Statistics Probability Review

Statistics: Analyzing Data
and Probability
Day 5
Vocabulary Statistics
Random Sample- a sample in which every element in the population has an equal chance
of being selected.
Population- the entire group considered for a survey
Biased sample- does not represent the whole population
Mean- the sum of the values divided by the number of values
MAD(mean absolute deviation)- the average distance of each data point from the mean
*Also know median, mode, and range
Statistics Examples
• Calculate the Mean and Range
• Analyze dot plots and box-and-whisker plots

Probability Vocabulary
Probability: the likelihood of an event happening
Outcome: one of the possible results of an experiment
Certain: 1.0, 100%, probability of an event definitely happening
Impossible: 0, probability of an event definitely NOT happening
* Also remember likely, equally likely, and unlikely
Experimental probability: the probability of an event based on the RESULTS
Theoretical probability: what is expected to happen in an experiment
Sample Space: the set of all possible outcomes for an experiment
Compound probability: an event that consists of two or more sample events
* Also remember dependent and independent events
Tree diagram: a visual model that shows all possible outcomes
Probability Examples
Random sample vs biased sample
Certain, impossible, likely, unlikely, equally as likely
Experimental probability vs theoretical probability
Using probability to make predictions
Tree diagrams
