Instructions: Watch my video on this topic and then take a look at these non-financial ways you can help make the world better. What will you do? Write it in the blanks provided. #1 Do You Have A Special Talent? Give what comes naturally. How could you offer those talents to help those in need? Do you write? If you’re a writer, offer to write copy for a non-profit. Or write stories that can be auctioned off, or publish them on Amazon and donate the proceeds. Knit? How about knitting scarves and hats and gloves for the homeless? Or to donate to children in need in poor areas where winter is harsh? You could crochet blankets for preemies, or for the elderly. Bake? Where could you donate your baked goods to help others? Grow a vegetable garden? Talk to a local church or foodbank about how you can donate your excess zucchini every summer to someone who really needs it. ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ #2 Smile Who can you smile at? Smiling, even when you don’t really feel like it, can lift your mood, just by moving those facial muscles. When you smile, you’ll lift the spirits of someone having a hard time. It will be infectious and people you smiled at will smile at others. It could be world changing if we all did it together! ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ #3 Walk Your Talk Whatever your religion, everyone has a faith in something and a set of ideals they believe in. Think of those things you believe are important and do your best every day. How can you walk your talk each day? Hold tight to your ideals and really build them into how you live your life. Tithe to your church Recycle, even when it is inconvenient. Walk instead of drive. Save water. Volunteer. Pick up trash on the street. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ #4 The World Is Our Church God is everywhere. Know that everything and everyone are connected. Aspire to live your whole life as though you are always in church, because we really are. How can you nurture a feeling of connectedness? Fellowship. Reverence for your environment. Nurture a spirit of peace. Treat every day like the miracle it is. Find the beauty in a sunny day. See the power in a major storm. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ #5 Find A Cause Some people are led to a very specific idea. What’s your cause? Start a non-profit and dedicate their lives to an idea. If you aren’t called to start a cause of your own, then hop on board with someone else and help forward their vision of a better world. It takes a group to start a movement. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ #6 Teach The Children Children are such beautiful idealists. Every problem is fixable. Every cause is worthy. Every soul is good if you just look for the goodness. Let’s help them make the world look more like what they see, and less like what we see as tired, jaded grownups. How can you make an impact on the children in your life? Teach them ways to realize their dreams. Show them that they are important and their contributions matter. They are our future, let’s keep them hopeful. ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ #7 Meditate And Pray Either or both, they have a similar effect on your brain, and also on the people around us. When we’re around people who are angry, or frustrated or anxious, their mood can spill over everyone around them. When we are at peace, peace will radiate out from us, and that helps everyone we meet. How can you learn and practice being an island of calm in a hectic world? Regular meditation Daily prayer ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ #8 Do Nice Things As you go through your day, try to spot little things that you can easily do to make life a little easier for someone else. You could change their whole day. What little things can you do? Let the parent with the overtired child go ahead of you at the grocery store. Throw an extra quarter in a nearly expired parking meter. Offer a compliment to a stranger. Hold a door. ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ #9 Volunteer Non-profits always need help. There are so many ways a few of your free hours could really make a difference to someone. Where could you volunteer? Help out at a food bank. Spend a few hours at a retirement home hanging out with the elderly. Do you like animals? Most shelters need people to walk the dogs, or play with the animals. Talk to your local hospital about reading to young children. Or how about the library? ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ #10 Share These Ideas If you like the ideas you get here about everyday philanthropy, then please share them. Let’s start a movement. If everyone did it, imagine what a difference it would make. Who can you share this with? Tell your friends. Share on social media ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ #11 Build Community For all our advantages in the US, I think we’ve lost something important that I’ve seen when I travel in other countries, especially third world countries. A sense of community. A sense of not only belonging, but of building together, of being part of something bigger. Be a part of your community, whatever that means to you. Where can you build community? Be active in your PTA, or neighborhood watch. Saving soup labels for your local school. Get to know your neighbors. Or the people at your church. Or the people you see at your local rec center. Find people who you share something with and build that connection. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ #12 Look Around You Do you see something that needs to be done? Can you do it? Can you support someone who is working on it? This is the true basis of philanthropy. It is a mindset backed by actions. Every little bit makes a difference, even if we don’t see it. Because everything on this list comes down to love. How do you show your love? Love for yourself, to be the best person you can be. Love for others, to do your part to alleviate suffering and need. Love for our planet, by only keeping what you need and letting go of the greed that is currently driving western society. ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ Love can change the world, one smile at a time. Be sure to let me know what you plan to do.
