referee travel costs (for example to Lacrosse) be paid by MALA and not the individual teams. The group felt this was an excellent idea. 5.9.1.3 RJ Binau suggested MALA look at financial incentives to support all MALA teams to promote playing the Lacrosse Lighting. For example, cover the $300$350 cost of a school bus from Madison to Lacrosse and back. Someone suggested MALA ask WLF for funds to do this. 5.10 The question was called. Motion passed unanimously. (at this point President Jackson did in fact serve the Spotted Cows!) 6 Contact Information Dave Wollin mentioned current team rep and coach information needs to be updated for each team. Some teams do not get reps assigned for a few more months. Brad Jackson will think about how to update this info and make a suggestion next month. 7 Youth Update 7.1 Discussion that youth teams played too many games last year. Some teams played 18-20 games. That is too many. Too many Sunday games (Mothers Day games). This was somewhat cause by last minute team additions that required extra games to be scheduled. Some clubs do not mind their teams playing each other (Waunakee White v. Waunakee Purple for example) but other clubs are against this. Brad Jackson will follow up with Chris O’Hearn on this. 7.2 Dave Wollin suggested a March 15 deadline for clubs to finalize how many youth teams they will have so that a schedule can be done. So Members are asked to get Page 4 of 7 Madison Area Lacrosse Association Board Meeting Minutes October 6, 2010 organized EARLY and determine how many youth teams they will have at each level. 8 True Lacrosse Event – No one had any news on this 9 New Business – 9.1 Barb Hoeft suggested MALA look into requiring medical personnel be in attendance at games. A nurse, EMT, trainer, something, even if it is a parent. It might be easiest for the home team to contact the local EMT and ask them to attend the game. 9.1.1 Barb would like more discussion on this, especially with so much focus on being put on concussions. US Lacrosse may be looking into this also. There was a side discussion about mouth guards at this point. 9.1.2 Perhaps screeners can come on and do brain scans before the season starts so there is a comparison in case of a head injury? 9.2 Per John Haney, Kristen of Lacrosse Lightning would like White Division teams to contact her to get game schedules, fields, times, ect set up since she has to work with multiple high schools in the Lacrosse area. 10 Announcements – No other announcements 11 Next Meeting – October 3, 2010. There being no addition business, motion by Hoeft, second by Blume to adjourn. Motion passed unanimously. Meeting Adjourned at 8:35pm. Respectfully submitted: Mark Blume, Secretary Page 5 of 7 Madison Area Lacrosse Association Board Meeting Minutes October 6, 2010 MALA Boys Conference Realignment Proposal 2011 MALA RED Janesville Middleton Regents Sun Prairie Wauankee Verona • MALA WHITE DeForest La Crosse La Follette Memorial Sauk Prairie Stoughton The proposed conference structure would be revisited every year and teams are able to petition MALA for movement (red or white) • Long term MALA could consider migrating to two conferences one made up of primarly D1 programs and the other D2. The two conferences proposed above are the first step in that direction. • Each conference would play for their own conference champion (by record or by a game, TBD) • Each team would play ten conference games. Five home and five away within their conference. • Teams are free (and encouraged) to play teams from the other MALA conference as non-conference games. Scheduled between coaches. • As in past years, teams are free to move the MALA scheduled games to different dates or locations as they see fit. MALA will also schedule all games for Tuesday and Friday nights, however, teams may move the games to Monday or Thursday nights if agreed u • One important caveat to the schedule listed below, La Crosse lacrosse games are scheduled during the week for scheduling consistency. MALA knows that these will be nearly impossible to make, therefore we have offered suggestions for Saturday games. Team • When restructuring the above realigned conferences, the following criteria were considered. • Total enrollment • Ability to field a JV team • Youth infrastructure • Division Classification • Competitve balance Page 6 of 7 Madison Area Lacrosse Association Board Meeting Minutes October 6, 2010 MALA 2011 Boy's High School Schedule (Proposed) Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday March 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 March 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 March 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 March 27 29 30 31 1 2 Spring Break Week - Stoughton, Sauk Prairie, DeForest 4 5 6 7 8 Earliest Practice April 3 April 17 April 24 Easter Sunday May May May May 22 Bullrush 29 Memorial Day June 5 La Crosse at Stoughton 12 18 Spring Break Week - Madison, La Crosse 25 MALA Scheduling Game 2 Sun Prairie Middleton Verona Memorial La Crosse Sauk Prairie 1 2 MALA Scheduling Game 4 Janesville Waunakee Regents DeForest Stoughton La Follette 8 9 MALA Scheduling Game 6 Waunakee Sun Prairie Middleton Stoughton Memorial La Crosse 15 16 MALA Scheduling Game 8 Waunakee Regents Janesville Stoughton La Follette DeForest 23 MALA Scheduling Game 9 Sun Prairie Middleton Verona Memorial La Crosse Sauk Prairie 30 Earliest Day for 1st game 13 19 20 26 27 14 MALA Scheduling Game 1 Janesville Regents Verona DeForest La Follette Sauk Prairie 21 28 MALA Scheduling Game 3 Waunakee Sun Prairie Middleton Stoughton Memorial La Crosse 5 MALA Scheduling Game 5 Middleton Verona Regents La Crosse Sauk Prairie La Follette 12 MALA Scheduling Game 7 Regents Verona Janesville La Follette Sauk Prairie DeForest 19 Waunakee Regents Janesville Stoughton La Follette DeForest 3 4 Sun Prairie Middleton Verona Memorial La Crosse Sauk Prairie 10 11 Janesville Regents Verona DeForest La Follette Sauk Prairie 17 18 Sun Prairie Middleton Verona Memorial La Crosse Sauk Prairie 24 25 15 Janesville Waunakee Regents DeForest Stoughton La Follette Sun Prairie Waunakee Janesville Memorial Stoughton DeForest 31 1 7 8 29 23 30 Regents La Crosse at Memorial Verona La Crosse at Sauk Janesville (one site?
