ll a b t e k s a B s e i p g a M s West Important dates to remember Newsletter No.4 December 2011 Sunday 11th December Competition ends for the Christmas break Friday 10th February Competition resumes Wests Magpies Basketball Club wishes all of our players and families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year Christmas is not a time or a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and good will, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. (Calvin Coolidge) Page 2 Wests Magpies Basketball Senior Vice-President’s Message The winter Premier League season was again fruitful for the club, congratulations going to the Division 1 men, the Division 1 women and the Division 2 women, who all took out their respective championships. In the Division 1 men, despite missing seven games of the 18-game season, Jon Harris was also named equal best and fairest for the league. Summer season 2011–12 is now well and truly underway and I’d like to congratulate Sam Adams and Chris Hartmann on moving up to Division 1 men from Division 2 and Casey Baines, Isaac Plunkett and Nick Haisman on moving up to Division 2 men from A grade. I’d also like to welcome two new recruits to the club; Canberra Gunner Jon Holden in the Division 1 men and young star Kathryn Rendell in the Division 1 women’s team. Overall Wests has a strong contingent with four Premier League teams, two A grade men's teams, A grade women and Tuesday night women all playing on. While our Monday night women have not continued on this season, it gives me great pleasure to welcome Ben Jongsma’s Wednesday C grade men's team and Karissa Cooke’s mixed C grade team to the club ranks, giving us 10 senior teams for the season. Our A grade men's teams who play on a Thursday night are on the lookout for any young talent following the graduation of three of last season’s players on to the Premier Division 2 men’s team, as above. The A grade men’s teams help to bridge the gap between under 19s and the Senior Premier League and are a mix of some older experienced players and young up and coming players. Any interested junior players should contact me if they are keen to play. I wish all of our teams and players well for the remainder of this season and all the very best for Christmas and the New Year. Eric Malcolm Vice President—Seniors Junior Vice-President’s Message We have had a great start to the Summer competitions with all teams competing to the best of their abilities! Again, the tireless work of coaches and managers cannot go unrecognized and a big THANK YOU for turning up every week to run your teams. We currently have 31 junior teams across all grades. The U12 and U14 age groups are our largest and will form the foundations of the Club as we continue to grow and service Canberra’s northern community. With such a large number of teams, it becomes difficult to ensure that skill development and game understanding are continually achieved and that a players potential is realized. With a crowded basketball season, the challenge will be to find the time to up-skill coaches and parents. Please look out for next years newsletter which will outline some skills sessions to be delivered to specific age groups in February and March. I am keen to run basketball clinics in schools so if anyone knows of upcoming gala days at their neighbourhood primary school, please contact me! Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year! Chris Higgisson Vice President– Juniors. Newsletter No.4 Page 3 USA Trip in 2012 Wests Magpies will again be taking a group of young players over to the USA in December 2012. The trip will include Texas and Los Angeles. A number of players have already registered their interest in being part of this amazing opportunity. Anyone who would like more information can ring Karyn on 0414 275 064 or Rebecca on 0408 547 717. Uniforms The Club is currently rolling out a new uniform across all grades. This is an enormous task and requires a huge investment. To outfit every team would require an investment of around $15,000 and would take at least three years. The cost of a set of tops alone is $500. If any family knows a business keen to promote themselves in the community by sponsoring an age group, team or the entire club, please ask them to contact Chris Higgisson on 0425 870 507. Junior Presentation Night The Junior Club Presentation Night was held on the 27th September. Many of our junior players and their families attended to recognise the efforts and achievements of last season. A new award was introduced to recognize the service of Jerry Lee (former Cannons player and Coach) with the Club over the past 3 decades. Major award winners were: The Jerry Lee Athlete on the Rise Award– Kurt Duncan The Ian Cupitt Memorial Award– Laura Hunter and Luke Crisp Newsletter No.4 Page 4 We would like to thank our sponsors: With years of experience Totally Workwear understand what you want.
